:::::If the lead image size was set correctly in the first place, no more than 300px, then changing it to upright=1.35 will be unnoticeable by everyone using default parameters. For the small numbers of users whose default images are small at 180px, or are large at 300px, the change to a ratio of their default image is an improvement. We have no idea what their display looks like, but we do know that they've told us what they think looks good, 180, or 300, or whatever. Following a ratio of that rather than hard coding is clearly better.<P>I know it's been discussed on a great many occasions, and I don't see a need to get even more approval; unforcing image sizes already has broad consensus. --[[User:Dennis Bratland|Dennis Bratland]] ([[User talk:Dennis Bratland|talk]]) 15:45, 29 July 2012 (UTC) |

:::You're welcome. Whitfield Hall, the last possible starting point for the hike to Peak. I went there once on a hike to Peak in December 1996 (the alternative was January, so I went in December). Unless I'm mistaken, it's not accessible with an ordinary road car like mine, so there goes that idea. [[File:Information.svg|25px|alt=Information icon]] Hello, I'm [[User:Trident13|Trident13]]. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of [[Special:Contributions/SamBlob|your recent contributions]] to [[:Coupe de Ville]] because it did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the [[WP:sandbox|sandbox]]. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on [[User_talk:Trident13|my talk page]]. Thanks!<!-- Template:uw-vandalism1 --> Namely [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Coupe_de_Ville&diff=611991544&oldid=611957164]. Ridiculous for an experienced editor to provide such a covering of your true intentions edit summary. Take it to the talk page if you have a problem. Rgds, --[[User:Trident13|Trident13]] ([[User talk:Trident13|talk]]) 11:00, 8 June 2014 (UTC) |

:Not nearly as ridiculous as the edits you made. Not only is the formatting horrible, the text of much of what was written bears no relation to the source material cited to support them. I was trying to sort this all out, but after an hour I could not be arsed any longer and so I binned the lot. As you seem to be an experienced editor, I fully expected an apology that a twelve-year old relative had got on to your computer while you were logged on, but, amazingly, you seem to be the actual author of this travesty. I am therefore forced to do what I had tried to do earlier, which is go through it piece by piece and remove the [[Bullshit|male bovine eliminatory product (MBEP)]] where I see it. [[User:SamBlob|Sincerely, SamBlob]] ([[User talk:SamBlob#top|talk]]) 11:54, 8 June 2014 (UTC) |
|||
::Can I ask that, before you get yourself into any more trouble, that you go and read [[WP:AGF]]? The summary of your previous edit and edit summary was as you know ridiculous. You also choose to remove the term as French language origin, which is wholly factually incorrect. Rgds, --[[User:Trident13|Trident13]] ([[User talk:Trident13|talk]]) 14:08, 8 June 2014 (UTC) |
|||
:::From [[WP:AGF]]: "This guideline does not require that editors continue to assume good faith in the presence of obvious evidence to the contrary..." The citing sources that do not support the text being cited is obvious evidence to the contrary. Evidence of dishonesty is good enough reason to stop assuming good faith. ::As a Brit (much as though I spent 20 years working in North America), I haven't got a clue what a Town Car is above a Lincoln model. If you ask me to define an open front topped/enclosed rear car then I'd call it a Sedanca de Ville, as (a) I own one, and (b) the UK dealer chap who I bought it from described it as such, as that's what the Rolls Royce/HJ Mulliner build sheet described it as such. I also accept that if I went to France and Germany, they would define it as a Coupe de Ville, which would have a very different interpretation in North America (hence why I added a North America section in the rewrite). You might also like to go and read both the German and French versions of Coupe de Ville (Google translations available if don't read German or French) as their versions conform to the same flow, hence why I wrote it as such. I personally don't think that if there are major reference sources that clash we should be worried as an encyclopaedia to provide reader guidance around the wording - the article before I started my rewrite didn't even define the term as French language in origin! I think that there is a lot more to go on the article, but the opportunity here is in (1) the definition of what the word means and then (2) how then each area of the world interprets it. Rgds, --[[User:Trident13|Trident13]] ([[User talk:Trident13|talk]]) 14:08, 8 June 2014 (UTC) |
|||
:::I am quite certain that the "Rolls Royce/HJ Mulliner build sheet" also described the respective entities as "Rolls-Royce" and "H. J. Mulliner" respectively. |
|||
:::I have been to the German Wikipedia article and I noticed something interesting: They actually cited their sources for this one! (They often don't.) Most of the citations are to [http://www.coachbuilt.com/ter/terminology.htm Coach Building Terminology] at Coachbuilt.com ...an American website. Who's Yankifying Wikipedia, then? Don't talk to me of misuse of edit summmaries when you use yours to make anti-American statements instead of identifying your source as a translation of German Wikipedia. |
|||
:::In German, as in English, a Wikipedia article is only as good as its sources. Sources = Credibility, and the converse is also true: No Sources = No Credibility. You had access to all their sources and you named only one of them (without giving a link) and put existing ones that didn't support the text instead. Are you usually this careful? How many articles have you edited over the years? We're going to need a bigger broom! |

