First surveyed in 1863, Chinderah developed into a centre of agriculture with [[sugarcane]] as a major industry, currently a source of [[rum]]. [[South Sea Islanders]] later arrived and became victims of slavery for the recruitment of [[blackbirding]].
Chinderah is situated in the traditional lands of the [[Bundjalung people|Bundjalung]] peoples.

The town was bisected by the [[Pacific Highway (Australia)|Pacific Highway]] in 1996.
By the 19th century, during British colonial rule, the first [[South Sea Islanders]] arrived in Chinderah. Under the [[Labour law|labour act]], they were forced to work in the fields to harvest [[sugar cane]] as labourers for manual [[sugar industry|industries of sugar]].

Isaiah Rowland surveyed the Chinderah area in 1863, characterizing it as a tributary of the [[Tweed River (New South Wales)|Tweed River]] from Ukerebach Island to Barney's Point, in corroboration to a stretch of sand banks and flowing water.
In 2022, as a result of heavy rainfall, Chinderah was battered by [[2022 eastern Australia floods|floods]] when the [[Tweed River (New South Wales)|Tweed River]] broke its banks at a recorded peak.
