• Oppose This is a nearly identical situation to the requested move of Heyvali (village). both small towns in the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. The issue of de jure vs. de facto territorial control also remains unresolved. Article history show this article has been the subject of a move war going back to 2008. Redirects means users are getting to the correct content, so I'm not convinced a move is appropriate. If anything the article should be moved to Aghdara because the only reason the town qualifer exists is because it was used to move the article during an undiscussed move.--Labattblueboy (talk) 20:40, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
• Comment. I think you'd have to be more persuasive than a Google search, as there's also a Martakert Province. Anyway I'm just here to note a related protection of Mardakert (town), should this article be moved it'll need updating by an admin.   • To clarify this, if this article is to be moved it should be to Mardakert (town), as the page at Mardakert will either continue pointing to the province, or possibly turn into a disambiguation page.     • Hi. The province is named after its administrative center, i.e. Martakert. Mardakert is yet another (but unofficial) version to spell Martakert. Since Mardakert is redirected to Aghdara, I suppose this talk page is the right place to discuss whether or not Aghdara is relevant in English Wikipedia. -- Ashot  ^(talk) 16:28, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Aghdara → Martakert – The Armenian-language name for this town is clearly more widely used in sources (especially books etc.) than the Azerbaijani-language name, as shown in the 2011 move request and still true today. The fact that the town is in a conflict zone complicates things, though, so the 2011 move request did not succeed. However I don't think the discussion then got to all the issues at hand and I'm inclined to think 'Martakert' should be used. I don't think parenthetical disambiguation is necessary to separate the town from the namesake province and raion - maybe that can be discussed separately...

This town is in the former Soviet Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, is under the de facto control of the Republic of Artsakh (prev. Nagorno-Karabakh Republic), and is recognized internationally as being de jure Azerbaijani territory. But unlike the much-argued-over Heyvali (village), it was in Nagorno-Karabakh AO proper, not in territory unilaterally annexed later by Artsakh without no recognition whatsoever. A number of users in the Heyvali move request said that they made a distinction based on this. There are multiple reasons for this: the Armenian-language name was predominately used during the Soviet era and further back, the ethnic Armenian side in the conflict perhaps is recognized as having a more legitimate interest in the place, and so on. I couldn't find sources specifically about the name of this town, but it seems both names have some history.

And significantly, every other major settlement in the borders of the Nagorno-Karabakh AO is under the Armenian-language name, with there perhaps being consensus at least for the capital Stepanakert based on the principle of using the commonly used name (that inconsistency being what prompted this move request). —innotata 04:53, 17 September 2018 (UTC) --Relisting. The main title header of this article was moved back and forth from Aghdara to Martakert nine times between its creation in August 2008 and its being protected indefinitely as Aghdara in August 2010. Unlike the Turkish names for places in Northern Cyprus from which the original Greek-speaking population had been expelled, Martakert has always been an Armenian-speaking place and the former Soviet Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast has always been an Armenian-majority region. • I have no idea and am typing this as I do research live. We're supposed to follow usage in reliable English sources. Let's start with NY Times. 4 hits for Martakert; zero for Aghadara. Point Martakert. The London Times has one hit for MartaKert, And zero for Aghdara. It's not much, but it's supportive of the nom, and suggests English speakers looking up this topic are most likely using Martakert. The original name

The city belongs to Azerbaijan Republic. Armenia invaded it in 1990s. But the city is accepted as of Azerbaijan. And in 2020 Azerbaijan released the city from Armenian terrorists. So why not Aghdara, the real name? If it is an official Azerbaijani city, then you can't predict Mardakert before Aghdara. The first and real factual official name is Aghdara. Aghdara has been captured by the Azerbaijani troops

I would like to note that according to both Azerbaijani and Armenian sources, Azerbaijan Armed forces have taken control of Aghdara/Martakert. Here is proof showing an Azerbaijani soldier in Aghdara. [2] EloquentEditor (talk) 18:54, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Name of article

Town's administrative status

Since the December 5th, 2023 Aghdara is a part and administrative centre of Aghdara District not Tartar. So I pupose the change in text, additionally separate Aghdara District article should be created in wikipedia, because as far as I have seen article related to Aghdara district is directed to Martaket district which was a former district in now-abolished artsakh republic.

Additionally armenian version of name "Martakert" is disrespectful to come first in the head of the article as it is now returned to their rightful owners azeris. EntityRrr (talk) 09:58, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