:Not really; AISK is at the end of a long dead-end road and, while I don't think it's illegal to photograph anything visible from the road, Amercans tend to be paranoid about their children and I just might get picked up by the CIA. NCB Towers is just an office building and has no big sign on it about being the headquarters of the Ministry and I have no legitimate reason to enter the building. The Department of Correctional Services is in the court house downtown and neither the police, the defendants, nor the families and friends of the defendants want anyone taking pictures around there. :May I offer this alternative: There are several Jamaican high schools with Wikipedia articles with no photos in them. I suggest that you prepare a [[Boilerplate (text)|boilerplate]] letter to the school principals asking them for photographs of the school that are adequately licensed for use in Wikipedia. I further suggest that you suggest to them that this might be a good activity for the school's photography club if it has one. The contact info for each school should be available at their website. |
|||
:While the above approach might not work, the result if it does is highly likely to be better than a few snap shots taken from outside the school by someone the faculty or the police might suspect of being a burglar or worse. |

My name is ????? and I am a volunteer for Wikipedia. I came across the article about your school, <nowiki>[[</nowiki>??????<nowiki>]]</nowiki>, and I notice there are currently no photos of the institution in the article. I am very much interested to know if you are interested in donating some images of your school, including the front entrance/entrance gate with signage shown, to help illustrate the article. Please see the licensing terms at: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Licensing - Users need to be able to freely distribute the said pictures according to Creative Commons and/or GNU licenses. If you have any further questions about licensing feel free to contact me. |

You are welcome to involve your students in this activity. If there is a photography club they may be very happy to show the world your school's appearance, culture and history. |

Thank you very much for giving this your consideration. |

How is this for a start? (It may be a good boilerplate for schools in countries where photography is seen as very suspicious, especially in parts of the Middle East and Africa) |

:Sounds good. Jamaicans are very suspicious about photography. We're also not that careful about copyright ownership, so you might want to make sure they know that the photographer has to agree to the required licence. That might be difficult, especially the part about anyone being able to use the photo for commercial purposes. Altruism isn't that strong here; we want money for everything. Stop moving the page
Stop moving the page Sam.
Yes, it was not the right way to do so but it was the only way I knew how.
It creates too many problems with shortcuts and duplicate talk pages if you do what you have just done.
Please address the question on the discussion page
Let's sort out which title is best, and then ask an admin to sort it out if required.
I think you will find consensus is parallel twin --Bridge Boy (talk) 01:32, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
- You're right. I should not move the page back. You should. You created the problems, you should solve them.
- You now know all the hard work I went through to try and put your impetuous move right. It's your turn.
- I will reply later, when I am not quite so bloody furious; right now, anything I would say there would violate WP:CIVIL
- I appreciate you might know tonnes about Wikipedia, but do you know anything about engines?
- Given how influential the Wikipedia is, I guess I put common sense and accuracy above arcane policies that no newcomer could possibly be expected to know.
- It would have been more economical of effort just to fixed it properly, or raise the issue without someone who could rather than expect me to.
- It is just not logical to revert it to being wrong, --Bridge Boy (talk) 06:43, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding Violation of WP:OWN, WP:AGF and WP:CIVIL. The thread is Bridge Boy.The discussion is about the topic Straight-two engine. Thank you. —Dennis Bratland (talk) 16:09, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
Nomination of Inline-twin engine for deletion
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Inline-twin engine is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Inline-twin engine until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Dennis Bratland (talk) 14:16, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
Square engine
I notice here, back in 2007, you used "straight two" for your re-working of Square engine (which I basically agree with).
It is unreferenced, so what was your reasoning or what were your influences for doing so? Were they external to the Wikipedia or just from the Wikipedia itself?
Thank you. --Bridge Boy (talk) 10:23, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- That was the name of the article. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 10:47, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

