As a key player in the Carey Grammar School's first XVIII, he vice-captained the team to a nine win / one loss season, losing to only Hailebury by nine points under dubious circumstances with the umpires failing to reward a late Richard's goal. The team runner was quoted saying it was "a fucking disgrace" and he felt physically ill when reflecting on the decision. |

Indeed, Ed attributes most of his success to the close bond he made with Carey's runner, Nelson, noting he was taught many invaluable life skills. Nelson has since gone on to commence a double degree in a Bachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Commerce at the prestigious Deakin University. |

The word ‘classy’ regularly comes up in scouting reports on the 18-year-old, mainly on account of his kicking and composure under pressure, but he’s not all polish and no grunt; Richards’ competitiveness is a feature of his game that has impressed recruiters.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2017-11-24/pick-16-halfback-runner-richards-to-kennel}}</ref> |
