Also included in X-Plane is full photographic scenery for North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. This scenery, which is 80% of the Earth, is topographic. Although airports are only shown as their runways and ramps, scenery packages are available on X-Plane's forum. |
<br /> |
X-Plane is also known for being a true simulator, not a game. Not even the sky is the limit; You can fly in outer space and on Mars. |
<br /> |
X-Plane offers four other applications: |
<br /> |
1.Airfoil-Maker: Allows you to fully customize wings, such as on flyable designs of animals |
<br /> |
2.Briefer: Allows you to plan a Flight before-hand |
<br /> |
3.Plane-Maker: Allows you to create your own aircraft, change someone else's, or update aircrafts from older versions |
<br /> |
4.World Maker: allows you to create your own scenery for one place, or create a whole world altogether |
<br /> |
Other applications for X-Plane can be found on the forum. A very popular application is a converter that takes scenery packages from Microsoft Flight Simulator and changes them to X-Plane format. |
<br /> |
X-Plane also has plug-ins, such as XPushBack X, which "draws" a forklift or other truck that pushes you backwards to get onto a ramp. A big one is XSquawkBox, which allows you to fly online with others, where you can practice formations, have a dogfight, or just observe other planes trafficking as in real life. To help make the experience more real, X-Plane will keep track of the real date and time, and will constantly check the internet for weather results, thus real-time weather. There are plenty of servers, ones where you listen to an ATC and have a true experience with real pilots, and other where you fly to have fun. |
<br /> |
X-Plane also comes with a built-in Screenshot command, as well as a video-recorder, however videos do not record the sound, something that has been an issue for awhile, but is bound to be fixed. |
<br /> |
Yet another one of the big things X-Plane is known for is the 3D cockpits. Although not all aircraft have these, it has become a big deal and almost every new plane does. |

== Evenblade image == |
I've replaced the Evenblade image in the article; it was removed by TomXP411 temporarily, and, without trying to second-guess anyone's reasons, not replaced. I feel it's an important image, since creating fictional aircraft is something that can be done only in X-Plane, and this is also why I've displaced the Beluga down: the Evenblade is in the section that discusses the flight model's advantages. Nonetheless, if anyone feels this is a conflict of interest (I created and uploaded the screenshot) feel free to revert. --Scott Wilson 16:51, 9 May 2007 (UTC) |
: I had no problem with the image itself, but the page was getting way too cluttered with screenshots, and it was messing the formatting of the sections. I spent a lot of time re-formatting the article because of those kinds of problesm, and I just couldn't find a spot to re-insert the image where it didn't mess something up. I was also a little concerned about the article becoming a photo gallery and advertisiment for third party XP developers, but that hasn't happened, and the picture DOES look good where you put it. :) -- TomXP411[[User talk:TomXP411|[Talk]]] 01:30, 16 May 2007 (UTC) |

== Remarks == |
It is said that X-Plane is also running on Linux PPC. This is not true, at least today. |
About Universal Binary executables to run on PPC as well as Intel Mac, this is true only from version 8.40. As in Europe the boxed version is 8.21, if you don't know this detail you will be disappointed. |

== Moved External Links list here == |
I've moved all the external links here, except for the official one. The external links section is not a place for community links, its the place for official links. It's okay to put some community ones there, but it soon gets excessive. Rather than argue over which links should be there and which shouldn't - its much better just to have the official ones. |

== Community == |
I see that a user has added a new 'Community' section<br> |
Personally I think that this section is not really needed for a couple of reasons, first it does not add much to the article itself, it has no references, What does it really tell the reader, that there is a forum or two dedicated to X-plane?<br> |
Secondly the links themselves, X-Plane.org is probably the best known forum whereas x-pilot.com is far, far smaller, even the x-plan forum of flightsim.com is bigger, shall we not list that forum rather/as well?<br> |
I was wondering what others though, shall we remove the section altogether?, remove the external links? add other forums? or leave it as it is? FFMG (talk) 14:09, 1 May 2010 (UTC) |

== Version_10 == |
Is this section really needed? While there is no doubt there will be a future version all the details given in the section are fairly vague.<br> |
Version 10 of the X-Plane series is set to go on sale around the first quarter of 2011. It will be one of, if not, the most realistic flight simulator for public use. It should not cost more than a normal video game, $35-$80.<br> |
Those are prety vague, (and maybe even peacock terms), terms. I mean what price range is $35-$80 anyway?<br> |
This looks like WP:OR taken from forum posts, (not sure where the price and take was guessed from), I propose we remove it until we have some more concrete, _referenced_, information. FFMG (talk) 06:58, 27 August 2010 (UTC) |