In relation to the 8 Litre Bentley "specials" modified by McKenzie. I have a source for you now that is in print "Bentley 8 Litre by Clare Hay"
Clare is a Bentley specialist and covers the 3 cars I had originally edited the article with.
If you let me know how to proceed, I can send you .pdfs of the pages of the book.
The McKenzie Bentleys were specially modified with triple carbs, lower chassis and modified radiator. Their performance is over and above those of a "standard" 8 Litre and they are an important part of 8 Litre history.
I didn't want to edit the article before writing to you and get a response. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.145.218.228 (talk) 13:35, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- Dear concerned editor:
- I have found an online review of Bentley Eight Litre by Clare Hay. Congratulations to you for accessing a book that costs almost 300 quid! As much as I would love to see those .pdfs; I would not love to have my e-mail address fall into the wrong hands. You can probably contact me about that at Flickr where I go by the name "grockbuster".
- You can reference the book by using the reference tags: <ref name="nameofyourchoice">information on the book</ref>. It would be best if you format the information on the book using Template:Cite book.
Hi Sam
I'm very much a technical numpty (symptom of my age perhaps!)! What I'll do is try the flickr thing you mentioned and see if I can contact you there.
Thx. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.145.218.228 (talk) 14:30, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- No problem. I think I sent you an e-mail. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 14:41, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
Hiya, we've made contact on Flickr nice and anonymously! I'm not sure how to send you the .pdf or to edit the article in any way but extremely basically! Email me back at Flickr and I can send you the .pdf you want with a little introduction if you don't know that much about the McKenzie specials. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.145.218.228 (talk) 14:45, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- Will do! I actually know nothing about the McKenzie specials. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 14:48, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
can I help ?
I've opened a discussion at Talk:Frank Costin, I see you have made improvements, but Eddaido undid them, I get the feeling that you are both making valid improvements, so please if you have time, help me to help Eddaido (he is not as nasty as he seems) :) Penyulap ☏ 10:15, 22 Jul 2012 (UTC)
Infobox images
Hi, why you are formatting infobox images with frameless or upright parameters? we are having the default system as 250px on the box, we should follow same system in every article. Or is there some specific problem with those? -->Typ932 T·C 10:52, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
- I am following the guidelines given in Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Images#Image syntax for forced image sizes, where the use of upright parameters is preferred over the use of fixed pixel widths. Does WikiProject Automobile have a different guideline? Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 11:06, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
- 'upright' isn't always ideal here (a MediaWiki limitation - 'upright' doesn't mean what you might expect), but I support anything that gets us away from hard-coded pixel sizes. Nor is 250px some rigidly agreed default for masthead images. Many articles use 300px instead. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:31, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
- I think we should use the same system on every page, that we dont end to have dozen different infoboxes, it can also confuse some new editors, if there is not strick rule. If there is problem with the current 250px "default", I think we need to discuss on the project page. Im not sure if the wp:cars have guideline , but our layout example has 250px and its used in 99% of automobile articles -->Typ932 T·C 11:53, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
- Here's what the link in the earlier reply has to say about using fixed pixel widths, 250px or otherwise: "Alternatively, a fixed size can be specified in the form |XXXpx, where XXX is replaced by a number of pixels, although this should be avoided where possible, since it overrides the users default."
- The term "should be avoided where possible" suggests to me that this should probably not be used as a "default system".
- Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 12:03, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

- maybe but before we make such changes, it would be good to discuss it, because it concerns thousands? of articles -->Typ932 T·C 13:28, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
- If the lead image size was set correctly in the first place, no more than 300px, then changing it to upright=1.35 will be unnoticeable by everyone using default parameters. For the small numbers of users whose default images are small at 180px, or are large at 300px, the change to a ratio of their default image is an improvement. We have no idea what their display looks like, but we do know that they've told us what they think looks good, 180, or 300, or whatever. Following a ratio of that rather than hard coding is clearly better.
I know it's been discussed on a great many occasions, and I don't see a need to get even more approval; unforcing image sizes already has broad consensus. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 15:45, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the Welcome!
Hi, and thanks for the welcome message :). Thank you also for the tip on the online vs. print versions of articles. I wasn't sure how to deal with that - I thought being able to confirm some of the facts at least online might be valuable, but didn't want to link to it for information that's only listed in print. I'll try the journal template if I run into that again in the future, and maybe just stick to the print version. Thanks again! Runinthegrass (talk) 19:17, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

