Wasn't this more of a Ponzi scheme than a pyramid scheme? Sarke (talk) 04:29, 30 June 2024 (UTC)

:Going by the distinction followed by Wikipedia, probably yes. But I'm quite sure that in the general sense they're commonly regarded as the same thing. --Paul_012 (talk) 13:58, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
::@Paul 012 Yes, but not quite. As far as I know, there's a clear distinction of how new members are acquired. In a pyramid scheme new members are recruited by existing members, creating a hierarchy of sorts. In a Ponzi scheme, funds are also added by new members, but members don't do the recruiting and are unaware that is the source of the funds (as opposed to say legitimate investments). Broadly they fall into the same category, but I wonder if this was referred to as a pyramid scheme simply because this was before Bernie Madoff made Ponzi schemes "famous" again. Chamoy is pretty much notable for only one event. It might be better to have the fraudulent scheme as the article subject. --Paul_012 (talk) 16:51, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ponzi scheme?

Going by the distinction followed by Wikipedia, probably yes. But I'm quite sure that in the general sense they're commonly regarded as the same thing. --Paul_012 (talk) 13:58, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Paul 012 Yes, but not quite.
