Based in Vancouver, Canada, PNI Digital Media was founded in 1995 as PhotoChannel, and went public on April 21st, 1997 .
The company launched in Vancouver, B.C., in 2001, taking on Walmart Canada as their first major photo site client in 2002. From 2003 to 2007, the company also provided its software platform for photo sites for Costco Canada, Blacks, Chapters, Loblaws and others.<ref name=":0" />


PNI then expanded into the US marketplace by licensing its software platform to CVS Health (then CVS/pharmacy), Costco and Sam's Club, the contracts of which were then lost several years later.<ref name=":0" />
PNI’s business model is to provide a technology platform to allow its customers to create, transact and send customized product orders to the retailers’ production facilities. The technology that delivers this end to end service is generically known as the PNI Digital Media Platform.


As of February 2017, PNI also licenses its software platform to retailers such as Staples, Staples Canada, Tesco, FedEx Office and Quill. As of June 6th 2022 PNI's only licenses its software platform to Staples US, and has faced severe downsizing, with most offices across the globe being closed down. <ref name=":0" />
On July 3rd, 2007, PNI Digital Media acquired Pixology, a publicly traded the Company based in the UK. Pixology offered similar services including online photo and digital print kiosk software.

On March 11th, 2009, PNI Digital Media announced the completed acquisition of Works Media Limited, a UK-based software company that provides retailers with kiosk and desktop software to create and order photo products such as photo books, calendars and other photo gift products.

On July 11, 2014 PNI was acquired by Staples, Inc. PNI now operates as a division of Staples and has retained its customers.

Commencing July 14, 2015, the online photo centres for Walmart Canada, CVS, Costco, and Rite Aid, all operated by PNI, were investigating credit card fraud.[8][9][10][11] After being down for several weeks, the photo sites began to be re-launched in September 2015, rebuilt with enhanced security measures.[12]
