The last 5* Match wasn't in the US probably wasn't in 1997 when Joe had two of them in Ring of Honor or did i miss something about those matches? (84.72.64.15 (talk) 02:50, 6 March 2009 (UTC)) |

Well, I did happen to find his MySpace profile that he hasn't done anything with (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=57597954). But it includes a recent photo. Though compared to the original that was posted here, I'd say that Meltzer had a few too many if you know what I mean ;) Raderick 19:24, 23 June 2006 (UTC) |

Yesterday, there was an edit on this page which stated that Dave Meltzer died on July 20, 2010 in a car accident after returning from an MMA event. It was a pretty sick act by whoever did it, because it was done at a time which would be very early morning 20th July in the US, which means Meltzer would probably be sleeping at that time and not attending an MMA event. If he had to attend an MMA event on that night, then there was the whole day left for him to do so, and so he couldn't have died on that day after attending an MMA event unless the event occured at like 2 AM in the morning US time. Whoever did that edit, you really need to get a life. Mayankeagle (talk) 05:42, 21 July 2010 (UTC) |

An editor is persistently changing the section name and adding text to say that Wrestling Observer is now named Mixed Martial Arts Observer, and no longer covers professional wrestling. I can find nothing to support this anywhere on the internet, but I suppose there's a very small chance it might be true? Does anyone know anything about it, or have any citations to support it? ==Meltzer Is Not Exactly A Great Source of Information== |
|||
Going from those lists only: - |

He has earned a reputation as a tabloid journalist. Just last year, he claimed that a CM Punk was expected returning to Raw,http://www.wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2014/0302/571795/cm-punk-expected-to-return-at-monday-raw-in-chicago/ and then earned criticism from this sloppy reporting. He also assumed Kelly Kelly was done with the WWE in the summer of 2003 (sorry 2012), only to find out that she would return shorty after making this claim. Despite his allegation that it was just one special appearance, Kelly Kelly still wrestled in Asia and would not leave the WWE until September of that year. |
|||
Meltzer's frequent habit of trying to find Watergate-like scandals in the wrestling world is not exactly prudent either. You cannot prove that Zane Bresloff was telling the truth when he claimed that Wrestlemania III's actual attendance was 78,000. For all we know, he could have been made it up out of a grudge with the WWE or to pay for his medical expenses.174.20.103.154 (talk) 16:25, 5 February 2015 (UTC) |

|||
:Kelly Kelly would have been 16 years old in 2003 so I'm not sure what you're talking about. Either way, Wikipedia:WikiProject Professional wrestling/Sources advises us to use the Wrestling Observer as a source for historical information and results but not rumors and speculation. No source is correct 100% of the time, speculation has no place in the encyclopedia to begin with so this should not affect us.LM2000 (talk) 02:09, 6 February 2015 (UTC) |

Even in 1995, Meltzer's magazine was publicly chastised by Hogan on the WCW ppv World War 3 for saying that Randy Savage had an arm injury when he in fact didn't. I also meant to type in 2012 as well. 2003 was the year when Meltzer sensationalized the Wrestlemania 3 attendance and I got the dates mixed up. I have fixed the error174.20.103.154 (talk) 15:33, 8 February 2015 (UTC) |

:As I said before, no source is correct 100% of the time. When the US supreme court ruled that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was constitutional, almost every mainstream US media outlet reported that the supreme court had ruled that it was unconstitutional. Such errors happen from time to time regardless of the source, this encyclopedia has a number of articles dedicated to controversies at the BBC, CNN, Fox News, etc. Regardless of their occasional errors, there's a difference between CNN and the National Enquirer and the BBC and the Daily Mail and there's a difference between Dave Meltzer and dirtsheets. We're heading into WP:NOTFORUM territory with this discussion, unless you have a reliable source which describes notable Meltzer controversies which can be incorporated into the article. If you don't think that wikipedia should be using him as a source then you need to start a discussion at WT:PW. We currently use the Observer for results and historical information but not for rumors or speculation, so your concerns about some of his opinions would not be used by us in the first place. This isn't unlike how we use other sources... a number of mainstream sources have reported speculation that Bruce Jenner is transitioning into a woman, we are waiting for solid confirmation before that is reflected in Jenner's article.LM2000 (talk) 21:54, 8 February 2015 (UTC) |

