The remaining 8 teams compete in the quarter finals, with the match ups being determined by the highest ranked teams. Of the 32 players out of these 8 teams, they play the quarter finals Friday, playing two singles matches and one foursome match. == History == |
=== League === |
October of 2021, the Chief Operating Officer Greg Norman held a private meeting with multiple members of the golf media. He laid out the basis to the new golf league, LIV Golf and it's team play aspect. Later the following year in march the 2022 schedule was announced, stating there would be $5 million awarded each tournament to the top three teams. <ref>{{Cite web |date=2023-06-06 |title=A complete timeline of LIV Golf, leading up to PGA Tour merger |url=https://golfweek.usatoday.com/lists/liv-golf-history-pga-tour-merger/ |access-date=2024-06-04 |website=Golfweek |language=en-US}}</ref> |
=== 2022 season === |
The 2022 season begun with 12 teams. Each team consists or 4 players, one of which is elected captain. Each player also has their own, self-elected, caddy on site for each tournament. There were no reserve players for any teams in the 2022 season. <ref name=":0" /> |

== Expansion == |
As of the 31st of January, 2024, the first ever expansion team to LIV Golf occurred. Legion XIII will be LIV Golfs 13th team, a difference compared to 2022 and 2023 moving away from 12 teams. The team will be lead by former PGA Tour pro and masters champion John Rahm. Accompanying Rahm on the team will be Kieran Vincent, Tyrell Hatton, and Caleb Surratt. <ref>{{Cite web |last=Sim |first=Josh |date=2024-01-31 |title=LIV Golf unveils Jon Rahm’s expansion team Legion XIII |url=https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/liv-golf-jon-rahm-legion-xiii-expansion-team-tyrrell-hatton/ |access-date=2024-06-04 |website=SportsPro |language=en-GB}}</ref> |
== Team ownership == |
Ownership of Liv Golf teams are primarily by the league itself, owning 75% of all the teams. However, when being named captain a 25% equity is given as part of your role. There have been outside buyers interested in buying some teams, such as the Range Goats GC. <ref>{{Cite web |date=2023-10-19 |title=LIV Golf captain claims '10 to 20 people' are interested in buying his team |url=https://golfweek.usatoday.com/2023/10/19/liv-golf-team-franchise-interest-trump-doral/ |access-date=2024-06-04 |website=Golfweek |language=en-US}}</ref> In 2022, the ownership expectations have changed as now the teams are responsible for paying for outside expenses, like hotels and transportation for the players and caddies, while trying to produce their own revenue. $5 million is awarded every tournament to the team that is producing the most revenue, and $50 million at the end of the year, an incentive to build the franchises. Liv Golf and the teams are holding out on selling the franchises as they attempt to prove they are worth more then their current evaluations. |
== Caddies == |
Each player on each team have caddies. Contrary to the PGA Tour, caddies are guaranteed money in liv golf. With the team format there are not cuts after a certain amount of rounds, meaning each player will leave had making money. Hence, each caddy will make money as they take a percentage of their players earnings. Furthermore, the caddies do not pay for travel, housing, or food expenses as that is covered. The first two seasons it was covered by Liv Golf, now it is covered by the team franchises. <ref>{{Cite web |last=Murdock |first=Philip |title=Are LIV tour caddies treated better? |url=https://fhcsportsreport.com/17335/columns/are-liv-tour-caddies-treated-better/ |access-date=2024-06-06 |website=FHC Sports Report}}</ref> |
== Reserve players == |
Within the league of Liv Golf, there are reserve players. In 2024, these players include Wade Ormsby, Ben Campbell, Laurie Canter, and John Catlin. These players travel to each tournament with the chance to fill in for players that are hurt on any team. They are signed to the league and only the league, but teams can pick them up upon injury or withdraws within the team. <ref>{{Cite web |date=2023-02-23 |title=What happens to LIV golfers once they're left off a roster? |url=https://golf.com/news/liv-golfers-left-off-roster/ |access-date=2024-06-06 |website=Golf |language=en-US}}</ref> <ref>{{Cite web |title=Reserve Players {{!}} LIV Golf |url=https://www.livgolf.com/team/false |access-date=2024-06-06 |website=www.livgolf.com |language=en}}</ref> |
