The cave is lit by sunlight which filters through holes in the ceiling. The underground lake is a popular swimming spot, but it has been known to test for high levels of various pollutants, since it is fed by ground runoff.
Hinagdanan Cave is a place for nature trekking and for a cool dip. Located in Bingag, [[Dauis]] (Panglao Island), [[Bohol]] this naturally lighted cavern with its deep lagoon and magnificent stalactites and stalagmites formation, boasts of yet another mesmerizing spot nature could offer.


Hinagdanan Cave is made of limestone. Its entrance is a hole about 1 metre in diameter, visible from a limestone hill. Cement steps lead to the interior. The cave is slippery, but there's a rope railing to hold on to. The cave is filled with sleeping birds in small holes in the ceiling. The sunlight that enters the cave make it unsuitable for bats.
Hinagdanan Cave is located in the most important karst area of the Philippines, the [[Chocolate Hills]]. The cave is a huge cavern with several holes in the ceiling and a large cave lake. The cool water of the lake is a popular bathing spot on a hot day, so this is one of very few spots were you take your bathing suit to a cave visit.


Hinagdanan Cave was accidentally discovered when the area's owner was clearing decaying branches. He threw a stone into the hole and heard a splash. After building a ladder to enter the cave, he named it Hinagdanan ("laddered").
However, although this is very popular to locals, we must add a warning word. Some time ago there was a rumour about the water being not clean enough. There is a general danger for foreigners in tropic countries, when bathing in sweetwater. And although it is far below ground, the water comes directly from the surface. Karst water is very sensitive to any kind of water pollution outside.


The cave is about 100 metres long, with many beautiful stalagmite and stalactite rock formations. There is a lagoon with a green hue produced by the green limestone at its bottom. People used to bathe there, but it is no longer advised due to karst pollutants in the water.
Ceilings dripping with stalactites, Hinagdanan Cave is a marvel in stonework. Its underground pools with their limestone bottoms glimmer clear and green, and are lit up dramatically by natural skylights that enters from two holes at the cave's roof creating an eerie and remarkably beautiful natural effect. It is situated two and a half kilometers from the Dauis town proper.
