This route dates back to the beginning of the 20th century when it ran between [[Peckham]] and [[Isleworth]]. By 1981, serious disruptions to the service caused by ever increasing congestion and other operating difficulties resulted in the splitting of the route into two overlapping sections, Peckham to Putney or Richmond and Clapham to Hounslow. It was run by the old [[Routemaster]] buses mainly the RML, 72 seat variant. In 1991 the route was withdrawn west of Putney. The new route [[London Buses route 337|337]] covered the section from Clapham Junction to Richmond and the new midibus route [[London Buses route H37|H37]] covered Richmond to Hounslow.


Route 37 was selected by Transport for London to be the trial route for the operation of two [[Wright SRM]] double-deckers on [[Volvo B5LHC]] [[hybrid electric bus|hybrid electric]] chassis in 2018. History

Five AEC Regent I double-decker buses with open tops were ordered by Charles Pickup for route 37 on weekdays in 1932, now running between Peckham and Richmond.[1] It was later extended to Hounslow, and during World War I was operated with naptha powered vehicles.[2]

In April 1997, the route gained a night bus variant, route N37. It was the 50th night bus route to begin operation in London.[3] This route was withdrawn when the 37 became a 24-hour service in April 2004.[4]

Route 37 was selected by Transport for London to be the trial route for the operation of two Wright SRM double-deckers on Volvo B5LHC hybrid electric chassis in 2018.