BMW 303 merge
Hi Sambob, I don't mean to sound rude, but I'm indifferent regarding whether the articles be merged or not. On one hand, I see your point regarding the similarity of the cars, on the other hand they exist as separate entities in a popular culture sense (I realise this is a bit inconsistent though, since the 315s and 319s are combined in a single page). Since no-one has opposed the merger, I believe you are welcome to do it, if it has been proposed for more than 10 days.
Thanks for inviting me to comment on this. All the best, 1292simon (talk) 03:09, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for your frank and honest reply. You were one of three editors to have made content-based contributions, so I notified you of the discussion. However, I have read that the required wait is a week; if no objection is raised, I will get to it this Wednesday. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 10:15, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Isetta
Hi there, I took out the image you'd re-added to the Iso section of the Isetta page. Despite its title, the main picture actually shows the later BMW version of the car - I've edited it's description on commons to make it a bit clearer. Best Regards Mighty Antar (talk) 02:32, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- Mr. Antar, how certain are you that the photo at the bottom is the BMW version of the car? There is only one photo of a BMW version having that long headlight casing, which is in the BMW museum where it may be from a very early, very short run. However, the long casing is present on all but one of the photos of the Romi version from Brazil. (The one "Romi" without the long headlight casing looks very much like a modified BMW 600 to me...) Even more problematic is the teardrop-shaped indicator, which is present on neither the BMW Museum photograph nor on any of the Romis. How do you know which one it is? Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 11:15, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- 100%. The photo is identical to that used by BMW in their own publicity material from 1954. The Romi version has a different door handle, indicators and indicator mounts and the front mudguards are also slightly shorter. Mighty Antar (talk) 12:11, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

- SamBlob, checking with you; someone has raised an issue regarding this DYK hook at Main Page/Errors, namely that it should be 1919, not 1917. This seems to correspond to what both articles say, but I see 1917 all through the nomination discussion, so I hesitate to alter it on the Main Page, not knowing the subject. Was 1917 in fact an error that no one spotted, or have I missed something in the history somewhere? Yngvadottir (talk) 16:54, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

I do not think that this edit is appropriate for two reasons and I think you ought to revert it.
The first is procedural: it is an undiscussed change in the middle of a set of edits which are ment to reflect the agreement(s) reached on the talk page.
The second reason is my own POV: I disagree with your statement in the edit history for making the edit ("Changed wording to be less colloquial."), as I do not think that the wording you changed is colloquial (that type of wording is used in at least two secondary sources (probably based on a primary source by Baird)):
- Bob Greenlee (2010) John Logie Baird: The Man Who Invented Television, p. 170
- R. W. Burns (2000) John Logie Baird, Television Pioneer, p.137
BTW as far as I can tell the sentence is not supported by the current cited source (which is for the quote and as such those sentences before the quote need a source. I think the Greenlee is probably better as it is from an author other than Burns and I think brings more balance to the sources.
I am not going to revert your change because I do not want to get involved in editing the article, because is too easy for me to stray from being an unbiased observer. So if you disagree with my evidence and still think that the change is worth making, then for procedural reasons, at the very least you need to retrospectively explain and justify your alteration on the talk page of the article, otherwise it could be the seeds for another edit war.-- PBS (talk) 08:06, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Vandalism of Coupe de Ville
Hello, I'm Trident13. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions to Coupe de Ville because it did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks! Namely [1]. Ridiculous for an experienced editor to provide such a covering of your true intentions edit summary. Take it to the talk page if you have a problem. Rgds, --Trident13 (talk) 11:00, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Not nearly as ridiculous as the edits you made. I am therefore forced to do what I had tried to do earlier, which is go through it piece by piece and remove the male bovine eliminatory product (MBEP) where I see it. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 11:54, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Can I ask that, before you get yourself into any more trouble, that you go and read WP:AGF? The summary of your previous edit and edit summary was as you know ridiculous. You also choose to remove the term as French language origin, which is wholly factually incorrect. Rgds, --Trident13 (talk) 14:08, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- From WP:AGF: "This guideline does not require that editors continue to assume good faith in the presence of obvious evidence to the contrary..." The citing sources that do not support the text being cited is obvious evidence to the contrary. Evidence of dishonesty is good enough reason to stop assuming good faith. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 16:48, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- As a Brit (much as though I spent 20 years working in North America), I haven't got a clue what a Town Car is above a Lincoln model. Rgds, --Trident13 (talk) 14:08, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- I am quite certain that the "Rolls Royce/HJ Mulliner build sheet" also described the respective entities as "Rolls-Royce" and "H. J. Mulliner" respectively.
- I have been to the German Wikipedia article and I noticed something interesting: They actually cited their sources for this one! (They often don't.) Most of the citations are to Coach Building Terminology at Coachbuilt.com ...an American website. Who's Yankifying Wikipedia, then? Don't talk to me of misuse of edit summmaries when you use yours to make anti-American statements instead of identifying your source as a translation of German Wikipedia.
- In German, as in English, a Wikipedia article is only as good as its sources. Sources = Credibility, and the converse is also true: No Sources = No Credibility. You had access to all their sources and you named only one of them (without giving a link) and put existing ones that didn't support the text instead. Are you usually this careful? How many articles have you edited over the years? We're going to need a bigger broom!

