It would seem to me that an important part of Virtual sex is the advent of webcams. Even before streaming meida there were webcams that would send a still image every 30 seconds or however often it was set for. This certainly led to a form of social networking that often remained only virtual and indeed also became pornography as soon as viewers started recording these images. These did not even require a "provider" as once a webcam site was talked about a person could go directly to that webcam's broadcast. A service such as ICQ provided for verbal exchange and personal exchange of photographs. livegrab and other software was available that would allow recording more than one such transmission simultaneously. Some would record and review later. Others would be online and as they saw action on one site move between several different webcams. ICQ dialog would at times lead to persons setting up a unique address for a "private" transmission to an individual. This was, of course "private" only by virtue of the address being only given to that one person. Part of the allure of this networking was that it was relatively inexpensive and available to most anyone, so Cams were set up in the rooms of college students, and other amateurs that at times had not thought through the ultimate consequences which is another topic all together. This is a subject that I believe needs to be included in several interrelated articles here and has really not been addressed or developed. I'm looking for suggestions on how or if others believe it should be included here. Doc ♬ talk 20:43, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Now I don't know if it's just me, but the "Addiction" section seems largely misplaced (as sex addiction is its own page) and mostly a personal opinion/research of the sole author who wrote the section. That section is longer than the entire rest of the article. From the wording, this represents a US bias. Other countries or cultures may have different age limits for consent, and some might outlaw it totally. This section may need some work. LessHeard vanU (talk) 16:30, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

:Agree, it seems to imply there is a universal 18-year age limit for virtual sex, this certainly is not true. The reference to "being a cyborg" is confusing and seems to be unfounded. If the author of that would refer to one or more specific psychologists it could be retained. Otherwise I'd prefer to remove it.JimD 23:32, 2004 Apr 22 (UTC)

In an HTML comment, Tillwe suggests I may be thinking of Donna Haraway. I should look it up sometime.
If you do remove it from the article, please move it here for safekeeping. Thanks. Martin 00:46, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)

opponents branding it as a form of pornography

Umm, it is a form of pornography. Isn't this just a fact, rather than something that needs attributing? Martin 17:38, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Well, a transcript of a cybersex "scene" would certainly be pornographic. However, if we consider cybersex to be a sexual activity ... is copulation "a form of pornography?" Is fellatio done by people in meatspace a form of pornography? I don't think so. The activity is distinct from its representation in some medium. Even when a voyeur watches a group of exhibitionists it's not generally considered "pornography."JimD 18:06, 2004 Apr 23 (UTC)
Ahh, of course - virtual sex only becomes pornography if it is recorded and then re-viewed (where the re-viewing is for sexual purposes). Good point. Martin 21:47, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)

The future

[edit]

We need only to look at the disastrous outcome resulting from the sexual relations between Eddie Murphy and Mel B, an outcome requiring some $15,000/month for child support, to see that virtual sex is the future. Men: "Remember the alimony!" :-) Already "synthetic telepathy" i.e. man-made artificial telepathy between the computer and the human being via a well understood mapping of the signatures of brain waves has real beginnings, and with developments over the next 20 or 30 years or so, we will be able to download a virtual sex file, just like an .mp3 file, and enjoy a virtual sex experience with NO consequences and NO equivalent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 171.71.55.235 (talk) 02:22, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WEBCAMS

[edit]

Doctalk 20:43, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
