The passage of time has transformed the small town of Patuakhali, giving it a new look through changes and expansions. At the heart of Patuakhali district, renowned for the Kuakata sea beach in southern Bangladesh, stands the historic and grand Patuakhali Government Jubilee High School. |
|||
===Origins=== |
|||
This school is the first high school and building in Patuakhali town. The work of Patuakhali sub-division began in 1871. The first magistrate with judicial powers in Patuakhali was the late Brajamohan Dutta, marking the beginning of a renaissance. This renaissance was nurtured by Ashwini Kumar Dutta, Congress leader Satin Sen’s father Nabin Chandra Sen, leader Harilal Das Gupta’s father Umesh Chandra Das Gupta, and lawyers and intellectuals from Dhaka and Barisal as well as locals. The school started its journey on the private land of Akshay Kumar De (near the current district post office) with a house made of golpata (a type of palm leaf). Initially, the school was named “Patuakhali Entrance School” under the headmastership of the honorary magistrate Ras Ranjan Pal. |
|||
In 1876, Axmoy Kumar Dey donated land for a school near the present district post office. At that time the present school location was farmland. In 1884, Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Foyz Uddin Hossen allotted property for a more permanent structure, and constructed an eight-room, single storied building there. The current hostel and eastern playground of the school were once agricultural land. In 1884, the then S.D.O. Faiz Uddin Hossain leased the land from the owner and constructed a one-story building with eight rooms using government grants and locally collected donations. |

In 1887, on the occasion of the “Golden Jubilee” (50th anniversary) of Queen Victoria’s reign, the school was moved from the old golpata house to the newly constructed building and was renamed “Patuakhali Jubilee High English School” in commemoration of the jubilee festival. |
|||
In 1912, the then government acquired 15 bighas of land adjacent to the school for the purpose of nationalization and handed it over to the education department. Fearing a loss of reputation, the executive committee refused to hand over the school to government management. Instead, they took a permanent lease of the land in the school’s name for an annual rent of one taka and expanded the building. The school’s reputation quickly spread, and in 1917, it received permanent approval from Calcutta University. At that time, the headmaster was Bardakanta Sen. In 1961, the school received approval from the Dhaka Board to introduce a science department. In the 1962-63 academic year, the school was brought under the “Multi-Lateral Scheme” and underwent multifaceted development. On November 15, 1968, the school was nationalized and renamed “Patuakhali Government Jubilee High School. ” In 2012, the school celebrated its 125th anniversary with a grand event attended by numerous current and former students and teachers. <ref>https://www.thedailystar.net/news-detail-264703</ref> |

History
[edit]Origins
[edit]In 1876, Axmoy Kumar Dey donated land for a school near the present district post office. There was established Patuakhali Entrance School,[4] for students up to class eight.[3]
At that time the present school location was farmland. In 1884, Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Foyz Uddin Hossen allotted property for a more permanent structure, and constructed an eight-room, single storied building there. Instruction shifted to the new building on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887, and the school took the name Patuakhali Jubilee High English School in remembrance of the event.[4]
In 1912, the Indian government put the school under the authority of the Education Department. Calcutta University, which regulated and controlled secondary education in Bengal, recognized the school in 1917.[4]
Nationalization
[edit]In 1952, the school enlisted in the Uplift Scheme. In 1962, it participated in the Multilateral Scheme.[4] It took its current name when it was nationalized on 15 November 1968.[3]
Present day
[edit]In January 2013, the school observed its 125th anniversary. Former alumni have held important positions in Bangladesh, including Minister Shahjahan Mia, Justice Mohammed Nizamul Huq and Additional Deputy Attorney General MK Rahman.[3]