== Criticisms Section Needed == |
All consumer products, whether for personal use, home use, or professional use, should have a section entitled "Criticisms," "Critical Reviews," or something similar. X-Plane is no exception, and negative feedback forms a vital conduit of information, particularly when the feedback is qualified by an external source, such as a major computer or IT periodical. For example, I have never been able to get even X-Plane 9 to work reliably on my computer despite having a standard Intel/Windows setup (i5, 8GB RAM, 230GB free HD space, Windows 8.1/10, and a fast and well-known graphics card). As for X-Plane 10, forget it. Both are overkill, so overtaxing the system with eye candy that they do not reliably run, even when the display settings are minimized. Meanwhile, FS2004 runs just fine, even using all three screens to display both side views and additional systems (GPS, Radio Stack, Throttle Quadrant). To keep it objective, however, similar comments have been made by various professional reviewers, and their summary comments need a "Criticisms" place to communicate that to Wikipedia's readers.Clepsydrae (talk) 22:48, 5 March 2017 (UTC) |

::Alas, I do not have any such sources on hand. I have seen numerous complaints in a few online flight simulation forums, and have experienced it myself, but that doesn't meet Wikipedia criteria. I was hoping others who are more into flight simulation would have sources from a notable publication.Clepsydrae (talk) 22:59, 9 May 2017 (UTC) |
:::Ok, sorry for necroposting, but the idea that everything needs a "criticisms" section isn't really correct. Products can have a crticisms section if reliable, secondary sources have published significant crticism of it, and not just reviews giving run-of-the-mill criticism like "it's mostly good but my PC couldn't run it on max graphics", or "I found this little feature a bit annoying". For X-Plane, that would require criticism of fundamental aspects, like accuracy, and the quality of the programming itself. Ok, the ability to drop a 737-800 from 999,999ft or the ability to launch and (attempt) to land an A380 on an aircraft carrier in 10m seas might not be realistic situations, but the program does accurately model these scenarios if requested (I.e. if you turn off the "easy" mode bits for overspeed and over-g). == The need to lock parts of the X-Plane main description == |
To quote myself from a comment in the X-Plane main description : |
"I don't know why people keep feeling the need to change the X-Plane description from 'flight simulator' to 'video game'. Once again, X-Plane can be upgraded to log FAA approved flight training hours and to use high-end flight simulation hardware. See https://www.x-plane.com/pro/ . Also, Microsoft Flight Simulator is still classified as a flight simulator on its Wiki page. Once again, this edit borders on vandalism. The "Video Game" description could be changed to "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_simulation_game", but that is cumbersome and confusing, especially when all the other flight simulators, such as MSFS, are classified still as "flight simulators", which would make the description on the X-Plane page inconsistent with other pages on flight simulators. Changing back to "flight simulator", again. This main description needs to be locked by an editor with higher privileges than I have." |
People have been repeatedly changing the main description of X-Plane from "flight simulator" to "video game". So far this has been done by anonymous persons identified by their IP addresses only, and it has happened fairly recently starting a few months ago. I propose that an editor with more privileges than myself lock the relevant parts of the main description. Jdbtwo (talk) 16:59, 26 December 2018 (UTC) |
:Also, I need to mention that changing "flight simulator" to "video game" contradicts the main X-Plane description box and also the content in the Amateur flight simulation, Microsoft Flight Simulator and Flight simulator articles.Jdbtwo (talk) 17:07, 26 December 2018 (UTC) |

== Primary Sources == |
The majority of the page is sourced using primary sources. Any reason why those sections are allowed to continue to be on the page? Why not remove those sections until we can find new sources that independently confirm the claims made in those sections? Hellotrio (talk) 23:10, 3 January 2021 (UTC) |
:Hellotrio |
:The reason those sections can't just be removed is that most of the article would disappear. There is already a template warning readers that the article relies on mostly primary sources. Also, if the aforementioned content were removed, editors who would otherwise be able to add secondary and tertiary sources would no longer be able to as the content would no longer be there. Just because the content relies on mostly primary sources doesn't mean it's invalid and should be removed -- in the case of the X-Plane article, it's just hard to find secondary and tertiary sources. I'm sure someone will come along and add more sources -- I'll see what I can do in that regard when I have the time. Jdbtwo (talk) 18:22, 4 January 2021 (UTC) |

Removal of most of article content
[edit]After the removal of most of the article content by @Woodroar:, this article has effectively been rendered a stub. As such, I've added a Videogame-software-stub stub template to the end of the article source.
Also, I've removed the advertisement template as it only applied to the article before most of its contents were removed. The article, such as it is, still relies too much on primary sources so that template was kept, but, since it's the only issue template attached to the article, I removed the multiple-issues template. - I just downgraded this article’s assessment rating to “Stub class” so it’s consistent with the stub template. Jdbtwo (talk) 01:42, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- My hope is that someone rewrites the article completely based on the suggested secondary sources at the top of the page. I'd be happy to do it myself, if I ever get the time. Woodroar (talk) 16:22, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
