During WW I Goodyear built three small blimps and offered them to the US government. Two were purchased for the US Navy and one for the US Army. The Navy blimps were designated E-1, F-1, and the Army airship A-1. These airships had identical cars and envelopes. The envelopes were 162 feet long, 33 feet in diameter, and had a volume of 95,000 cubic feet. The overall height of the E-1 was 49.5 feet, it's useful lift was 2,050 pounds. E-1 had a top speed of 56 mph, cruised at 35 mph and had a cruising endurance of 19.2 hours during which it could cover 602 miles in still air. The E-1 appears to have been powered by a 145 hp Thomas Morse V-8 engine driving a four-bladed prop.

The E class of US Navy blimps comprised a single airship, built during World War I by Goodyear as one of a group of three small blimps offered to the US government. Two were purchased for the US Navy and one for the US Army. The Navy blimps were designated E-1, F-1, and the Army airship A-1. These airships had identical envelopes but different cars.[1] The E-1 was delivered to Pensacola, Florida in December 1918. It was flown only at Pensacola serving as a trainer at the Airship School. A new envelope was provided in December 1920.[1] E-1 was retired from service sometime in 1924.
