The Lightning Regiment Marching Band, known for its performance excellence from 1990-2008, again reached this level of success by receiving a Superior Rating{{Citation needed|date=March 2012}} in the 2011-2012 school year for the first time under its new director. Named for the Civil War Battle of Chancellorsville, which was fought just west of the school location, Chancellor High School also has the honor of being a Plank Owner of the USS Chancellorsville. The name Chancellor derives from the family of George Chancellor who operated the Chancellorsville Inn, a Union staging point and center of combat during the Battle of Chancellorsville.

Still a member of the Battlefield District, Chancellor currently competes within Conference 22 of the VHSL Group 4B North Region.
