The family always maintained their British nationality although this was not always easy. Arthur and his brothers James Hamilton and Harold all fought in the British Army in World War I, however, because they had been born in France, the French authorities maintained that they should have served in the French Army. After the war, when the brothers had to pass through France to visit relatives, they travelled on passports which did not list their surnames in order to avoid being prosecuted by the French.
