:One example would be a New York subway poster from the mid 1970's, which had the caption "Thank you for making America great!" It had pictures of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln - and Smokey the Bear! (I think I remember them as being pictured as heads on Mt. Rushmore, but I'm not certain.) It may be worth mentioning that the current voice of Smokey Bear, [[Sam Elliott]], coincidentally shares his birthday with the anniversary of Smokey's first poster: August 9, 1944. ==wildfires ''versus'' forest fires== |
"In 2001, [the slogan] was officially amended to replace "forest fires" with "wildfires", as a reminder that other areas (such as grasslands) are also in danger of burning." |
== Name: 60's & 70's == |
This ''is not'' correct. It was traditionally assumed that most forest fires were the result of human carelessness (or arson). In fact, forest fires have multiple causes, including lightning strikes. They're "natural", part of the normal cycle of destruction and regrowth. Preventing forest fires can have the paradoxical effect of causing worse forest fires, due to buildup of flammable material (such as dead trees). Forest fires are sometimes started deliberately, to clear out this detritus. They are, by definition, ''not'' wildfires. The name was always "Smokey the Bear" and it was never, ever Smokey Bear. Smokey the Bear was always THE bear cub that survived a forest fire. Hence, Smokey the Bear makes sense. == High school mascot in 1939??? == |

I says under [[Capitan Gap fire]] that Smokey was rescued by firefighters. Perhaps someone who knows for sure could make sure each says the same thing? |
If, as claimed in the "Peak in Popularity" section, a high school in Black Hills City, South Dakota was granted the rights to use Smokey as their mascot in 1939, the dates do not add up as Smokey was not created and adopted as the Forest Service mascot until 1944. Either the high school got its date wrong, or they waited until at least 5 years after their students' forest firefighting participation to adopt Smokey as ''their'' mascot, or somebody is Blowing Smoke (pun definitely intended)! ::Smokey Bear as a character was created in 1944, six years before an actual bear cub named "Smokey" was rescued. It is perfectly possible for people to be both soldiers and firefighters, and there is no contradiction. Simply order well-trained soldiers to fight a fire, and . . . voila! |
