Gomez-Bassols was born in Havana on December 17, 1943 of a Cuban mother; Maria Gomez-Bassols and a Galician born father; Manuel Alvarez. She fled with her mother and brother to Miami, Florida, soon after Fidel Castro gained power in 1959. Her father stayed behind in the hopes that he could save the family business which included a restaurant in the ground floor of the Lopez Serrano Building on Havana's Malecon, which was also their residence. She was never to see her father alive again as he died while traveling to the United States, in Mexico City of heart failure, years later. Her studies at the University of Havana were interrupted and she continued her studies at the University of Miami where she finally graduated.<!-- The whole paragraph including birth date and place, mother's name, father's name, father's death, and her education. --> |
