Darth Revan, later known simply as Revan, is the player character of the 2003 role-playing video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and its upcoming remake by BioWare. |
Approx. 4,000 years before the Skywalker Saga, the former Republic war hero and Jedi knight Revan becomes a Sith lord and forms an Empire to conquer the galaxy, turning on the Republic, only to be betrayed and left for dead by Darth Malak, and captured by the Jedi, who program Revan with a false identity to have him/her rejoin their ranks and divulge subconscious memories to help defeat Malak and his Empire. Revan's true identity isn't revealed to the player until late in the game, prior to which their custom character lacks any predefined identity and "Darth Revan" is believed to be dead, returning to villainy or remaining a hero depending on players' choices and actions. |
Revan's gender, class, and facial appearance are chosen and customised by the player. Rino Romano provides the voice for the male Revan, while Charity James voices the female Revan. Since the player can choose the gender of Revan, much of the dialogue revolving around the character is gender-neutral with only a few exceptions. However, in later Star Wars Legends media, Revan is portrayed as being male. |
Revan's history is expanded and continued in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, as well as related Legends novels and comic books, in particular the 2011 novella Star Wars: The Old Republic: Revan by Drew Karpyshyn, in which it is revealed that both Revan and Malak were captured by the Sith Emperor prior to the first game's events, and brainwashed into becoming his Sith servants. Although they managed to escape his control, the pair remained loyal to the dark side of the Force and went on to form their own Sith Empire. Regaining more of his memories after the first game, Revan left to stop the true Sith Emperor, but ended up tortured as his prisoner. As such, however, Revan was able to mentally influence him to delay his planned invasion of the Republic. In the massively multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic set 300 years afterward, Revan is freed, but his mind is eroded. A corrupted Force ghost "remnant" of Revan serves as the eponymous antagonist of the Shadow of Revan expansion, voiced by Jeff Bennett. Years later, Revan's purified ghost appears in the Echoes of Oblivion story and helps destroy the Emperor for good. |

Revan is depicted as formerly a promising Jedi, but also proud, headstrong, and overeager to learn, even about Sith magics. When the Jedi Council hesitated to help the Galactic Republic ferociously attacked by Mandalorians, the charismatic Revan with his best friend (and later apprentice) Malak rallied numerous Jedi volunteers to go fight in the Mandalorian Wars despite warnings of the Council who feared the true threat had not yet revealed itself. A third of the Republic fleet was placed under Revan's command, and it was mainly thanks to his brilliant leadership that Mandalorians were totally defeated three years later. Following this triumph, however, Revan and Malak left with their fleet for the unknown space only to return a year later as Darth Revan and Darth Malak at the head of a massive armada of alien ships. Calling themselves and their followers "Sith", they declared war on the Republic and sought to kill or convert those Jedi who had not followed them to the Mandalorian Wars. With superior technology and Revan's leadership, the Sith seemed unstoppable until a Jedi strike team led by Bastila Shan boarded Revan's flagship, intending to capture him. As Revan was preparing to clash with the Jedi who had reached his bridge, Malak treacherously ordered his own ship to fire on the bridge, hoping to destroy both the Jedi and his Master. But Bastila survived, as did the badly injured Revan whom she would take to the Jedi Council who chose to program his damaged mind with a new identity that the player creates at the beginning of the game, also choosing the character's gender and appearance (though canonically, Revan is male). |
Knights of the Old Republic begins with Revan, unaware of his true identity, awaking on a starship under attack. Throughout the game, he learns about his former self as about a dead historical figure, trains to be a Jedi again with Bastila's help, and assembles a band of followers as he searches for "Star Maps" on different planets to lead him back to the Star Forge – an ancient dark side-imbued factory that Revan used to create his armada. Before completing his search, he encounters Darth Malak, who reveals to Revan his original identity as a Sith Lord and captures Bastila, whom he later turns to the dark side, though her ultimate fate depends on the player's choices. Canonically, Revan remains loyal to the Jedi and turns the fallen Bastila back to the light. Before their final duel, Malak remarks that Revan is now stronger than he ever was as a Dark Lord, but also memorably taunts him: "Savior, conquerer, hero, villain. You are all things, Revan... and yet you are nothing. In the end you belong to neither the light nor the darkness. You will forever stand alone." Nevertheless, the duel ends with Malak’s death, and the Star Forge is destroyed soon after. The last scene of the game's canonical ending shows Revan and his companions being honored by the Republic at the site of the temple on Rakata Prime. A picture of later events has emerged from subsequent games and novels. |
