Referring to the linked article the island area is 133,918 acres what makes 209.249 sq mi. It makes the island third largest in contiguous USA. Anybody noticed that? Foxtrot 00:29, 26 November 2006 (UTC) |

⚫ | UPDATE: Okay, now I'm very very confused; Google Maps indicate that opposite Port Mansfield on the mainland there's a channel that divides Padre Island with South Padre Island; however in other places I've seen the two treated as one contiguous island (although there's no way to get from one to the other without going for a swim). Is there a geographer in the house?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.47.123.121 (talk) 02:02, 13 November 2007 (UTC) |

I really believe this is filled with personal opinion and is not appropriate according to Wikipedia's rules. The section makes the beach sound like it is an interstate. This section should address the way the beach is setup. That is, there is the roadway, the place where most people park and then the area where people play in the sand. No more caution is needed in this situation than anywhere children play that is in proximity to a roadway. Does the article on parks have "use extreme caution." It is unnecessary to even mention using caution as this is an article about the island and the beaches, not on proper parenting. I feel it is important to to make note that many of the beaches are allowed to be driven on and are at times loose which may cause your vehicle to be stuck in the sand. Again, the content of this section is akin to having an article about a highway noting "people drive way too fast on this part." Wikipedia is not a blog and should not be cluttered with personal opinion or unnecessary notices to appropriately supervise children.Rastaraqi (talk) 13:29, 30 July 2009 (UTC) |

== Map of Padre Island == |
|||
I’m from the area and I’ve never seen Padre Island divided up like this. I’ve never even heard of “North Padre Island” (except maybe when clarifying to people that you don’t live in the city of South Padre Island, but on the northern end of the Island). |
|||
And in most cases I’ve seen south Padre Island included as part of the whole Island. |
|||
In my college geology class, I remember my professor saying he was of the opinion that man-made channels didn’t divide an island unless there had been a natural divide there already. Not sure how widespread that opinion is, but it makes sense. |
|||
So, the divide between Padre and Mustang Islands at Packery Channel would be dividing two distinct islands because there was originally a pass there called Corpus Christi Pass. However, Port Mansfield Channel cut right through the Island with no preexisting channel or pass there, so south Padre should be considered a part of Padre Island. |
|||
Plus on every map I see around here (and the vast majority I’ve seen online) Padre Island goes from just below Mustang Island to just above Brazos Island. |
|||
Locally it’s just unheard of to divide Padre in to three islands. (What’s the justification for “North Padre” being its own island? They don’t even have the cut off at a waterway, but at the entrance to the National Seashore.) |
|||
Even the Wikipedia page on “Texas Barrier Islands” has a map that shows Padre this way, so Wikipedia doesn’t even agree with itself. 76.186.162.36 (talk) 14:09, 1 September 2022 (UTC) |

I think there's some confusion going on with Padre Island vs. South Padre Island. I added it back to the longest islands list.--12.47.123.121 01:56, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

- The channel is mentioned in the article:
- "Since 1964, the island has been divided by the artificial Port Mansfield Channel, and as a result, "North Padre Island" and "South Padre Island" are often used to refer to the separate portions of the island."
- The channel being unnatural and apparently trying to fill itself in, probably means that from a geographic/geological standpoint, it's still one island. I can't speak in any sort of official or expert capacity though. -- Cyrius|✎ 00:58, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Driving on the Beach
[edit]I really believe this is filled with personal opinion and is not appropriate according to Wikipedia's rules. Again, the content of this section is akin to having an article about a highway noting "people drive way too fast on this part." Wikipedia is not a blog and should not be cluttered with personal opinion or unnecessary notices to appropriately supervise children.Rastaraqi (talk) 13:29, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Map of Padre Island
[edit]I’m from the area and I’ve never seen Padre Island divided up like this. I’ve never even heard of “North Padre Island” (except maybe when clarifying to people that you don’t live in the city of South Padre Island, but on the northern end of the Island).
