*'''Oppose''' Football -- association football, you probably call it "soccer" -- is the world's most popular sport, you know. Chad Johnson doesn't play football. *First choice is move to [[Chad Johnson]] and move the current page to the DAB. Second choice is to leave it here. That he caught a few balls once or twice in a few Canadian Football games is a footnote on his career. He is primarily known as an American Football player. Question

[edit]

It says "Chad Javon Ochocinco is an American football wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League." I think it should be edited to say "Chad Javon Ochocinco is an American football wide receiver and occasional kicker for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League." He did kick in a 2009 preseason game, and I'm sure he will sometime again if the kicker for Cincinnati gets hurt. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.177.190.9 (talk) 06:33, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jim McMahon occasionally caught a pass for the Bears, but he's only listed as a quarterback. Larry Biittner once pitched an inning for the Cubs, but he's only listed as outfield/first base. And those were in regular season games. If 85 kicked in a preseason game, that doesn't really count. Is he listed as an alternate kicker on the official team roster? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:40, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name Change back to Johnson?

[edit]

In a Yahoo! Sports article, Chad Ochocinco promised to change his surname back to Johnson if he was shut out by Darrelle Revis. The website is here [1], but I will post the paragraph that has this quoted.

"And then, of course, there was Chad Ochocinco, who promised to change his surname back to “Johnson” if Revis shut him down. Two matchups later, the man soon to be formerly known as Ochocinco had collected a pitiful 28 yards in one game, and had his 120-game catch streak broken in the other."

The Bengals just lost to the Jets last week, so he may change his name to Hachi Go, or he may just ignore what he said. User:Six-thirty-three —Preceding undated comment added 15:59, 17 January 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Edit request from Gzanini, 6 December 2010

[edit]

{{edit semi-protected}} Please add the following to this page. "On November 18, 2010, Ochocinco released Mad Chad, a video game for iPhones through Rock Software. The mobile game became the #4 downloaded game on iTunes in under 24 hours and a viral hit due to buzz on Twitter." Credible sources: www.rocksoftware.com http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mad-chad/id399834144?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 Gzanini (talk) 23:51, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: Actually, neither of those are credible sources for things like sales figures, since they're both self-posted by the company itself. Second, the claim of "under 24 hours" does not appear on the page. Third, there is no way that they can know why it hit that amount--the guess that it's generated by "buzz on Twitter" is just that--a guess. Nonetheless, we can use the source to verify that the game exists, just not the sales figures. So I've added a comment saying that the game was released on that date. If you can find independent reliable sources to verify the sales figures, please make a new edit request. Qwyrxian (talk) 06:05, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Changing name back to "Johnson"

[edit]

Chad announced today, 1/25/11, via phone conversation on SportsCenter, that he is legally chnaging his name back to Chad Johnson as soon as he can get the paperwork done. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.110.213.148 (talk) 21:22, 25 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I added it under the name change section, with a cited source. -- CollisionCourse (talk) 02:03, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Soccer Trials

[edit]

I know this is a minor issue, but I have noticed an issue with many editors changing the word "soccer" in the section chronicling Chad Ochocinco's recent tryout to "football". This is confusing to readers and not in compliance with WP:ENGVAR, which states that articles with strong national ties use that nation's version of English and colloquialisms. I would like to politely ask editors who have considered this change to please consult the guidelines and keep consistency throughout the article by not changing the wording. JakeH07 (talk) 04:38, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New England Patriots

[edit]

Okay I want to make this clear. Chad Ochocinco is NOT a member of the New England Patriots YET. the fact that his infobox (as of this writing) already reads "New England Patriots - No. 85" is a MAJOR jumping of the gun. I am reverting it until official announcements have been made. any objections, please disucss below. Thanks.--Boston Burkenation (talk) 21:36, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well we don't know what his number will be either as 85 is already taken. --151.203.222.250 (talk) 01:38, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wonderlic

[edit]

Is it known what his wonderlic score was?--Conor Fallon (talk) 04:25, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wonderlic scores are rarely released to the public, and a quick Google search of the web and newspapers brings up nothing. Eagles 24/7 (C) 04:33, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Conference Championships as a career highlight

[edit]