The sequel Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords reveals that after the defeat of Malak, Revan recalled a threat from his time as a Sith Lord, and left known space to deal with it. But first, he bade farewell to the nine comrades who had accompanied him on his quest, knowing that none of them could safely travel with him to the places he had to go to; the only NPC with a certain knowledge of where and why Revan left (his navigation droid, T3-M4) won't divulge the information. Clues to the nature of the threat emerge from in-game dialogue with non-player characters. G0-T0 notes that Revan while fighting the Republic deliberately left its infrastructure and military production facilities in tact as if he had seen a war on another front, and Mical observes that Revan killed political leaders who would cause destabilization and thinks that "he was trying to unify the galaxy against some other threat." Carth Onasi thinks that Revan "remembered something terrible that he had done during the Mandalorian Wars, and he went to put an end to it", and that "he asked us to stay to keep the Republic safe." In a conversation cut from the vanilla game but since restored, Canderous confesses that Revan revealed to him that a terrible evil from the Unknown Regions had tricked the Mandalorians to fight the Republic and had waited for them to destroy each other. Finally, at the end of the game, Kreia states that Revan went to fight the ancient, true Sith Empire that waits in the dark for the coming great war, and tells the Jedi Exile to follow him, as T3 will show her the way. |
Kreia, known for her unorthodox teachings that do not sit well with either Jedi or Sith, has much to say about Revan, her former Padawan, though he later learned from other Masters too. She declares, "Revan was power. Staring into his eyes was like staring into the heart of the Force." She mentions that what called Revan to the Mandalorian Wars may have been his home – he was rumored to have been born in the Outer Rim that was hit by Mandalorians first. According to Kreia, they shaped Revan and his fellow Jedi through the brutal conflict, taught them to despise weakness, and turned them into a weapon against the Republic. Yet she suggests that Revan never fell to the dark side, but instead sacrificed himself, becoming the dark lord to prevent a greater evil, and that the Jedi Council did not later program him with a new identity as they claimed, but merely allowed his true self willing to fight to save others to re-emerge. However, she also believes that he used the atrocities of the Mandalorian Wars to convert his Jedi followers to the dark side. Similarly, HK-47, Revan's assassin droid, theorizes that Revan designed the final, most devastating battle of the Wars primarily to break the Jedi's will and make them loyal only to himself, and to kill those with whom this could not be done. |
Despite frequent mentions, Revan visibly appears in the game only in the tomb of Ludo Kressh on Korriban where the Jedi Exile fights a silent vision of Darth Revan who is wielding two lightsabers, one red and one violet. The game lists the color crystal of the lightsaber obtained from them as a unique red color. |

The story of this book starts two years after Malak's defeat. Distressed by nightmares that are fragments of his lost memories, Revan is determined to learn more about his past to protect those he loves. He leaves his pregnant wife Bastila behind to help Canderous find Mandalore's Mask which Revan hid after he had slain the last Mandalore (Mandalorian leader) at the end of the Mandalorian Wars. As the mask is recovered, so are Revan's memories of Mandalore – before dying he told Revan that he had been manipulated by a red-skinned Sith to start the war against the Republic. In the tomb where the mask was hidden, Revan also finds a Sith datacron mentioning the planet Nathema. He encourages Canderous to don the Mask and re-assemble the Mandalorians as the new Mandalore to defend against the Sith threat, and then he travels to Nathema only with T3-M4. He finds it wholly bereft of the Force due to what the Sith Lord Vitiate did here a thousand years ago. After Naga Sadow's defeat, Vitiate lured the remaining Sith Lords to his homeworld and tricked them into a ritual that transferred their life essence as well as that of everyone else on the planet to him, giving him immortality and immense power. He then blamed the atrocity on the Jedi and led the other Sith survivors as their Emperor to the planet Dromund Kaas that became the capital of the re-established Sith Empire. |
Revan is overwhelmed with memories upon reaching Nathema's orbit, and his ship The Ebon Hawk is shot down by red-skinned Sith – Darth Nyriss and her servant Lord Scourge. They capture Revan, but T3 repairs his ship and escapes with it. Revan is then imprisoned in Nyriss' stronghold on Dromund Kaas. She remembers him – after Mandalorians' defeat, Revan and Malak found their way to the planet and the Emperor himself, but he mentally dominated them, completing their fall to the dark side and making them his servants. Having searched their minds for information, he sent them to find the Star Forge and use it against the Republic. To the Emperor's surprise, however, Revan and Malak were strong enough to later break free of his control, though they remained on the dark side. By interrogating Revan, Nyriss and Scourge hope to find how he overcame the domination of the Emperor whom they themselves conspire against. They too discovered his dark past and fear his plans for the future, including the invasion of the Republic which could ultimately lead to the Sith's destruction. While Nyriss loses interest in Revan after six months, Scourge becomes fascinated with the Jedi prisoner, and the two learn much from each other. With Nyriss refusing to move against the Emperor, Scourge grows open to Revan's offer of help to kill him. |
Three years after Revan's capture, Meetra Surik, also known as the Jedi Exile, shows to Bastila T3's recording of Revan being abducted by the Sith. Meetra then goes to Nathema which leads her to Dromund Kaas where she teams up with Scourge to free Revan. Needing more help to rescue Revan from Nyriss' stronghold, Scourge denounces Nyriss to the Emperor so that he would send the Imperial Guard to destroy her and Revan could be freed in the mayhem. The plan succeeds, though Scourge and Meetra were nearly killed by Nyriss before Revan stepped in and turned her to ashes by reflecting her powerful lightning storm back at her with his hands. By then, Revan had donned his iconic mask, which caused all his memories to return. It had been given to him by Meetra who had got it from Bastila who had kept it since her first confrontation with Revan. Once in safety, T3 plays to Revan a hologram from Bastila with their three-year-old son Vaner. |
