Delirium is a 1998 novel by Douglas Anthony Cooper and is the second entry in his Izzy Darlow series. The book was released by Hyperion in February 1998, and the Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada noted that it was "the first novel by an established author that was serialized on the Internet (Cooper began serializing the novel in 1994, shortly after the Web became widely available.)"
Delirium (1998), is the second Izzy Darlow novel by Douglas Anthony Cooper. The narrative follows Izzy as a writer in New York, unspooling the tale of Ariel Price, a famous architect who vows to murder his biographer. Like the monstrous architectural projects in which Price specializes, the novel's structure increases in complexity as its scope expands.

Synopsis
The New York Times observed that Cooper "invents an underground city of the dead and the disenfranchised that suggests the night visions in "The Crying of Lot 49" (by Thomas Pynchon). The novel addresses the problems of narrative itself, and in particular a person's will to control his or her story, even after death. As with Amnesia, Delirium addresses the nature of horror, and of the impossible drive to redeem the broken human spirit.
Delirium has Izzy Darlow in New York, investigating the architect Ariel Price in order to write a biography about the man. Price proves to be an unwilling subject, threatening to murder his biographer.

Delirium is widely recognized as the first novel serialized on the World Wide Web.

Delirium gained a following among architecture students and academic theorists, and Cooper has been deeply involved in the architectural community as an artistic collaborator.

Delirium is a 1998 novel by Douglas Anthony Cooper and is the second entry in his Izzy Darlow series. The book was released by Hyperion in February 1998, and the Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada noted that it was "the first novel by an established author that was serialized on the Internet (Cooper began serializing the novel in 1994, shortly after the Web became widely available.)"[1]

Synopsis

[edit]

Delirium has Izzy Darlow in New York, investigating the architect Ariel Price in order to write a biography about the man. Price proves to be an unwilling subject, threatening to murder his biographer.

Reception

[edit]

The New York Times wrote: "Although you can argue about whether the book represents high or low art, it's clearly art. Calling it pulp of a very high order allows you to pick your qualification: yes, but it's still pulp; or, yes, but it's still of a very high order."[2] Quill and Quire expressed disappointment over Delirium, calling it "overwrought".[3] Kirkus Reviews considered the book "baffling" as well as "fascinating." They described Cooper as "a comic-surrealist crossbreed of the late Lawrence Durrell and William S. Burroughs".[4]
