He is Senior Advocate of Supreme Court of India and Calcutta High Court. He is a four-time Member of Parliament. He has won the 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024 Indian general elections from Serampore (Lok Sabha constituency).[1]

He was earlier elected for the 16th Lok Sabha from the same constituency.[2]
