I ended up on this page because I was re-readig a classic:

"They don't think nothing of pulling a shot-tower up by the roots, and belting a Sunday-school superintendent over the head with it—or any other man." - Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Kindle Locations 336-337).

If there was no 'shot-tower" page, would I have ended up with this fascinating information? Possibly - but not as easily/ This page is Google's first result for shot-tower.

The whole point is to make a useful reference for users, no?

:The two are somewhat related, and perhaps shot towers could be considered a type of prilling tower. In addition to free falling down a tower, prills can also be formed by dropping the molten product through liquid nitrogen, which doesn't require a "tower" at all. == Crane Park Shot Tower, Twickenham, UK ? ==

There is much discussion as to whether this was actually a 'shot' tower, or if it was just a watchmans tower. Surrounded as it was by gunpowder mills it would have been highly dangerous to use a furnace to melt lead. The men and horses allowed on the site had to have special shoes because a spark from a hob-nail on a stone was enough to cause an explosion, so a fire and moulten lead would be out of the question. Also the 'rule books' for the site contained specific instructions for all activities but don't mention making shot. Also, the tower is too short to successfully make lead shot; there is not enough of a drop to make the pellets round. It is commonly called the 'shot' tower, should it be included on this list. I measured the angle to the top from the NE conrner of Gold and Alexandra at 20 to 22 degrees, using GPS phone.

Google Earth puts this distance at 176m along the4 ground.
h = 176 * Tan(22deg) = 71M, 176 * TAN(20deg) = 65M.

Both measurments are taller than the 50m referenced to Heritage Victoria. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.198.78.240 (talk) 08:13, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Oldest Tower in the US?
There's conflicting information in this article. The Sparks Shot Tower's notes claims that it's the oldest shot tower in the United States, as does its historical marker, which is featured in a photo in its own article, but the Jackson Ferry Shot Tower is listed as being a year older both here and in its own article. Obviously these things cannot be true at the same time, so we should try to find out which is accurate.

Merger with Shot (pellet)

Connection with prilling towers

[edit]

Prilling tower redirects here, and evidently refers to a current method of forming fertilizer, yet here nothing is mentioned of this. What to do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.189.108.27 (talk) 06:05, 8 August 2007‎ (UTC)[reply]

Good question! Might want to ask User:The Anome, as he was the one who created the redirect. DMacks 06:23, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The two are somewhat related, and perhaps shot towers could be considered a type of prilling tower. However, I think prill manufacturing should have an article to itself, as it is a more advanced and modern technique. In addition to free falling down a tower, prills can also be formed by dropping the molten product through liquid nitrogen, which doesn't require a "tower" at all. In fact, a type of ice cream, Dippin' Dots, is made in this exact manner. So I say it should not redirect here, nor should this article be modified to go into prill manufacturing. --Dan East 11:29, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
