RUMAG made face masks with obscene texts about the 2019-2020 Coronavirus pandemic. After the company received negative feedback on social media, they tweeted to negative commenters to come down with COVID-19 and advised them to lick a crosswalk button.
A couple of days later, they started selling t-shirts again with less controversial texts about the Coronavirus. Profits were said to be donated to the Red Cross. Again, RUMAG received a backlash from the public for profiting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tv-program "Zondag met Lubach" aired an item pointing out that RUMAG was selling the t-shirts at a higher price than their normal shirts and the donation to the Red Cross was extra, on top of the (already higher) price.
RUMAG responded by saying that they did not understand why they were made out to be "black sheep" and countered that they did not profit from the campaign.
The company founder, van der Heide, resigned because of the bad publicity.

RUMAG (which is short for Rude Magazine) was a Dutch media company and apparel brand based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.[1]

History

[edit]

The company was founded in October 2014 by Thijs van der Heide and started out as a blog but later their posts were substituted with quotes and also shared on Facebook.[2][3] The name Rude Magazine was shortened RUMAG and under this name Van der Heide started producing quotes and slogans that are humorous, sexually tinted, and rude.[4] Most of these quotes are not originally produced by RUMAG but taken from various social media outlets or other sources. The RUMAG CEO does not deny this and stated in a televised debate that this practice does not infringe copyright law and that it is a grey zone for the law.[5]

In October 2015, Former nightclub owner Danny Membre and his partner sold their nightclub after which Membre joined RUMAG as a partner and becoming part-owner of the company.[6][7]

In June 2016, RUMAG became a publisher with the VICE Digital Network and launched their own media platform.[8][9] In December 2016, Dutch vlogger and comedian Nienke Plas joined the company.[10][11][12]
