== Deletion: "Indiana Militia Corps" ==

I would like an explanation of how one organization (Indiana Militia) can be deleted on the basis of "no current notability" when another org (Michigan Militia) is kept on the grounds that "notability doesn't expire". I am confused by this disparity.
==File copyright problem with File:Indianamilitiacorpslogo.jpg==
[[File:Copyright-problem.svg|64px|left]]
Thank you for uploading [[:File:Indianamilitiacorpslogo.jpg]]. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes [[Wikipedia:Copyrights|copyright]] very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the '''license''' and the '''source''' of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a '''[[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags|copyright tag]]''' to the [[Help:Image page|image description page]].

Here's the comments from the Michigan Militia AfD page:
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following [http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=upload&user=JP419 this link].

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the [[Wikipedia:Media copyright questions|media copyright questions page]]. Thanks again for your cooperation.<!-- Template:Di-no license-notice --> [[User:Skier Dude|<span style="color:ForestGreen">Skier Dude</span>]] ([[User_talk:Skier Dude|<span style="color:SaddleBrown">talk</span>]]) 03:50, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
:There was no double standard - despite considerable research by two editors, there was a clear consensus at [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Indiana Militia Corps (2nd nomination)|this debate]] that the Indiana militia is not notable, but at [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michigan Militia|that one]] that the Michigan militia is. It was not suggested that the Indiana militia had once been notable but is no longer: in fact your argument was "''their operations are sure to increase, and consequently they WILL be in the news... ''", but that is the [[WP:UPANDCOMING]] argument, which we do not accept. If you disagree with the result of the AfD, you can take it to [[WP:Deletion review]], but read the instructions on that page: it is not intended for continuing the same discussion, but for arguing that the debate was wrongly closed. Regards, [[User:JohnCD|JohnCD]] ([[User talk:JohnCD#top|talk]]) 22:06, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

:: And you deleted the article unfairly by [[WP:LAWYER|wikilawyering]] the argument and moving to delete as soon as possible. Deleting the article does not improve WP and overlooks the fact that there are other articles in the category of militia groups with far less notability (by your application of standards). I'm simply pointing out that the category has high notability at this time, and additional citations are sure to follow; we cannot be sure what will be published, but in any event the singling out of one article and ignoring everything I had to say is '''not''' best practices. I am beginning to believe that the critics of WP are correct about the underlying bias here, hiding behind a guideline to justify your rigid desire to delete an article contrary to the spirit and the principles of Wikipedia. As I said before, a guideline is subordinate to the Five Pillars. And yes, I will appeal. What you did was wrong. Wikipedia is supposed to be improved, not winnowed. Deletionism in WP is contrary to the principles guiding it! [[User:JP419|JP419]] ([[User talk:JP419|talk]]) 08:08, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi,
You cannot simply re-create this article, and I have deleted it under [[WP:CSD#G4]], "Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion". If you want to challenge the deletion, you should do so at [[WP:Deletion review]]; but please read the instructions on that page, which include:
<blockquote>'''This process should ''not'' be used simply because you disagree with a deletion debate's outcome''' for reasons previously presented but instead if you think the closer interpreted the debate incorrectly or have some significant new information pertaining to the debate that was not available on Wikipedia during the debate. Equally, this process should ''not'' be used to point out [[WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS|other pages]] that have not been deleted where your page has — each page is different and stands or falls on its own merits.</blockquote>
See also [[WP:ANI#Indiana Militia Corps|this thread]] on the administrators' notice-board. [[User:JohnCD|JohnCD]] ([[User talk:JohnCD|talk]]) 10:53, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