"In concert"
You removed the phrase "in concert" from the Flat-twin engine page. "In concert" means "acting together in a co-ordinated fashion with a common purpose", so I maintain it was a correct usage and possibly better than "simultaneously". Arrivisto (talk) 12:55, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
- Fortunately, we seem to agree that "in phase with each other" says it better than either of those options; either that or you haven't yet noticed that that's what the article says now. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 19:21, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
- On another matter, could you instruct me how to crop a Wikimedia photo, please. The picture captioned "Radial disc brakes on MV Agusta" on the disc brake page could do with cropping. Thanks in anticipation! Arrivisto (talk) 11:41, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
- Go to the source and download the picture at its original size.
- Use a graphics program to crop the picture, then save the cropped picture. (The graphics program I used most recently was Windows Office Picture Manager; it's possible with MSPaint but my experience is that MSPaint doesn't work well with jpg files.)
- Upload the cropped picture at Wikimedia Commons, stating the source and the licence under which the source is made available.
- The cropped picture will then be available for use from Wikimedia Commons.

Additional photo request ideas
Sam,
If you want additional photo ideas:
- American International School of Kingston - 2 College Green Avenue, Kingston 6, Jamaica
- Ministry of National Security (Jamaica) headquarters - North Tower NCB Towers 2 Oxford Road Kingston 5
- Department of Correctional Services, Jamaica headquarters: 5-7 King Street, Kingston Jamaica, West Indies
Are you interested in taking these photos? WhisperToMe (talk) 05:02, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
- Not really; AISK is at the end of a long dead-end road and, while I don't think it's illegal to photograph anything visible from the road, Amercans tend to be paranoid about their children and I just might get picked up by the CIA. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 10:06, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
- I understand. Anyway, happy editing! :) WhisperToMe (talk) 15:42, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Meadowbrook High School, Jamaica
I wonder if you're interested in photographing Meadowbrook High School, Jamaica. The address is in the article. WhisperToMe (talk) 06:44, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
- May I offer this alternative: There are several Jamaican high schools with Wikipedia articles with no photos in them. I suggest that you prepare a boilerplate letter to the school principals asking them for photographs of the school that are adequately licensed for use in Wikipedia. I further suggest that you suggest to them that this might be a good activity for the school's photography club if it has one. The contact info for each school should be available at their website.
- While the above approach might not work, the result if it does is highly likely to be better than a few snap shots taken from outside the school by someone the faculty or the police might suspect of being a burglar or worse.
Dear Mr./Mrs./Ms. ????(Name of the principal),
My name is ????? and I am a volunteer for Wikipedia. I came across the article about your school, [[??????]], and I notice there are currently no photos of the institution in the article.
Sincerely, ??? --- How is this for a start? (It may be a good boilerplate for schools in countries where photography is seen as very suspicious, especially in parts of the Middle East and Africa) WhisperToMe (talk) 13:32, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
- Sounds good. Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 19:37, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
