The original Atherstone Town club was formed in 1887, and after drifting between various local leagues, settled in the [[Birmingham Combination]] in 1911, where they remained until 1954. Prior to this the Adders had gained national recognition by reaching the semi-final of the [[FA Amateur Cup]] in both 1907 and 1909. After several decades of varying performance, the 1947–48 season saw the Adders claim the Birmingham Combination League and Cup double. In 1954 they stepped up to the Birmingham and District League (later renamed the [[West Midlands (Regional) League]]), where they were runners-up in 1972 and moved up to the [[Southern League (football)|Southern League]]. In their first season they gained promotion to the [[Southern League Premier Division|Premier Division]], where their best position was third in 1973–74, but the club was forced into liquidation in the summer of 1979.


Atherstone finished bottom of Division One in [[1957–58 Birmingham and District|1957–58]] and were relegated back to Division Two. However, they finished third in Division Two the [[1958–59 Birmingham and District|following season]] and were promoted to Division One. The league was reduced to a single division in 1960, and was renamed the [[West Midlands (Regional) League]] in 1962.<ref name=FCHD1/> When it expanded in 1965, Atherstone became members of the Premier Division. A group of local enthusiasts managed to fulfil the team's reserve fixtures in the West Midlands League under the name Atherstone United and then decided to continue under that name as a new club.

In 1982 the new club won promotion to the [[West Midlands (Regional) League]] Premier Division, followed in 1986–87 by winning the Premier Division title and promotion to the [[Southern Football League|Southern League]] Midland Division. However, the end of the 1999–00 season saw Atherstone relegated for the first time in either incarnation. The situation at the club worsened and in September 2003 Atherstone United were put into liquidation. Again a group of supporters formed a new Atherstone Town club.

After winning Division One and the President's Cup in their first season, they were Premier Division champions and League Cup winners in [[2005–06 Midland Football Combination|2005–06]] and were promoted to the [[Midland Football Alliance|Midland Alliance]]. In their debut season the new Atherstone Town were accepted into the [[Midland Football Combination|Midland Combination]] Division One, winning the league and promotion at the first attempt along with the President's Cup. In the 2005–06 season, they were the champions of the [[Midland Football Combination|Midland Combination]] Premier Division and thus stepped up to the [[Midland Football Alliance]]. Further success in 2005–06 came in the Birmingham County FA Midweek Floodlit Cup and the Midland Combination Endsleigh Challenge Cup. In the 2007–08 season, the club won promotion again as champions of the Midland Football Alliance, the club's third promotion in four seasons.
The first season in the Southern League Midland Division saw the Adders in the top three for most of the season. At the end they finished third behind champions Leamington and near neighbours Nuneaton Town. They made the play-offs, only to lose to Chasetown. They did however win the GX Southern League Cup for the first time after beating Bridgwater Town in the two legged final.


Division One Midlands was renamed Division One Central in 2010, and Atherstone were relegated back to the Midland Alliance at the end of the [[2010–11 Southern Football League|2010–11 season]] after finishing second-from-bottom of the division.<ref name=FCHD1/> They suffered a second successive relegation after finishing second-from-bottom of the Midland Alliance the [[2011–12 Midland Football Alliance|following season]], returning to the Premier Division of the Midland Combination. When the Combination merged with the Midland Alliance to form the [[Midland Football League|Midland League]] in 2014, Atherstone were placed in Division One.<ref name=FCHD1/> In [[2021–22 Midland Football League|2021–22]] they were Division One champions, earning promotion to the Premier Division.
Due to financial problems, the club had to resign from the Southern League mid-way during the 2010–11 season. In 2011–12 they played in the [[Midland Football Alliance]] but were relegated at the end of the season to the Midland Combination Premier Division. The team were managed by [[Dale Belford]], his assistant manager is Steve Hinks, Reserve team manager is Richard Smith and Youth Team manager Mark Grainger and first team coach is Wayne Chapman. However Belford moved back to [[Tamworth F.C.|Tamworth]], and the club are now managed by Mark Grainger, who was joined later by Martin Sockett as a joint manager.

