Projects delivered

Statue of comfort women in Central, Hong Kong. The new 2,000 word article on Comfort women in the arts was created by a student on the Korean Studies MSc course programme this month.

Progress

The Wikidata Map of Accused Witches project

• The resident met with his line manager, Karen Howie, this month to identify areas of improvement to be made the Wikidata Map of Accused Witches in Scotland following a flurry of activity from our student interns earlier this Summer. Ten areas have been targeted for improvement with the custom timeline interface and site title identified as the most pressing. The developer, Richard Lawson, has been asked to make improvements in line with our suggestions but we are considering recruiting a student intern to work part-time to support us in terms of quality assuring the data and making sure the data and visualisations are consistent and working as expected. The resident also used the data in Wikidata to create two new data visualisations using the Flourish platform.

Women in Red workshops

One new Women in Red workshop was held on Friday 28th October 2022 - our 66th monthly workshop at the university.

• 5 new articles were created at the 28 October 2022 event inc. a new article on the Alloa witches and Katherine Campbell (accused witch) (born circa 1677; died 10 June 1697) who was a maidservant accused of theft and witchcraft during the last major witch hunt in western Europe, the Paisley witch trials.

Ada Lovelace Day workshop - celebrating Women in STEM

One new Women in Red workshop was held on Tuesday 11th October 2022 for Ada Lovelace Day - our annual celebration of Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The event took place at the University's Main Library 11am-5pm with the student Computing Society collaborating and an invited guest speaker (Professor Emma Hart from Edinburgh Napier University. • 2 new articles were created at the Ada Lovelace Day event inc. a new article on Agnes Marion Moodie (6 October 1881 - 1969) who was a Scottish chemist and the first female chemistry graduate from the University of St Andrews. Also created was the article on Ethel Luis (28 August 1898 – 30 May 1998), a Scottish chemist who was one of the first women appointed to the chemistry staff of the University of Dundee during the Second World War.

Progress

Wikimedia in the Curriculum - current work

• Five new case studies can now be added to the Wikimedia in Education - Booklet of Case Studies. Dr. Glaire Anderson, History of Art, and Evelyn Balsells PhD, Global Health Challenges Pg Online, have signed off on their case studies and images to be used. Graphic designer, Nicky Greenhorn, has submitted a new proof design for the new case studies as of 21 September 2022 and this will now be reviewed by Dr. Sara Thomas, Wikimedia UK, and myself to see if any further changes are required. NB: October was a very busy month for the residency so will return to reviewing this now.
• The Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment for Semester One session is to begin with two in-person training workshops for the 2,500 word 2022/2023 assignment began on 12 October 2022 with 63 students in the cohort this year. The students have all chosen their articles now as of 7 November 2022 and been taught best practice about how to translate their article. The assignment will conclude 13 January 2023.
• The Reproductive Biology BSc Wikipedia assignment concluded on 5 October 2022 with 37 Honours students researching in a 3hr workshop on 21 September and then publishing their edits in the 3 hour workshop on 5th October 2022.
• The Korean Studies MSc workshop to introduce students to evaluating how Korean culture and history are represented online and how they can improve it took place on 19th October 2022 in the University's Main Library.
• The Global Health Challenges Pg Online 1,500 word assignment began its 4th iteration on Monday 10th October 2022. 21,000 words have been added to Wikipedia stub articles about natural and manmade disasters so far. A 30 minute video webinar on a recent case study of Wikipedia in the Curriculum on the Global Health Challenges Pg Online course programme at the University of Edinburgh was delivered on 15 June 2022 for the University's Learning and Teaching Conference 2022. This has now been published on the University's Media Hopper channel.
• The Digital Education MSc component on Wikipedia and Knowledge Equity is to go ahead in February 2023 as a 2 week block inc. training webinar, short activities, assigned reading and discussion forums.
• The Data Fair 2022 on the Design Informatics MA/MFA went ahead on Thursday 29th September 2022 where the Masters students work in groups of 3 and have 7 weeks to work practically with real-world datasets to generate creative visualisations to showcase by the end of their assignment. The residency pitched two data proposals: Witchcrafty data and Wiki Loves Monuments data. Two groups decided to work with Wiki Loves Monuments data and images over the next 7 weeks. Link to slides.
• History of Art UG course programme - awaiting confirmation that Dr. Glaire Anderson wishes to continue and do a 3rd iteration of UG students improving Wikipedia's coverage of Islamic art and science in semester two (Jan to March 2023).

Conferences

• The resident presented a 1hr session on Open Science and the University of Edinburgh during Open Access week on 27 October 2022. This event was hosted by Rute Correia, Wikimedian in Residence at NOVA FCSH, a social and human sciences faculty in Lisbon. This is a partnership with Wikimedia Portugal. The presentation was recorded and will be shared to Wikimedia Portugal's YouTube channel in due course.

Wikipedia Editing - Edinburgh Award activity to begin on 19th October for year two

• The second iteration of the Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia - a new Edinburgh Award to accredit students for extended project work on Wikipedia began with a new cohort on 19th October 2022. 44 students registered initially with 22 submitting their 400 word action plans by the Award's first deadline - Friday 28th October 2022. Their project pages will be added to our main page for the Edinburgh Award in due course.

• Discussed with my line manager, Karen Howie, about submitting conference abstracts to LILAC, DigiFest and the Times Higher Education's Digital Universities conferences.
• Invited by Lianna Davis of the Wikipedia and Education User Group to do a presentation on Teaching Wikidata at the University of Edinburgh on November 3rd.
