His father, Kevin was one of New Zealand's leading jazz bassists and with his guitarist brother Joel, they were playing International Jazz Festivals by the time they were in their early teens. Haines played gigs with Joel across New Zealand, before moving to [[New York City]] in 1991 to study jazz music. Haines spent most of 2014 recording ''5 A Day'' in rural [[Buckinghamshire]] with writing and production partner [[Mike Patto]]. In 1991 at the age of 19 he moved to New York to further his study of jazz music. During this period he studied under saxophonists [[George Coleman]] and [[Joe Lovano]]. Haines became influenced by new music that blended hip-hop, Latin and dance music elements. After returning to New Zealand he performed between 1992 and 1995 at the Auckland nightclub [[Cause Celebre]], wiIn 1994 he released his first solo album, [[Shift Left]] for the independent huh! label, a division of [[Polygram]]. This album went onto achieve Gold status in New Zealand and was also released in the UK on the prestigious [[Verve label]] as well as Australia. [[Shift Left]] blended turntable stylings from local top DJ [[Manuel Bundy]], rap and spoken word from [[Dei Hamo]], Hame and [[Pauly Fuemana]] aka [[OMC]] and featuring his brother [[Joel Haines]] on guitar, [[Kevin Field]] on keyboards, [[Mickey Ututaonga]] on drums and Puerto Rican born percussion [[Miguel Fuente]] (ex Patti Labelle and Grover Washington band). The album was original recorded by [[Steve Garden]] at [[Revolver Studios]] to [[Studer]] 24 track tape but this was later transferred and re-edited and overdubbed at [[Alan Jansen's]] Uptown Studios which shortly after recorded the worldwide smash [[How Bizzare]]. Nathan still tours and records with several of the original band to this day.

In 1995 he moved to London and experimented with different sounds after playing alongside UK DJ [[Roy The Roach]]. Collaborating with members from London drum and bass record company [[MetalHeadz]], he produced several drum and bass singles under the pseudonym ‘Sci-clone’ with producer A-Sides (Jason Cambridge) with whom he records with currently.

This was followed up by the live/studio based album ''Soundkilla sessions Vol 1'' which showcased the high level of musicianship and on-stage chemistry with his New Zealand band.

After collaborating with West London based dance-music producer Phil Asher the pair secured funding from Chilli Funk Records to record the now classic 2000 ''Sound Travels'' album, which saw the song "Earth is the Place" feature in the top DJ charts of numerous world wide DJ's and was released on Francois Kervorkian's New York label Wave with Nathan and vocalist Verna Francis performing the tune live at the legendary Body and Soul nightclub. The album also featured more jazz based fare and saw the inclusion of long term writing partners and musicians such as [[Mike Patto]], [[Vanessa Freeman]], [[Chris Franck]], [[Kaidi Thatham]] and many more.

The 2003 album ''Squire For Hire'' possesses a diverse sound, featuring contributions from producers/performers [[Mark De Clive-Lowe]], producer/poet [[Rich Medina]], vocalists, [[Marcus Begg]], [[Guida da Palma]], and US soul legend [[Marlena Shaw]] on the title track.

Haines subsequently performed on the [[Jamiroquai]] album, [[Dynamite (Jamiroquai album)]] and has recorded a song with [[2D (Gorillaz)|2D]] - [[Damon Albarn]], titled FM, originally recorded by [[Steely Dan]] on the "Squire For Hire" album.

Haines' album entitled ''Heaven & Earth'' was released in 2010 on the [[Warner Music]] label and was produced by Haines himself and featured [[Mickey Ututaonga]] on drums, [[Vanessa Freeman]] and [[Kevin Mark Trail]] on vocals (as well as Nathan) and recorded largely in the analog domain by engineer Neil Baldock at [[Neil Finn's]] [[Roundhead]] studio based in Auckland.

Haines's most recent albums The Poet's Embrace and follow-up Vermillion Skies saw Haines return to the classic Quartet format with both being recorded straight to analog [[Ampex]] 2-track with an array of vintage microphones and equipment and were recorded at Auckland's York St studios. The Poet's Embrace was featured in many of New Zealand's top album lists, and was released in 2013 in both the UK and Germany on the [[Warner Classics and Jazz]] label to critical acclaim, with many citing Nathan's classic tenor sound, writing and approach as a "coming of age" album. Both albums were produced by [[Mike Patto]] and recorded by [[Simon Gooding]], with contributions by arranger Wayne Senior on the classic "Lament" as recorded by [[Miles Davis in the late 1950's]], as well as Nathan singing two self penned originals, one of which was co-written with Patto.

Nathan continues to perform at Festivals around Europe and is regular performer at London's Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club. He also DJ's a selection of music alongside his wife as Mr&Mrs Haines with Nathan playing live flute and saxophone.