Disorder broke out at an [[FA Cup]] game against [[Barrow A.F.C.|Barrow]] at Sheepy Road on 12 October 2013, when Atherstone fans invaded the pitch and were involved in clashes with visiting supporters. The following February when 29 Atherstone fans were charged in court for their conduct months earlier.<ref>[http://onlinenews.warwickshire.police.uk/wpnews_pressrelease/rss/16069 Warwickshire Police report on the charges]</ref> In November 2015, those charged were sentenced to prison sentences for their violent behaviour.

Atherstone Town Community Football Club is a football club based in Atherstone, Warwickshire, England. They are currently members of the Midland League Premier Division and play at Sheepy Road.

History

The original club was formed in 1887. They reached the semi-finals of the FA Amateur Cup in 1907–08, losing 3–0 to Stockton. The following season saw them reach the semi-final stage again, this time losing 3–0 to Clapton.[1] After playing in several local leagues, they joined the Birmingham Combination in 1911, and were runners-up in their first season in the league.[2] The club finished bottom of the league in 1923–24 and again in 1928–29.[3] Following World War II, they were league champions in 1947–48,[3] also winning the Birmingham Senior Cup. When the Combination folded in 1954, all but one of the clubs joined the Birmingham & District League, with Atherstone placed in the transitional Northern Division.[1] A fourteenth-place finish in 1954–55 saw them placed in Division Two for the following season. They went on to finish as runners-up in Division Two, and were promoted to Division One.

Atherstone finished bottom of Division One in 1957–58 and were relegated back to Division Two. However, they finished third in Division Two the following season and were promoted to Division One. The league was reduced to a single division in 1960, and was renamed the West Midlands (Regional) League in 1962.[1] When it expanded in 1965, Atherstone became members of the Premier Division. They were runners-up in the division in 1971–72 and were promoted to Division One North of the Southern League. After finishing as runners-up in Division One North the following season, the club were promoted to the Premier Division, where they remained until folding at the end of the 1978–79 season.

The club was immediately reformed as Atherstone United, taking the reserve team's place in Division One of the West Midlands (Regional) League.[4] They were Division One champions in 1981–82, earning promotion to the Premier Division.[4] After winning the Premier Division title in 1986–87, the club were promoted to the Midland Division of the Southern League. The following season saw them reach the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, eventually losing 2–0 to VS Rugby in a first round replay.[4] They were Midland Division runners-up in 1988–89, securing promotion to the Premier Division.[4] In 1990–91 the club reached the FA Cup first round again; after beating Fleetwood Town 3–1 in the first round, they lost 1–0 at Third Division Crewe Alexandra in the second round.[4] Another FA Cup first round appearance the following season saw them hold Fourth Division Hereford United to a 0–0 draw at Sheepy Road, before losing the replay at Edgar Street 3–0.[4]

Atherstone finished bottom of the Southern League Premier Division in 1999–2000 season and were relegated to the Western Division. They subsequently folded midway through the 2003–04 season. The club was then reformed under the name Atherstone Town, joining Division One of the Midland Combination for the 2004–05 season. After winning Division One and the President's Cup in their first season, they were Premier Division champions and League Cup winners in 2005–06 and were promoted to the Midland Alliance. The club were Midland Alliance champions in 2007–08, earning promotion to Division One Midlands of the Southern League. In 2008–09 they finished third in the division, qualifying for the promotion play-offs, but lost the semi-final 5–0 to Chasetown

Division One Midlands was renamed Division One Central in 2010, and Atherstone were relegated back to the Midland Alliance at the end of the 2010–11 season after finishing second-from-bottom of the division.[1] They suffered a second successive relegation after finishing second-from-bottom of the Midland Alliance the following season, returning to the Premier Division of the Midland Combination. When the Combination merged with the Midland Alliance to form the Midland League in 2014, Atherstone were placed in Division One.[1] In 2021–22 they were Division One champions, earning promotion to the Premier Division.
