Morality Bites is an episode of The WB drama series, Charmed. |
==Synopsis== |
After the Charmed Ones use their powers to secretly punish an ignorant man for letting his dog eject on their sidewalk, Phoebe receives a premonition. In this premonition, set in 2009, she is burned at the stake for being a witch. The three sisters cast a spell to travel to the future to learn why this will happen, but end up in the bodies of their future selves. |
In this future, Prue is the successful, but lonely owner of Buckland's Auction House, Piper is divorced from Leo and mother of a young child named Melinda, and Phoebe is in prison for murdering a baseball star named Cal Green with her advanced powers. Nathaniel Pratt, a vindictive (and borderline evil) witch-hunting district attorney who has begun to spiral the world into a modern-day wave of Salem witch trials, is responsible for convicting Phoebe. |
As Prue and Piper set out to free Phoebe, she tells them that she should pay for her crimes and burn, which she does with the whole world watching, her sisters tearfully watch. |
All three sisters then wake up on the same morning as the episode's start, just before they punished the same ignorant man with the dog. As Prue is about to punish him again, Phoebe stops her, having realized what caused the chain of events in the first place; this was the first time they used their powers to punish the guilty instead of protecting the innocent. Though the instance of punishing the ignorant man was a relatively small event in itself, its premise would eventually lead to more and more significant malpractices, to the point where they would become vindictive enough to commit retaliative murder. In addition, after a good look at the ignorant man's face, Prue realizes that he is Nathaniel Pratt, who must've been set off by their act of revenge into both becoming a DA and a witch-hunter so he could have a strong enough foothold to get rid of all witches. With a revelation accomplished and a lesson learned, the sisters agree never to use their powers for this purpose again. |

==Trivia== |
* The title of this episode is a play on words of the movie Reality Bites. |
* The future shown in this episode has been erased later in the series as Melinda Halliwell did not become Piper's first born child and Prue would not live to see 2009. Other aspects of this episode's future that differ from the one that will come to be are the facts that Wyatt and Chris do not exist, Piper and Leo are divorced, Leo is still a Whitelighter, Phoebe does not appear to have any children, and the girls did not yet know about Paige. These differences have been explained in the series when it is said that every action made in the present alters the outcome of the future. |
* This is the very first time that we see Phoebe levitate. |
* In the episode, Phoebe exhibits the power of levitation and the power of electrokinesis. In Season 3, Phoebe did develop the power to levitate at will, and in season six she developed the power of empathy, but she never develops the power of electrokinesis. It is likely that either since Phoebe was stripped of her powers she was not seen as fit to handle this power or that by the time the show ended she had not yet developed this power, since this episode took place in 2009 and the show ended in 2006. |
* Prue's telekinesis is seen to have grown to strong telekinetic blasts, similar to the power displayed by Shax in the episode All Hell Breaks Loose. |
*Although most of the things about this future are not the same as the future that we saw in Forever Charmed, one thing that did not change is that Piper will still live in the manor. |
* When future Prue and Piper are back home after getting the Book from Buckland's (and not finding the return spell), we see Prue saying some of the pages are turned down at the top. As she is saying that line, she flips a page and we see the return spell they want. The return spell and future spell are also briefly seen in the book in future episodes. |
*Also while looking through the book, Prue mentions a few spells (although we do not see them) that were used in future episodes but not the same future, since Prue was already dead by the time they were used. The first was a spell to induce slumber used in the season 5 episode Sand Francisco Dreamin. This spell could also be referring to a potion used by Billie Jenkins on the Charmed Ones in the season 8 episode The Jung and the Restless, or even the spell used later in this season to return Piper to her coma in Awakened. The second spell Prue mentions was a spell to glamour, which was used in the 7th and 8th seasons to help the Halliwells fake their own deaths. |
* Despite being in the future where their powers have already grown, the girls do not discover several of their new powers, such as astral projection, Molecular Combustion or empathy. This could be because they didn't know they had them yet so they didn't think to try and see if they had any new powers, but they might have had them all along. However, Prue and Piper do experience advanced forms of their current powers, and Phoebe sees two new powers that she believes belong to her through a premonition: levitation and electric generation. Ironically, in the episode The Eyes Have It, Phoebe's premonition power becomes more advanced and clearer to see (color, physically witnessing the event) whereas in this episode, Phoebe's power of premonitions remain the same (no color, only visually witnessing the event). |
* This is the third time a Halliwell sister gets arrested. The first was in Wicca Envy and the second was in That '70s Episode. |
* This is the only episode throughout the entire series that only feature the three lead actresses in the opening credits. |
* This is the only episode where the sisters themselves visit the future, except for two brief astral premonitions to the future experienced by Phoebe in The Eyes Have It and Hulkus Pocus. |
* Even though it was not in the present day, Phoebe dies for the third time (technically). |
* Piper also visits the future, albeit unintentionally, in the finale Forever Charmed. |
* This is the first time we see Prue and Phoebe with long hair. |
*According to the eighth season of Charmed on dvd, the attic scene when Prue blasts the wall out was done by attaching the set wall to a truck and pulling it away from the rest of the set when Shannen Doherty signals. |
