Many believe the original silver screen was the brainchild of Harry C. Williams, an Akron, Ohio projectionist who operated the Norka Theater and the Majestic Theatre in the 1920s.


The phrase's use as a metonym can be observed several years later. Williams was disappointed in how films looked when played on a white-cloth screen, so he tried applying silver paint to a denim-type cloth he hung on the wall. The new screen provided more brightness, contrast and depth while reflecting better for viewers who sat to the sides of the viewing room.

In the 1930s, Williams founded a company that manufactured and refinished thousands of movie screens for companies such as Paramount, Warner Bros. and Fox. He displayed a model of one of his screens at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933.

Williams eventually made screens for every projection method, including CinemaScope, VistaVision, Cinerama and 3-D movies. A silver screen, also known as a silver lenticular screen, is a type of projection screen that was popular in the early years[when?][vague] of the motion picture industry and passed into popular usage as a metonym for the cinema industry. The term silver screen comes from the actual silver (or similarly reflective aluminium) content embedded in the material that made up the screen's highly reflective surface.