:::Hi, I just made the article about Meltzer on Polish Wikipedia. We have a paragraph about the critisism. I think it would be encyclopedical to add the criticism of wrestling promotors like Jerry Lawler who accused Meltzer of harming wrestling by exposing some secrets and using unreleable sources. This article has too much fan page bias and needs to have the voices of also people who have criticized Meltzer. For example, his claim that Barry Diller wanted to cancel Raw when he was head of the USA Network https://twitter.com/davemeltzerwon/status/945022095028654080 was clearly inaccurate, as Diller, who was even head of the Fox Broadcasting Corporation when Saturday Night's Main Event joined Fox, did in fact invest greatly in keeping Raw as a flagship show on the USA Network, with his staff even being more willing break with censorship.https://www.southcoasttoday.com/article/19980918/News/309189941 2601:447:4000:220:697D:7017:F310:7BD3 (talk) 16:14, 9 February 2022 (UTC) |

:::Agreed. If the reverts of the article are of any note then criticism of Meltzer gets removed from the article due to lack of sources. Meltzer never corrects himself with a retraction. He'll just claim "Plans changed." or deleting what he said as always when things don't go as he said they would in this internet age. In his "heyday" hardly anyone knew who he was unless you sought him out and subscribed to his opinion laced "news" letter so he was able to live in his mostly subjective bubble with little pushback or accountability as there was little to no coverage of pro wrestling except for what the promotion would put out there with Meltzer being one of the few "independent" voices out there at the time. - ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7C:53C1:E00:6013:AD46:3320:E744 (talk) 12:23, 24 February 2024 (UTC) |

== WWE restricting their employees from being guests on WOL == |
|||
I was the one who added the part about the WWE not allowing their wrestlers/employees on Meltzer's WOL show. I noticed somebody added a "citation needed" thing, but unfortunately for this page, I didn't retrieve this info from an online source. However, I'm a regular listener of WOL, and Dave Meltzer mentioned this fact himself. It's reaffirmed by the fact that WWE talent never actually appear on the show, but frequently do appear Live Audio Wrestling. Meltzer does have other wrestlers (from TNA, and other indy feds) as guests quite often. I know this probably won't get the "citation needed" thing removed, but hopefully the info is not deleted. |