I believe they are only relevant if someone wins several (The examples given by 24.147.30.7 fall under this category) or wins one, but doesn't win a Super Bowl. I also feel since he didn't even play in the championship game it's even technically a personal accomplishment.--Rockchalk717 (talk) 19:22, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As an active member of the AFC winning team I feel it qualifies as an obvious career highlight- Superbowl win or no. Another example could simply be Damon Huard - He has and I believe rightfully* Super Bowl Champion x2 under his career achievements.. 24.147.30.7 (talk) 21:23, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Another example of multiple championships. I don't see how a single conference championship, a game he was on the inactive list for even, is a notable highlight compared to his other accomplishments.--Rockchalk717 (talk) 19:20, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, an example of a player who did not play in said games and yet has the achievements on his career highlights hes a backup quarterback he aided his team in pratices. So how is the case any different? And I fail to see how being on a Conference Championship winning team is not a career highlight 24.147.30.7 (talk) 19:48, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The word "Ochocinco" found 111 times in this short article.

[edit]

"Ochocinco" found 111 times in this short article (I'm not sure why, but "cinco" is found 125 times, unless I made a mistake). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.184.248.6 (talk) 08:55, 28 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Did he really "play" for Miami?

[edit]

The opening of this article states he played for the Bengals, Patriots, and Dolphins. He technically never really played for the Dolphins, just tried out for the team and was cut in week two of training camp. I would suggest this be changed. Kevinmac81 (talk) 14:49, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He did suit up and play one pre-season game for the Miami Dolphins on August 10, 2012 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Presumable, he did get paid to play.Television fan (talk) 00:45, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Move time (17 April 2014)

[edit]
The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Not moved. As User:Xoloz points out, disambiguating terms mustn't themselves be ambiguous. We don't know what kind of 'football' would be indicated, American or association football. There was not enough support for 'gridiron football'. Someone might consider a new move proposal with one of the other alternatives such as 'wide receiver.' EdJohnston (talk) 03:59, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Chad Johnson (American football)Chad Johnson (football) – Well, he is under contract with a Canadian team, so its not quite American football anymore; better to be more precise than add unneeded disambiguation. ViperSnake151  Talk  23:34, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Football -- association football, you probably call it "soccer" -- is the world's most popular sport, you know. Chad Johnson doesn't play football. To disambiguate Johnson in this way would be inherently ambiguous. One might suggest Chad Johnson (gridiron football), but I think the current title is fine. Johnson hasn't even played in Canada yet. Xoloz (talk) 01:12, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose but only for now. Once he plays a single down in the CFL we can maybe go with Chad Johnson gridiron football. Dbrodbeck (talk) 03:14, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Just as Xoloz essentially stated (but not exactly), in most countries, "football" is what Americans call "soccer". Disambiguating this title as so would only make sense if the English Wikipedia were only available for viewing in America. Steel1943 (talk) 04:20, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. In most of the English-speaking world "football" does not mean soccer, and only soccer partisans call it football in most of the English-speaking world. The non-English world is not material to the discussion. Most of the English-speaking world uses "soccer" to indicate soccer. -- 65.94.77.36 (talk) 10:05, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I know we're supposed to assume good faith but this looks like trolling. Maybe you're just ignorant. Zarcadia (talk) 06:22, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose for now. How about Chad Johnson (Wide receiver)? Chad Johnson (Gridiron football) works for me.Television fan (talk) 13:28, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Johnson has had a pretty major NFL career so far. Even if he ends up playing a year or two in the CFL, the current title still reflects his primary claim to notability and would be a more likely search term. My test would be this: years down the line, will we think of "Chad Johnson, the American football player who also played a few years in Canada" or "Chad Johnson, the gridiron football player who played in the US and Canada"? And if we're ever going to move, Chad Johnson (gridiron football) would be the usual way of doing it. Chad Johnson (wide receiver) is unnecessary unless there were another notable gridiron football player of the same name. --BDD (talk) 18:06, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree with condition. Since there isn't a soccer player named Chad Johnson with a Wikipedia page, Chad Johnson (football) is acceptable because he can't be confused with a soccer player of the same name; however, it should be reviewable in the future should another Chad Johnson garner a Wikipedia page.Television fan (talk) 14:39, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That isn't really the issue. The problem is that disambiguating terms cannot be themselves ambiguous. Chad Johnson (football) creates confusion for the reader because -- if Johnson is otherwise unknown to the reader -- it isn't clear what sport Johnson plays. [edit]
Any additional comments:
He has played 7 seven years as Johnson (2001-2007), and 4 years as Ochocinco (2008-2011). Unlike Cat Stevens whose popularity is based upon his performances as Cat Stevens solely, Johnson's popularity (especially in Cincinnati) was made as Johnson, and 5 of his 6 Pro Bowl appearances were as Johnson. To be sure, Ochocinco is more memorable and marketable, but his impact on professional football has been made as Johnson.Television fan (talk) 14:14, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Under contract to play" v. "Plays"

