Early history
History
Alton Town
Alton Town Football Club was established in 1947. The club joined Division Three East of the Hampshire League and won the division in their first season, earning promotion to Division Two. They were Division Two champions the following season, as well as winning the Hampshire Intermediate Cup and the Russell Cotes Cup, resulting in promotion to Division One. The 1950–51 season saw them finish as runners-up in Division One. Although they were relegated at the end of the 1953–54 season, the club were Division Two champions the following season, earning an immediate promotion back to Division One. They were Division One runners-up in 1956–57 and league champions in 1957–58.

Alton were Division One runners-up again in 1962–63. In 1972–73 the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 5–1 at Fourth Division Newport County. At the end of the season they left the Hampshire League to join Division Two of the Athenian League. After winning Division Two at the first attempt, there were promoted to Division One. The league was reduced to a single division in 1977, and after finishing bottom of the league in 1980–81, the club switched to the expanded Combined Counties League, where they were placed in the Western Division. They were Western Division runners-up in 1981–82 and the following season the league reverted to a single division.
Bass (Alton) F.C.
Originally known as Courage & Co, this works football club based in Alton, Hampshire enjoyed a long and distinguished history before joining forces with neighbours Alton Town in 1991.

After finishing second-from-bottom of the Combined Counties League in 1983–84, Alton dropped into Division Three of the Hampshire League. They finished bottom of the division for the next two seasons, but after it was disbanded in 1986 they were moved up to Division Two. They went on to win the Division Two title in 1986–87 and were promoted to Division One. In 1989–90 they were Division One runners-up.
'The Brewers' originally joined the Hampshire League in 1928 and were Division 2 champions in 1929–30. Courages remained a steady top-flight side until being relegated in 1937–38 as the bottom side.

Season-by-season
Once normal football had resumed after World War II, Courages played in the Aldershot League apart from during the 1954–55 season, when they rejoined the Hampshire League to play in the short-lived North Hants Division.
{| class="wikitable collapsible collapsed" style=text-align:center

After a successful period Courages returned to the Hampshire League in 1972, when they were placed in Division 4. Promotion was achieved in 1974–75 but two years later the team were back in the basement division.

In 1979 the club was renamed Bass (Alton) and after some tough seasons were moved back up to Division 3 a year later when the league was reduced to three divisions. This seemed to ignite the club's fortunes as they won two successive promotions to reach Division 1 for the 1983–84 campaign. Bass (Alton) did well to survive in what was at the time a very tough division before the 1986 formation of the Wessex League, which many of the league's top clubs left to join.

Bass (Alton) stayed in the Hampshire League and remained a solid mid-table side but by the early Nineties were finding the going tough. After relegation in 1990–91 the club decided to merge with local league rivals Alton Town and became known as Alton Town Bass with the town still having two county league sides as the Reserves were given a place in the newly reformed Division 3 (later being placed in the Combination Division). The Reserves also won the 2012/2013 Aldershot Intermediate Cup Final 3-2 against Old Farnboronians at the EBB Stadium.

In the 2013/2014 season, Alton Town Reserves came 2nd in the Wyvern League to local rivals Alresford Town. The newly created Under 21's side managed by Robbie Clayton came 1st in the Aldershot District Under 21's League and also were crowned champions in the Aldershot District League Cup with a 6-2 win over Badshot Lea. On 11 May Alton Town U21's became champions of Hampshire after beating Horndean United 2-1 AET in the Final. Alton's Youth set up were also crowned champions of the Allied Counties League. Alton Towns 1st team were relegated from the Combined Counties League in the same season.

In 1992 the club became known as Bass Alton Town and continued played at the Bass Sports ground, where they made further steady progress. In 1998 the club became known simply as Alton Town and after twice winning the Hampshire League title they took their place in the Wessex League in 2002, where they remained until being switched to the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League for the start of the 2013/2014 season. This enforced exile from their traditional league, which the club were never happy with and had initially complained vociferously against, lasted only two years and for the start of the 2015/16 season were back in the Wessex League (Division One). They had struggled to make an impact in the Combined Counties which is a stronger league, football wise, with a number of big Surrey and London-based clubs.