:I've userfied the article for you. It can be found at [[User:JP419/Indiana Militia Corps]]. Once the article is fully compliant with WP standards it may be moved back into mainspace. [[User:Mjroots|Mjroots]] ([[User talk:Mjroots|talk]]) 16:05, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
As much as I'd like to help, I'm afraid I'm out of touch with current policies to properly moderate the discussion. If the article is nominated for deletion, you should make your arguments there, and let the current administrators who are involved in the page clean up to judge the discussion. 4 years ago, consensus was reached to keep the article because it was changed to make it notable. If, notability has changed since 4 years ago, or consensus differs, then I'm sorry, the article should be deleted. I understand you being an inclusionist, but the things I'm finding about it doesn't warrant it necessarily being that notable to have a page on its own. Maybe a footnote in another article, but that's all I can tell. --[[User:AllyUnion|AllyUnion]] [[User talk:AllyUnion|(talk)]] 08:32, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

::The version I userfied was the last one before deletion, minus a tag or two and with a tweak so that the userfied article does not appear in the various categories - remove the : before "Category" after you've moved the article. Between the two versions you should have enough to work with. [[User:Mjroots|Mjroots]] ([[User talk:Mjroots|talk]]) 19:32, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
:Thanks for the quick reply. Actually, the article hasn't been properly nominated yet.. Fortunately, the individual in question (in this instance) was kind enough to use the talk page first before making radical edits. I'd hate to see hours of work flushed, because I'm not about to engage in an edit war, though certainly this subject (militias in the USA) has attracted precisely that sort of activity. Could/should edit protection be considered?

:::The venue for undeletion discussions is [[WP:DRV]]. However, you may be better off working on improving the userfied article and then recreating the article once it is ready. [[User:Mjroots|Mjroots]] ([[User talk:Mjroots|talk]]) 19:41, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
:This user's concept of notability, and his desire to delete the article, centers around a narrow interpretation of what he considers acceptable sources. He seems to think that ONLY mainstream media (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and corporate printed journalism such as Newsweek or USA Today) can be cited. Isn't it true that membership organizations with an online presence such as Constitution.org, or publishing affiliates of an org like TheNewAmerican.com (magazine of the John Birch Society) can be sited a third party sources? (Especially if the material in question is accessible online?)

::::Well, JohnCD is just another editor in this matter (OK, he's an admin, but that doesn't give him any more clout in a debate). He's entitled to his opinion as are all other editors. If you take it to DRV, the case for undeletion can be argued. I still think that the better option would be to work on the userfied article. References from reliable third-party sources do much to establish notability for an article. [[User:Mjroots|Mjroots]] ([[User talk:Mjroots|talk]]) 19:58, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
:Oh, one last question: How do I determine who the administrator of a page is? If the page has no administrator, what can I do? How does one go about doing that? There are a number of other pages I am interested in taking a more active role in, assuming that I don't get edit warred / reverted to death for making good improvements.

:::::One possible course of action is to work up the article, then go to DRV, where you can link to the userfied version. I note that the rationale for deletion was that the organisation didn't ''currently'' meet notability criteria. The inference there is that this situation could change. [[User:Mjroots|Mjroots]] ([[User talk:Mjroots|talk]]) 20:18, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
:Thanks again.

Xeno, I have taken a hiatus from editing the Indiana Militia Corps article and from Wikipedia because I got sick of dealing with cocksuckers like Angryapathy and other liberal, anti-patriot types infesting Wikipedia. I could not afford to invest the amount of time needed to appeal the article's deletion, because the arguments for deletion were simply bullshit. The organization is notable AND current. You'll notice that the article continues to remain deleted even though there is plenty of media coverage about them now, just as I predicted back in January/February. I'll probably put the article back up one last time, I don't care if it gets me permanently banned from Wikipedia because it's all a bunch of crap anyhow; I know that the subject of citizen militias is worthy of unbiased examination and Wikipedia is regarded by many to be a source of information that covers nearly every subject; the topic deserves to be treated without bias.

