Reliability of sources; hardly think it's your place to judge

The Sun is a national newspaper, regardless of how sensational the claim it's still a rumour published in a mainstream newspaper. There was no mention of it as a fact, but there was the fact that the link existed. There are references from goal.com and the MEN in that article, hardly a more reliable source than a national newspaper...