But in the next paragraph, "As of September 30, 2007, Bryan Alvarez became the host of Wrestling Observer Live as Meltzer had an increase of workload covering UFC for FOX Sports and couldn't host the show full time anymore. With the change, the radio show will go on during WWE pay-per-views which it had never done before." Which is it? Anyone who knows for sure, please make the change. No 5* Matches in the US since '97?
[edit]The last 5* Match wasn't in the US probably wasn't in 1997 when Joe had two of them in Ring of Honor or did i miss something about those matches? (84.72.64.15 (talk) 02:50, 6 March 2009 (UTC)) This guy also wrestled for the AWA as a jobber and this is why he hates wrestling should it not be noted The Torch is better than the Observer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BruceMitchellFan (talk • contribs) 10:10, 10 July 2009 (UTC) Dave didn't work as a jobber anywhere. Some promoters gave jobbers his name as an inside shot at him. It's ridiculous to say he hates wrestling. There might not be a man on the planet who has watched so much of it and devoted so much time to it.
Death?
[edit]Yesterday, there was an edit on this page which stated that Dave Meltzer died on July 20, 2010 in a car accident after returning from an MMA event. Mayankeagle (talk) 05:42, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- Someone did it again on the June 1, 2011 and I'm not about to click the "Facebook" link cited below. I doubt it's legit but until someone can verify or deny it more officially I won't change it. Talshiarr (talk) 12:53, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
MMA Observer
[edit]An editor is persistently changing the section name and adding text to say that Wrestling Observer is now named Mixed Martial Arts Observer, and no longer covers professional wrestling. I can find nothing to support this anywhere on the internet, but I suppose there's a very small chance it might be true? Does anyone know anything about it, or have any citations to support it? gnfnrf (talk) 17:09, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Meltzer Is Not Exactly A Great Source of Information
[edit]He has earned a reputation as a tabloid journalist. Just last year, he claimed that a CM Punk was expected returning to Raw,http://www.wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2014/0302/571795/cm-punk-expected-to-return-at-monday-raw-in-chicago/ and then earned criticism from this sloppy reporting.[1] He also assumed Kelly Kelly was done with the WWE in the summer of 2003 (sorry 2012), only to find out that she would return shorty after making this claim.[2] Despite his allegation that it was just one special appearance, Kelly Kelly still wrestled in Asia and would not leave the WWE until September of that year.
Meltzer's frequent habit of trying to find Watergate-like scandals in the wrestling world is not exactly prudent either. You cannot prove that Zane Bresloff was telling the truth when he claimed that Wrestlemania III's actual attendance was 78,000. For all we know, he could have been made it up out of a grudge with the WWE or to pay for his medical expenses.174.20.103.154 (talk) 16:25, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
- Kelly Kelly would have been 16 years old in 2003 so I'm not sure what you're talking about. Either way, Wikipedia:WikiProject Professional wrestling/Sources advises us to use the Wrestling Observer as a source for historical information and results but not rumors and speculation. No source is correct 100% of the time, speculation has no place in the encyclopedia to begin with so this should not affect us.LM2000 (talk) 02:09, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Even in 1995, Meltzer's magazine was publicly chastised by Hogan on the WCW ppv World War 3 for saying that Randy Savage had an arm injury when he in fact didn't.[3] I also meant to type in 2012 as well. 2003 was the year when Meltzer sensationalized the Wrestlemania 3 attendance and I got the dates mixed up. I have fixed the error174.20.103.154 (talk) 15:33, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
- As I said before, no source is correct 100% of the time. This isn't unlike how we use other sources... a number of mainstream sources have reported speculation that Bruce Jenner is transitioning into a woman, we are waiting for solid confirmation before that is reflected in Jenner's article.LM2000 (talk) 21:54, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
Split Wrestling Observer Newsletter and Meltzer
[edit]Shouldn't Dave Meltzer's page be split up for the Wrestling Observer Newsletter? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ncam (talk • contribs) 18:58, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- I've wanted to do that for a long while now, I just haven't had the time yet.★Trekker (talk) 19:30, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- I support the split.LM2000 (talk) 20:26, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
Criticism?
[edit]Shouldn't there be a paragraph or two on the abundant criticism of Meltzer and the Observer? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.88.26.6 (talk) 09:51, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- Probably not but maybe if something is mentioned in reliable sources. Also, see WP:CSECTION.LM2000 (talk) 11:15, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
Totally agree that Criticism must be added, Dave Meltzer is not as universally praised as this article makes him. Can we take a Podcast as Resource ? Eric Bischoff and Bruce Prichard constantly call Meltzer a "liar that makes up shit" in their respective Podcasts.
I've tried adding information about the recent Bodyshaming incident but it keeps getting deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maruwe1985a (talk • contribs) 16:36, 17 August 2018 (UTC) If this is the incident discussed above I believe the BBC are a "usually reliable source" https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-45214183 AndyCPrivate (talk) 18:16, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
- Doesn't matter, Wikipedia is not news, we can't write about everything stupid thing a celebrity says even if it gets attention for some reason.★Trekker (talk) 18:18, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
- Or are you just trying to suppress info? 69.84.60.130 (talk) 18:59, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, I just made the article about Meltzer on Polish Wikipedia. We have a paragraph about the critisism. I think it would be encyclopedical to add the criticism of wrestling promotors like Jerry Lawler who accused Meltzer of harming wrestling by exposing some secrets and using unreleable sources. The impact of Meltzer's activity on wrestling buisness is very important in my opinion. --Czarnybog (talk) 18:49, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

Biased
[edit]The page is biased because there are no slight criticisms of Meltzer's continuous system-breaking ratings in recent history. ImmortalWizard(chat) 00:15, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
- Um, okay. Does anyone know what constitutes a biography? Why is everyone trying to use BLP subjects as a venue for writing an article about something else, in this case the WON or the rating system? And how does this activity and behavior jibe with WP:BLP? (These questions and many others will be answered on the next episode of Soap! No, not really...) RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 02:24, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
- Because the rating system is what defines Meltzer nowadays along with his controversial journalism. It's not fair to have all his hard critics on pages like Roman Reigns and an entirely separate page for Persona and reception of Roman Reigns while Meltzer himself gets away with his own problems and controversy. ImmortalWizard(chat) 10:27, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
There Needs to be More NPOV-style Criticism of Meltzer
[edit]This article has too much fan page bias and needs to have the voices of also people who have criticized Meltzer. For example, his claim that Barry Diller wanted to cancel Raw when he was head of the USA Network https://twitter.com/davemeltzerwon/status/945022095028654080 was clearly inaccurate, as Diller, who was even head of the Fox Broadcasting Corporation when Saturday Night's Main Event joined Fox, did in fact invest greatly in keeping Raw as a flagship show on the USA Network, with his staff even being more willing break with censorship.https://www.southcoasttoday.com/article/19980918/News/309189941 2601:447:4000:220:697D:7017:F310:7BD3 (talk) 16:14, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- Agreed. The text needs to mention examples of his errors and bias, too. E.g. the Shibata brain story. 173.45.209.196 (talk) 16:45, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- Shibata did have his brain removed 2601:152:117F:C070:882C:8604:C7C3:C70F (talk) 23:10, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- Agreed. - ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7C:53C1:E00:6013:AD46:3320:E744 (talk) 12:23, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
