RVCA was conceived and founded by designer P.M. Tenore. The brand was officially launched with the later involvment of surfer Conan Hayes in 2000. Ed Templeton was the first artist to contribute graphics to the company.
The logotype for RVCA portrays the letter A without a crossbar, resembling an uppercase [[lambda]] (Λ). The name resembles the Greek ''ρούχα'' (uppercase: ''ΡΟὙΧΑ''), pronounced {{IPA-all|ˈru xa|}}, which means 'clothes' in English. RVCA is in fact Ruca (pronounced "rue-cuh"); the 'V' looking character is a 'U'. The 'U' is written in traditional Roman script, and thus appears as a 'V'. RVCA is sometimes pronounced "err-vick-uh", both purposely and ignorantly, due to this convention. "Ruca" can be translated as "clothing" in Greek, and it is believed the 'V' as 'U' convention arises from this Greco-Roman connection.

RVCA was founded in 1999 by Pat Tenore and Conan Hayes, a professional surfer from Hawaii.[2][3][4] Billabong purchased RVCA in July 2010,[5] and then Boardriders acquired Billabong in 2018, taking ownership of RVCA, Element, Von Zipper, and XCEL.[6]

RVCA is closely associated with skateboard, surf culture, Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ), and MMA. The company sponsors a skateboard and surf team. They also sponsor prominent BJJ competitors and prominent MMA fighters. RVCA clothing is found in skateboard/surf shops and numerous other shops.
