Recognised as the first point of reference for anything pertaining to Power and Electrical Equipment, IEEMA plays a primary role to facilitate the creation of a conducive environment for the growth of the electrical industry by providing key services like Policy Advocacy. The Government officials laud IEEMA for its data-backed representations. It also continues to represent the interests of its members, in consonance with National interest.

A prominent size and space is occupied by the Electrical Equipment and Machinery in the Capital Goods Sector, which is more than 45 percent of the entire Capital Goods Sector. The industry is 6.8% of the manufacturing sector in terms of value and 1.07% of the NOP. It also provides direct and indirect employment to 1.5 million people and over 5 million across the entire value chain.
History
Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers' Association (IEEMA) was established in 1948 when eight Indian companies decided to create a platform for the promotion of Indian Electrical Manufacturers’ Association (IEMA). The original signatories to the Memorandum of Articles of Association were:
* Mr. N.W. Gurjar- Kirloskar Electric Co. Ltd
* Mr. B.K. Rohatgi – India Electric Works Ltd
* Mr. C.M. Shaw- General Electric Co. (India) Ltd
* Mr. Kishenchand- Kaycee Industries Ltd
* Mr. C.G. Gorton- National Insulated Cable Co of India Ltd
* Mr. C.M. Humfrey- Associated Electrical Industries Mfg. Co. Ltd
* Mr. P.H. Bolland – Crompton Parkinson Works Ltd
* Mr. L.P. Shah- Electric Construction & Equipment Co Ltd
The establishment of the Association synchronized with attaining of independence by India reflecting the faith of Indian industrialists in the growth of various individual sectors of the economy in the atmosphere of freedom. In those years, universally, electronics had not attained the status it enjoys today and was mainly restricted to audio, broadcasting, telephonic and telegraphic communication. Telephones were still considered a luxury, affordable by elite class only. Others areas of electronics were defence oriented. Development of civilian industries in this sector was restricted. In General, electronics was considered as a part of the electrical industry.

Export promotion
In 1965, Mr. PR Deshpande, the dynamic doyen of the industry was elected as the President of IEMA (the then Indian Electrical Manufacturers Association). In the year 1969, the Head Office and active work were shifted to Mumbai in view of the fact that electrical industry was situated prominently in western and southern regions of the Country. In 1986, “Electronics” was added to IEMA and since then it is known as IEEMA.

In the year 2013, the president and the executive committee of IEEMA realized the need for strengthening the New Delhi office for effective advocacy and influencing public policy. To effectively meet this objective, the newly appointed Director General of IEEMA was located in New Delhi. In the past, many national industry associations, have at some point in time moved from the traditional centers of industry concentration, like Mumbai & Kolkatta, to the country’s capital, New Delhi to meet similar objectives. The registered office of IEEMA continues to be in Mumbai, with a strengthened secretariat at New Delhi.

Membership
IEEMA today represents about 800 member-organizations from public, joint and private sectors, whose combined annual turnover is in excess of US dollars 25 billion, with its members contributing to more than 90% of the power equipment installed in India.

In it’s the seventh decade of it's existence, IEEMA continues to provide unique services to its members. IEEMA undertakes various activities, major ones being disseminating information about government policy changes and statistics, representing views of the industry to the government, evolving price variation clauses covering a wide range of products and circulating price indices for the same, formulating industry standards etc. Some of the major achievements of IEEMA in the past two years are listed here.

Divisions
IEEMA has 24 technical divisions & committees to impart a cohesive and specialized outlook to the environment our members operate in. IEEMA conducts technical activities under various divisions, where members discuss issues concerning the industry and its growth opportunities.

As the representative organization of the electrical and industrial electronics industry in India, IEEMA is a part of councils and committees constituted by the government of India.

Voice of the Indian electrical equipment industry
IEEMA as a voice of Indian electrical industry plays a crucial policy advocacy role with central and state government and its agencies. IEEMA is invited by various central and state ministries, central PSU’s, State Utilities to provide its inputs and to play an increasing role as a “Partner of Choice” in policy formulation.

IEEMA works closely with standardisation bodies, R&D organisations, testing institutes, other apex industry bodies, autonomous institutions, trade bodies and sectoral & regional associations.

International Outreach
India’s exports of electrical equipment were INR 2,227 Crore (around USD 4.5 billion) in 2013-14 but were less than 1% of the global trade in electrical equipment. With the electricity sector being a sunrise sector across the entire developing world, there exists the significant potential for India to tap the export markets. India should target a 5% share of global trade in electrical equipment in the next ten years so that our exports reach a level of USD 25 billion.

The major export markets for Indian electrical equipment are USA, Germany, UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, UK, Nigeria, China, Kenya and Brazil, which testifies to the quality of Indian manufactured electrical equipment.

Over the years, the Indian electrical equipment industry has developed a diversified, mature and strong manufacturing base, with robust supply chain, and a rugged performance design of products. Globally Brand India presents a huge opportunity thus it is imperative to promote the growth of exports of electrical equipment that have a strong manufacturing domestic base and manufacturers need to move up the value chain.

A market diversification strategy based on the changing dynamics of growth in the world economy is necessary to sustain the growth of exports. The industry should rethink its market strategy and focus on newer markets.

Essential to retain presence and market share in existing geographies
Moving up the value chain in providing quality products
Exploring and penetrating new and emerging markets
Focus on: Africa, CIS, Latin America, ASEAN region. The industry needs the support of the Government in introducing policy changes which will specifically support exports of electrical equipment from India. These include policies related to export financing, taxation, marketing, etc. which will immensely help the Indian exporters compete better in the global arena. The Focus Product Scheme (FPS), under the Foreign Trade Policy, should be extended to cover all electrical equipment.

Indian manufacturers also need to focus on product innovation, technology, R&D, packaging, cost competitiveness. Together, we need to build a Brand India in electrical equipment domain.