:I'll ignore your insult, and repeat what has been said many times before: The article in question is not notable according to Wikipedia's policies. This says nothing about the importance of the group in general. Accusing people of some liberal conspiracy is also not helpful; we are treating this article the same way we'd treat any other article which no significant coverage can be found. I'm sorry you feel you have to take our actions personally. [[User:Angryapathy|Angryapathy]] ([[User talk:Angryapathy|talk]]) 13:27, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
:: Membership organizations with an online presence is not a way to establish notability. I'll explain my reasoning why. Suppose you have 10 friends, living within your region (50 miles, let's say) and have them start 10 independent local food review magazines. They all decide to publish their magazines online. You open a restaurant, and have them review it. Does this mean your restaurant is notable enough to merit an article in the Wikipedia?

== Patriot movement ==
:: I'm not saying though, that your references are not notable, but I'm only trying to highlight how the argument could be made for a little cafe out of in the middle of nowhere, who decided on a whim, to put themselves in the Wikipedia for advertisement purposes.
There is no documented distinction that I know of between the "Patriot movement" and the "Christian patriot movement." Why should there be two articles? 23:28, 22 April 2010 (UTC) <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">—Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[Special:Contributions/207.171.180.101|207.171.180.101]] ([[User talk:207.171.180.101|talk]]) </span><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

==MfD nomination of [[User:JP419/Indiana Militia Corps]]==
:: As quoted from [[Wikipedia:Verifiability]]: ''The most reliable sources are usually peer-reviewed journals; books published by university presses; university-level textbooks; magazines, journals, and books published by respected publishing houses; and mainstream newspapers. Electronic media may also be used, subject to the same criteria. Academic and peer-reviewed publications are highly valued and usually the most reliable sources in areas where they are available, such as history, medicine, and science. Material from reliable non-academic sources may also be used in these areas, particularly if it appears in respected mainstream publications.''
[[User:JP419/Indiana Militia Corps]], a page you substantially contributed to, has been nominated for [[WP:MfD|deletion]]. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at [[Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:JP419/Indiana Militia Corps ]] and please be sure to [[WP:SIG|sign your comments]] with four tildes (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>). I have included in this nomination the other copy [[User:JP419/rescued pages-Indiana Militia Corps]]. ::: Actually, you made my argument in stating: "Material from reliable non-academic sources may also be used in these areas". The problem with trying to make the page meet Wikipedia quality standards in the first place is the fact that there is little material about militia groups that is accurate. All too often I have seen information posted on articles relating to citizen militias that repeatedly make use of unsourced material, or unverifiable statements made by a secondary source. For example, the Indiana Militia article included an alleged quote from an ADL publication that was attributed to the commander of the militia, and that it was derived from an online source. I scoured the internet, also using the Internet Archive ("wayback machine"), and found not a single trace of the alleged quote. What I did find is that the ADL and SPLC, as its critics claim, actually fabricate quotes.

{|style="background:#d5dceb; border:1px solid #6881b9; margin:0.5em; padding:0.5em;border-radius: 8px;"
::: Now maybe I'm still a noob at this whole Wikipedia thing, but isn't it true that material derived from a source that turns out to be erroneous (or an outright fabrication) cannot be used in a Wikipedia article? And what then of a tertiary source that cites the original fabrication without attempting to fact-check, in essence repeating the original falsity?? I hope you see my point. It is in essence the reverse of the example you gave. Most of what is published about militias, aside from being wrong, all comes from the same tainted root. As such, it undermines the reliability and credibility of Wikipedia and lends credence to the critics of Wikipedia.

::: Or should I also adopt a deletionist position, and argue that all articles relating to militia groups be deleted, on these grounds? Christian Patriot

[edit]

I have proposed to move the article. Please comment at its talk page. Gazpacho 05:50, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion: "Indiana Militia Corps"

[edit]

I would like an explanation of how one organization (Indiana Militia) can be deleted on the basis of "no current notability" when another org (Michigan Militia) is kept on the grounds that "notability doesn't expire". I am confused by this disparity.