The next morning, Revan, Meetra, T3, and Scourge sneak into the Emperor's Citadel and battle his guards. To prevent reinforcements, Revan collapses the hallway behind them. Once the heroes are inside the throne room, Revan orders T3 to seal the door. While Meetra and Scourge are finishing off the guards, Revan engages the Emperor with some success, opening himself to both the light and the dark side of the Force. The Emperor's attacks grow ever more powerful, however. When Revan, being burned by lightning, falls to the floor, T3 attacks the Emperor with his flamethrower, but is promptly destroyed. As the Emperor is about to kill Revan with his own lightsaber, Meetra knocks it out of his hand with a lighsaber throw. When Revan, Meetra, and Scourge seem ready to take on the Emperor together, Scourge suddenly has a vision of another Jedi killing the Emperor. Believing none of the three can defeat him, Scourge stabs Meetra's back, and she dies. Revan is then struck unconscious by the Emperor's lightning. Scourge is rewarded with immortality after lying that he has lured the Jedi here so they could be killed and showing his willingness to kill Revan. The Emperor stops the killing blow, however, so he could torture Revan for information, but Meetra's ghost helps him resist, and he is even able to mentally influence his captor to delay the invasion of the Republic. Revan's wife and son live their lives in peace; Vaner becomes a politician rather than a Jedi. |

Revan re-emerges in Star Wars: The Old Republic after a team of Republic heroes manages to rescue him from the Emperor's Maelstrom Prison with the help of the ghost of the Jedi Exile. It is revealed that Revan was kept alive for centuries as a prisoner by the Emperor to channel Revan's strength in the Force. Revan's link with the Emperor was two-way, however, and he was able to keep the Emperor's darker urges in check, thereby preventing the Emperor from unleashing his full power upon the galaxy before the Republic and Jedi Order had grown enough again to be able to stand a chance against the Sith Empire. Though thankful to the Republic for rescuing him, Revan decides to fight the Emperor on his own terms and takes control of a Rakatan installation called "The Foundry" and engineers a droid army (led by HK-47) programmed to identify and eliminate any target with Sith DNA, which not only included Dark Lords of the Sith but also the majority of citizens of the Empire. Revan's plan is thwarted when a group of Imperials manages to infiltrate the Foundry and destroy the droid army and HK-47 before confronting Revan. After a vicious battle, Revan is defeated but disappears before a killing blow can be delivered. |
Revan appears again in the "Legacy of Rakata Prime" flashpoint as the mastermind behind the conspiracy in the "Forged Alliances" plotline. He is the primary antagonist of the fourth digital expansion to The Old Republic, entitled Shadow of Revan, in which he returns to destroy the Republic and Empire. He leads a group of followers known as the Order of Revan or "Revanites", into infiltrating both galactic powers and influencing them into annihilating each other. Some Republic and Imperial forces also declare themselves loyal to Revan. Revan then draws the Empire and Republic into a battle with his Revanite ships over the planet Rishi, so that neither the Republic nor the Empire can interfere when he confronts the Emperor. However, his plan is thwarted when the player character sends a communication to Republic and Imperial ships informing them of Revan's plan and telling them to cease all fire. |
Revan is later cornered on Yavin 4 where he tries to raise the Emperor but is confronted and defeated by the player and an alliance of Republic and Imperial characters. After the Emperor makes his presence known and leaves Yavin 4, an apparition of Revan appears and reveals that when he was defeated in the Foundry, only his light side became one with the Force, while his dark side, fueled by hate for the Emperor, survived, setting off the "Forged Alliances" plotline. The two sides of Revan, one Jedi, the other Sith, then reunite, with his now-whole spirit warning the player and his allies that they must undo what he has done, lest otherwise the Emperor will see his evil plans through and everything will be lost. |
In the Echoes of Oblivion story, Revan's spirit returns to aid the player character in defeating the duplicate spirit of the Sith Emperor before he can possess Satele Shan. |
====Other appearances==== |
In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic comic series, Revan can be seen during the Mandalorian Wars, wielding a violet lightsaber and known as "the Revanchist". Notably, the 42nd issue explains how Revan came to wear his iconic mask. It belonged to a Mandalorian who tried to stop his superior from slaughtering defenseless Cathar, and then perished with them. After seeing a vision of the massacre, Revan vowed to wear the mask until the Mandalorians were defeated. |
In Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, Revan appears as a holographic avatar for a holocron discovered by Darth Bane. |
In celebration of KotOR 15th anniversary, Electronic Arts added the Jedi Knight variant of Revan to Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes as a playable character on October 18, 2018. Months later, the Sith version, Darth Revan, was included in the game as the first unlockable Dark Side mythic character, followed by Darth Malak. |

Revan was originally slated to appear in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In the third-season episode "Ghosts of Mortis," Revan would have appeared as a Sith Lord alongside Darth Bane as advisors to the Son, a dark side embodiment. Revan was cut from the episode in late production since their presence would conflict with Lucas' view of the Force at the time. |
