The Rambling Man had reported at WP:ERRORS that the Jan 24, 1848 was not verifiable in the body by the cited source. Looking at the page's history, it seems like the links to Bancroft's History of California were incorrectly changed to point to Volume XXII instead of XXIII since October 2019. I fixed the links with this edit. I verified that the link in footnote 4 to "Bancroft, Hubert (1888), pp. 32–34" now correctly verifies the text for the Jan 24 date.

There was no "California Genocide." Indians dying from a smallpox epidemic is not a genocide. The vast majority of historians writing about the gold rush do not refer to the California American Indians' deaths and mistreatment as a genocide. Only a tiny, fringe minority of activist scholars do, and it is highly controversial. <!-- Template:Unsigned IP --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.32.84.229 (talk) 22:28, 5 July 2021 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

– Per MOS:CAPS, we should only render titles as proper names if they are consistently capitalized in a significant majority of reliable sources. That is not at all the case for these gold rush articles. See ngram results: - in some cases gold rush has an outright lead, while in others the Gold Rush variant leads but it is close enough that the "significant majority" mark is not met. &nbsp;&mdash;&nbsp;Amakuru (talk) 14:51, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

*Support Gold rush is a descriptive term. Just because it happened at a particular place and this place is used attributively in the noun phrase|name does not ipso facto mean that the whole noun phrase should be capitalised and treated as a proper name. This is a common misperception. It is still a descriptive name (a gold rush that occurred at place X) and therefore intrinsically a common name|noun phrase. This aside, the ngram evidence clearly shows that we should not cap these terms (per WP:NCCAPS and MOS:CAPS) as they are clearly not being capped consistently in sources and do not meet the threshold (not even close) whereby these terms would be capped on Wiki. – Per MOS:CAPS, we should only render titles as proper names if they are consistently capitalized in a significant majority of reliable sources. That is not at all the case for these gold rush articles. See ngram results: [1][2][3][4] - in some cases gold rush has an outright lead, while in others the Gold Rush variant leads but it is close enough that the "significant majority" mark is not met.  — Amakuru (talk) 14:51, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