Here's the comments from the Michigan Militia AfD page:

  1. Keep. Once notable, always notable. - Eastmain (talk • contribs) 8:05 am, 26 January 2010, last Tuesday (2 days ago) (UTC−5)
  2. I have no particular opinion on this article but find the statement "... no longer notable" quite odd. - Rjd0060 (talk) 8:52 am, 26 January 2010, last Tuesday (2 days ago) (UTC−5)
  3. Keep. This group got plenty of RS coverage in the early-mid 1990s. Notability does not expire. A Google Books search shows non-trivial coverage too. • Gene93k (talk) 9:39 am, 26 January 2010, last Tuesday (2 days ago) (UTC−5)

Thanks for your answer in advance. JP419 (talk) 14:06, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There was no double standard - despite considerable research by two editors, there was a clear consensus at this debate that the Indiana militia is not notable, but at that one that the Michigan militia is. It was not suggested that the Indiana militia had once been notable but is no longer: in fact your argument was "their operations are sure to increase, and consequently they WILL be in the news... ", but that is the WP:UPANDCOMING argument, which we do not accept. If you disagree with the result of the AfD, you can take it to WP:Deletion review, but read the instructions on that page: it is not intended for continuing the same discussion, but for arguing that the debate was wrongly closed. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:06, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And you deleted the article unfairly by wikilawyering the argument and moving to delete as soon as possible. Deleting the article does not improve WP and overlooks the fact that there are other articles in the category of militia groups with far less notability (by your application of standards). I'm simply pointing out that the category has high notability at this time, and additional citations are sure to follow; we cannot be sure what will be published, but in any event the singling out of one article and ignoring everything I had to say is not best practices. JP419 (talk) 08:08, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Indiana Militia Corps

[edit]

You cannot simply re-create this article, and I have deleted it under WP:CSD#G4, "Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion". If you want to challenge the deletion, you should do so at WP:Deletion review; but please read the instructions on that page, which include:

This process should not be used simply because you disagree with a deletion debate's outcome for reasons previously presented but instead if you think the closer interpreted the debate incorrectly or have some significant new information pertaining to the debate that was not available on Wikipedia during the debate. Equally, this process should not be used to point out other pages that have not been deleted where your page has — each page is different and stands or falls on its own merits.

See also this thread on the administrators' notice-board. JohnCD (talk) 10:53, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've userfied the article for you. It can be found at User:JP419/Indiana Militia Corps. Once the article is fully compliant with WP standards it may be moved back into mainspace. Mjroots (talk) 16:05, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The version I userfied was the last one before deletion, minus a tag or two and with a tweak so that the userfied article does not appear in the various categories - remove the : before "Category" after you've moved the article. Between the two versions you should have enough to work with. Mjroots (talk) 19:32, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The venue for undeletion discussions is WP:DRV. However, you may be better off working on improving the userfied article and then recreating the article once it is ready. Mjroots (talk) 19:41, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, JohnCD is just another editor in this matter (OK, he's an admin, but that doesn't give him any more clout in a debate). He's entitled to his opinion as are all other editors. If you take it to DRV, the case for undeletion can be argued. I still think that the better option would be to work on the userfied article. References from reliable third-party sources do much to establish notability for an article. Mjroots (talk) 19:58, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
One possible course of action is to work up the article, then go to DRV, where you can link to the userfied version. I note that the rationale for deletion was that the organisation didn't currently meet notability criteria. The inference there is that this situation could change. Mjroots (talk) 20:18, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, JP419. You have new messages at Xeno's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

I'll ignore your insult, and repeat what has been said many times before: The article in question is not notable according to Wikipedia's policies. This says nothing about the importance of the group in general. Accusing people of some liberal conspiracy is also not helpful; we are treating this article the same way we'd treat any other article which no significant coverage can be found. I'm sorry you feel you have to take our actions personally. Angryapathy (talk) 13:27, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Patriot movement

[edit]

There is no documented distinction that I know of between the "Patriot movement" and the "Christian patriot movement." Why should there be two articles? 23:28, 22 April 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.171.180.101 (talk)

Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:JP419/Indiana Militia Corps and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). I have included in this nomination the other copy User:JP419/rescued pages-Indiana Militia Corps.
