Waveform
Actually the first Hip Hop track to use this break was Salt n' Peper's "I Desire" produced by Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor released in 1986. I think this section;
"The first Hip-Hop producer to dismember the drum sounds of the Amen break and reprogram them into a new pattern was Mr. Mixx of 2 Live Crew on their 1987 song "Feel Alright Y'all" from the Move Somethin' album, followed by the Mantronix sample-heavy track "King of the Beats" in 1988."
, needs to be rewitten to accommodate this. <small>—Preceding unsigned comment added by Sureshot2k0 (talk • contribs) 00:33, 28 December 2007 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

"Beginning drummers are often taught it as a first exercise"
:Technically? No doubt about it.
I'm a drum teacher, and I know a fair few others. I've never heard of any of them teaching this groove as a first excercise (and I certainly don't either), the various difficulties inherent in a rhythm like this would be beyond the capabilities of any drummer I'm teaching for the first time. To me it sounds like a throwaway bullshit comment. I'm loathe to remove it from the article myself as I'm not sure of the ins and outs of Wiki editing, but I thought I should definitely flag it for someone else to have a look at!-- <small>—Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.194.31.35 (talk) 12:27, 30 April 2008 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->
:Legally? I wouldn't worry about it. I wonder if there's a distinction between a (sufficiently zoomed-out) waveform and a spectrograph, as you can retrieve the original audio with appreciable resolution from the latter but not the former. ::Appreciate that a waveform showing amplitude over time is not sufficient to reconstruct (or even approximate) the original work, but that's not relevant in this being a derivative work of copyrighted media. Reading WP:DERIVATIVE, my interpretation is that while we may be able to justify the waveform's inclusion under fair use, it's not something that can be released as PD, as the file has been, without the recording itself being PD. I think I'll raise this elsewhere as it's not specific to this article. MIDI (talk) 14:00, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
: Given that the section is about hip hop, perhaps it should read "Beginning hip hop drummers are often taught it as a first exercise.", does anyone actually teach "hip hop drumming"? Do hip hop drummers even use drums? Perhaps they're taught about it, not taught how to drum it. <small>64.231.137.251 (talk) 04:02, 24 July 2008 (UTC)<!--I doesn't know nuttin--></small>

errors in the notation.

measure 3, on 6th ride hit -> only one note is played on bassdrum, here notated with 2 16th notes.

same thing in measure 4, 6 ride hit -> should be only one bassdrum hit, not 2. <small><span class="autosigned">—Preceding unsigned comment added by Golafs (talk • contribs) 02:50, 14 July 2010 (UTC)</span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Can someone with a notation editor please fix? It's one of the most important hits, responsible for genres' worth of influence in modern dance, due to the syncopation it invokes. <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">—Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.73.247.227 (talk) 08:09, 12 October 2010 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Article in the Economist
This week's economist has an article about the Amen Break. See here for the article. It looks as though some of the unsourced statements which are on the WP page can find support here. == Article needs additional citations? ==

The tag at the top of the article says it's been up there since 2007. Even though I don't listen to this kind of music, I learned about the Amen Break from an article in The Economist. So I came here, only to discovered a well-researched, well-documented article. If there are still issues, I think they should be addressed at the lowest reasonable level. I've just added a quote sourced to this BBC article. It's a fairly in-depth treatment of the Amen break, so may well be of use in addressing sourcing issues throughout the article. Hello! As someone who used to make really horrible boom bap instrumentals on FL Studio, I know all too well about this break. I'll get the review done in the coming days (or hours, depends on how much time I have). --Joeyquism (talk) 20:48, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rate Attribute Review Comment
1. Well-written:
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct. Only things I could find:
 • Though "Color Him Father" became a top-10 R&B hit and won a Grammy Award, "Amen Brother", received little notice at the time of release. — Remove the comma after "Amen Brother", and add a comma in between "Amen" and "Brother" (or remove commas from all other instances of "Amen, Brother" for consistency).

 Done 🌙Eclipse (talk) (contribs) 23:53, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

 • [...] and "Keep It Going Now" by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock. — Change the wikilink to use the ampersand instead of the word "and". "Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock" is the name of the group; the ampersand is part of this name.

1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation. Otherwise, no issues with MoS.
2. Verifiable with no original research, as shown by a source spot-check:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline. Looks good.
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose). Since there are so few sources listed, I'm just going to do all of them:
 • [1] Source supports Spencer's leadership of the group and statute of limitations stuff. No copyvio.
 • [2] Source supports nearly everything except the £24,000 claim (the article says "gathered more than £18,000 ($26,000)", so you can use this instead). If there is a different source that states £24,000, use that one instead. If there is none, just say "more than £18,000".

 Done 🌙Eclipse (talk) (contribs) 23:53, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

 • [3] Source supports everything it is used as a citation for. No copyvio — some sentences come kinda close, but they're so short that I can't see any other way to phrase these things without drifting into WP:ELEVAR territory. However, this phrase needs some in-line attribution or paraphrasing because of the quote: In "King of the Beats" by Mantronix (1988), the Amen break is "chopped up, layered and processed so that the drums became central to the track rather than simply a rhythmic bedding".

 Done 🌙Eclipse (talk) (contribs) 23:53, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

 • [4] Source supports Amen break use in Straight Outta Compton and Keep It Going Now. No copyvio.
 • [5] Source supports Amen break use in drum and bass and jungle music. No copyvio.
 • [6] Source supports Amen break use in Futurama theme song. No copyvio.
 • [7] Source supports information on Spencer's death. No copyvio.
2c. it contains no original research. Don't see anything that violates this.
2d. it contains no copyright violations or plagiarism. Copyvio check comes back fine, with the highest similarity score at 27.5% from the BBC (source 2).
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic. Looks good.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style). Stays focused throughout.
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each. Neutral point of view maintained.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute. No edit warring here.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content. All images used are fair use or public domain. Sample of Amen break is both below 10% of the original audio (15.6 seconds) and 30 seconds.
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions. Everything is relevant to the topic, but can the drum notation get a caption? I would assume most people reading about a drum break would have some idea of what it shows, but I can't speak for everyone.

7. Overall assessment. @LunaEclipse: For now, I'm putting this on hold. Some very minor things with prose and references need to be addressed, but otherwise it looks pretty good. • Very good nom here! Love this topic and glad it's gonna be good to go for DYK. Recently passed GA review, so that covers its new enough, presentable, and well-sourced considerations. It is also long enough, and the hook is interesting and well-sourced as well. A lot of ALT hooks can be constructed for this one, but ALT0 is good. Good job on this one Soulbust (talk) 14:35, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
