Paper Mario: Color Splash is a 2016 video game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Wii U console. It is the fifth game in the Paper Mario series. The story follows Mario and a paint bucket named Huey as they work to save Prisma Island and rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. The game world is made up of crafting materials. Along the way, Mario and Huey encounter places that lack color, and Mario must fill them in with his paint hammer. The developers focused on color-themed puzzles and comedy, and implemented card-based combat to use the gamepad's touchscreen to sort, paint, and flick cards.<!-- added sentence to conform with character limit, using wording similar to that found in article lead --> Color Splash was initially criticized for its focus on turn-based action-adventure elements, continuing the trend started by its predecessor to move the series away from its role-playing game <!-- removed unused acronym --> roots. However, it received generally positive reviews upon release, gaining praise for its writing, graphics, and gameplay elements. Paper Mario: Color Splash

Paper Mario: The Origami King is a cross-genre video game, developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo; it was released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch console in July 2020. The story follows Mario teaming up with his new ally Olivia to prevent the Mushroom Kingdom from being folded entirely into origami. The game is designed to look entirely like paper, with multiple open-world areas allowing for exploration and puzzle-solving. Turn-based combat is organized into circular rings, which can be rotated to line up enemies to deal more damage. The producer, Kensuke Tanabe (pictured), anticipating that he could not satisfy every fan, opted for entirely new gameplay and concepts compared to previous games in the series. The game received generally positive reviews, being praised for its graphics, writing and characters, and critiqued for the lack of other elements of role-playing games, such as experience points. Reception on gameplay, mainly the puzzle-style combat, was mixed. (Full article...)

Paper Mario

Paper Mario is a video game spinoff series of the Mario franchise, developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for its various video game consoles. The series began when Square took its Final Fantasy franchise to Sony's PlayStation console, leaving Nintendo without a role-playing game (RPG) for the Nintendo 64. The series follows Mario on various quests to defeat one or more antagonists (including Bowser) in worlds created with papercraft materials. The first game in the series, Paper Mario, was released in August 2000. The series has received praise for its writing, characters, and graphics, but garnered criticism for its transition from traditional role-playing to action-adventure, starting with Super Paper Mario for the Wii. The newest game in the series, The Origami King, was released on July 17, 2020. (Full article...)

Paper Mario: Color Splash

Paper Mario: Color Splash is a 2016 video game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Wii U console. It is the fifth game in the Paper Mario series. The story follows Mario and a paint bucket named Huey as they work to save Prisma Island and rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. The game world is made up of crafting materials. Along the way, Mario and Huey encounter places that lack color, and Mario must fill them in with his paint hammer. The developers focused on color-themed puzzles and comedy, and implemented card-based combat to use the gamepad's touchscreen to sort, paint, and flick cards. Color Splash was initially criticized for its focus on turn-based action-adventure elements, continuing the trend started by its predecessor to move the series away from its role-playing game roots. However, it received generally positive reviews upon release, gaining praise for its writing, graphics, and gameplay elements. (Full article...)

The Mario franchise has deviated into a variety of role-playing games that have been published by Nintendo and released exclusively for their video game consoles. The first game, Super Mario RPG, was developed by Square and released in 1996; the game was met with critical acclaim, and became the inspiration for the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi spinoff series, developed by Intelligent Systems and AlphaDream respectively. The Paper Mario series was well-received when it began with Paper Mario in 2000, but has since been shifted to that of an action-adventure series; beginning with Superstar Saga in 2003, numerous titles in the Mario & Luigi series were met with critical acclaim, but AlphaDream declared bankruptcy in 2019. Three other one-off titles, such as Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle in 2017, have also been released. (Full list...)