In March 2016 the club announced that they would be renamed Alton Football Club from the start of the 2016/2017 season.

Merged club
In 1991 Alton Town merged with fellow Hampshire League Division One club Bass (Alton). The new club was initially known as Alton Town Bass, before becoming Bass Alton Town the following season. In 1998 they were renamed Alton Town, and were Division One champions in 1998–99. Division One was renamed the Premier Division at the end of the season and Alton were Premier Division champions in 2001–02, earning promotion to the Wessex League. When the league gained a second division in 2004 they were placed in Division One, which was renamed the Premier Division in 2006.

Alton were transferred to the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League in 2013, but finished in the relegation zone in their first season in the division, resulting in relegation to Division One. In 2015 they were transferred back to the Wessex League, rejoining Division One. They were renamed Alton Football Club in 2016, when they absorbed Alton United Youth. Alton Football Club is a football club based in Alton, Hampshire, England. Formed by a merger of Alton Town and Bass (Alton) in 1991, they are currently members of the Combined Counties League Premier Division South and play at Anstey Park.

History

[edit]

Alton Town

[edit]

Alton Town Football Club was established in 1947.[2] The club joined Division Three East of the Hampshire League and won the division in their first season, earning promotion to Division Two.[3] They were Division Two champions the following season, as well as winning the Hampshire Intermediate Cup and the Russell Cotes Cup,[3] resulting in promotion to Division One.[4] The 1950–51 season saw them finish as runners-up in Division One.[4] Although they were relegated at the end of the 1953–54 season, the club were Division Two champions the following season, earning an immediate promotion back to Division One.[4] They were Division One runners-up in 1956–57 and league champions in 1957–58.

Alton were Division One runners-up again in 1962–63.[5] In 1972–73 the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 5–1 at Fourth Division Newport County. At the end of the season they left the Hampshire League to join Division Two of the Athenian League. After winning Division Two at the first attempt, there were promoted to Division One.[6] The league was reduced to a single division in 1977, and after finishing bottom of the league in 1980–81, the club switched to the expanded Combined Counties League, where they were placed in the Western Division. They were Western Division runners-up in 1981–82 and the following season the league reverted to a single division.[6]

In 1989–90 they were Division One runners-up.[6]

Season-by-season

[edit]

Merged club

[edit]

In 1991 Alton Town merged with fellow Hampshire League Division One club Bass (Alton). The new club was initially known as Alton Town Bass, before becoming Bass Alton Town the following season.[7] In 1998 they were renamed Alton Town,[6] and were Division One champions in 1998–99. Division One was renamed the Premier Division at the end of the season and Alton were Premier Division champions in 2001–02, earning promotion to the Wessex League. When the league gained a second division in 2004 they were placed in Division One, which was renamed the Premier Division in 2006.[6]

Alton were transferred to the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League in 2013, but finished in the relegation zone in their first season in the division, resulting in relegation to Division One.[6] In 2015 they were transferred back to the Wessex League, rejoining Division One.[6] They were renamed Alton Football Club in 2016,[8] when they absorbed Alton United Youth. In 2021 the club were promoted to the Premier Division based on their results in the abandoned 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons. At the end of the 2021–22 season, they were transferred to the Premier Division South of the Combined Counties League.

Ground

[edit]

The club play at Anstey Park, which was the home ground of the original Alton Town club.[9] The merged club played at the Bass Ground before moving to Anstey Park in 2015 as its owners, Coors Brewers, sought to use the site for redevelopment.[10] Coors funded a refurbishment of the Anstey Road ground, which included a new grandstand (replacing an older one), new floodlights and an artificial pitch.[9][10] A new covered stand was opened in 2017, replacing one that had been removed during the redevelopment work.[9]
