History
[edit]Sigma Alpha Lambda was founded in 2001 at the University of Arizona. It is a leadership and honor society that seeks to recognize academic achievement, develop its member's leadership skills, and encourage members to participate in service activities.[1][2][3]
It was recognized as a nonprofit corporation in 2004.[2] As of 2024, the honor society has more than 65 chapters and 145,000 initiates.[4] Its headquarters are in Burlington, Massachusetts.[5]
Symbols
[edit]The society's colors are navy, black, and gold.[6] Graduating members may wear honor cords consisting of the three Sigma Alpha Lambda colors, a blue and gold tassel, or a navy blue stole.[6][7]
Membership
[edit]Membership in Sigma Alpha Lambda by invitation.[8] It is open to all undergraduate students who meet the national requirements of sophomore classification or higher with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Membership is also open to graduate students who meet the GPA requirement for undergraduates.
Activities
[edit]Sigma Alpha Lambda offers its members annual scholarships and awards ranging from $100 up to $5,000.[4]
Each year, the Sigma Alpha Lambda chapter participates in two national initiatives that are coordinated by the national office.[4]
Food Fight Against Hunger
[edit]Each fall, the students work together to fight hunger with SAL's Food Fight against Hunger.[9][10] Since 2010, Sigma Alpha Lambda members have collected over 130,000 food items and raise nearly $45,000 for local food banks.[9]
Relay for Life
[edit]In the Spring, the main focus is Relay for Life. Sigma Alpha Lambda is a National Youth Affiliate of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.[9][10] Each spring, SAL chapters participate in their local Relay for Life and collect donations on behalf of their team.[9][11][12] In the 2018-2019 school year, Sigma Alpha Lambda members raised over $10,000 for Relay for Life.[13]
Chapters
[edit]Sigma Alpha Lambda has chapters at universities in the United States.[14][15]