[edit]

Johnson is under contract to play (or has signed to play for the Montreal Alouettes; currently he has not played for the team in a game. Editor Rockchalk717 equates "signing a contract" as "playing" for a team; however, in the April 18 edit at 17:42, editor Shawn in Montreal notes that "once again, he's been signed. That's all. He hasn't played a single snap in any game."

Johnson hasn't played for the team, has he? He can still get hurt before a first game or get cut (like happened to him after he signed with Miami), can't he?Television fan (talk) 18:53, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: not moved. Clear consensus against using "gridiron". A reasonable amount of support for this article being the primary topic, but we would need to have a proper multi-move RM for that to have a consensus. So I'm closing this and will start a new RM immediately. Jenks24 (talk) 08:31, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Chad Johnson (American football)Chad Johnson (gridiron football) – Hope this doesn't start trouble but now that he's played in the NFL and CFL it should be changed. See:Wikipedia:Naming conventions (sportspeople). Relisted. Jenks24 (talk) 13:35, 4 August 2014 (UTC) WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 17:35, 28 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, looking at the other articles linked at Chad Johnson, I'm wondering if a PRIMARYTOPIC case couldn't be made for this one, which would mean we wouldn't need a disambig label at all. Egsan Bacon (talk) 17:05, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just checked the page view stats. This article was viewed more than 9 times as often over the past month as the one on Chad Johnson the hockey player (28557 vs. 3116). The other's aren't close (for example, the physicist/photographer had 95). Propose moving to Chad Johnson instead. Remaining where it is, second choice. Egsan Bacon (talk) 17:15, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support move to Chad Johnson while moving the disambiguation page there now to Chad Johnson (disambiguation). No matter where he plays in the tail end of his career he is most notable and will probably always be most notable for playing American football. But looking over all the choices, he is by far the primary topic for this name, so just move it there. - WPGA2345 - 01:24, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • First choice is move to Chad Johnson and move the current page to the DAB. Second choice is to leave it here. That he caught a few balls once or twice in a few Canadian Football games is a footnote on his career. He is primarily known as an American Football player. If he decided to take up culinary arts and starting working in a restaurant, we wouldn't move this to Chad Johnson American football player and chef. Leaving it here is fine, but it would be better to move this to the primary target, which it is. I don't otherwise agree with the OP's rationale for the move he's proposing. --Jayron32 02:15, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: Wikipedia rules require a worldwide view of the article subject and seeing that to the rest of the world, football is this, not what this Chad Johnson plays, that would violate this rule.--Rockchalk717 02:01, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth

[edit]

According to both the CFL and NFL player stats, Chad Johnson was born in LA, CA. and not Miami, FL as this article states. Both of the citations mention Miami as places he grew up, and as his "hometown" but neither state that he was born there. I think the article should be amended. Witness to Roger Stone arrest

[edit]

Just wanted to get a feel for this -- is it trivial or nontrivial that Mr. Johnson witnessed the FBI's arrest of his neighbor, Roger Stone? Given that Johnson has commented upon the subject repeatedly, and numerous national and state news outlets picked up the story (including retrospectives a year after the event), I'm inclined to include it as a noteworthy part of Johnson's biography -- but clearly my opinions are not universal. It appears that the account "User:Roger roger 6am," who has not made any edits since 2019, attempted to add the event to the page when it happened and the text was removed within the day by User:Dermato1. Anyways, posting this so folks can comment. Tagging User:Jayron32 out of courtesy. RexSueciae (talk) 21:14, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It really is trivial. There's nothing about his biography that is impacted by living next door to another famous person. That he's mentioned it more than once doesn't really matter. He's a football player, not a professional neighbor. --Jayron32 12:11, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Wiki mentions that André the Giant was driven to school by Samuel Beckett -- living next door to famous people, and witnessing a newsworthy / historical event involving that famous person, when you yourself are famous, seems like a clear indicator of notability. After all, he's a professional football player, but there are non-football topics mentioned in his article. RexSueciae (talk) 14:15, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
