<blockquote>Sodepur is part of an ancient settlement evolving on the bank of [[ganges]] associated with ancient maritime port of bengal supposedly called ''''পন্নহট্ট''' ' or ' '''পেনেটী''' ' or ''''পণ্যহাটি'''<nowiki/>' or '<nowiki/>'''পুণ্যহট্ট''' ' or ''''পানিহাটি''' ' or [[Panihati]] is witness lot history across oriental. In the early days when river transport was the primary means of communication, Panihati was a major trading and business centre, then known as Pannyahati (Emporium for Merchandise). Scholars feel that the name has come from the word Pannyahatic. Recent [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodepur?#Ardhanarishvara_idol_:_recent_archeological_find archeological discovery of an Ardhanarishvara idol] in Sodepore from [[Pala Empire|Palas]] / [[Sena dynasty|Sena]] times pushes earliest known settlement to atleast [[9th century|9th centur]]<nowiki/>y, however history of this riverine settlement across ganges could even be from a much earlier time for which all references are now lost in time. Legend says that towards the end of the [[13th century|13th Century]] A.D, [[Maharaja]] '''Chandraketu''' of '''[[Deganga]]''' established a গড় or garh or [[Fortification]] at Panihati. He placed an '''[[icon]] of [[Bhavani|Bhawani]]''' within fort. The Bhawani Garh is somewhere in Ghoshpara to north of [[Panihati]], now called as called Bhawanipur. Some says that Kali image in the '''Pancharatna Temple of Trannath''' was once located in the palace of [[Chandraketugarh|Chandraketu]] at [[Berachampa]]. During the [[Bengali Muslims#Early Islamic kingdoms|Turko-Afghan raid]] some one had carried the image away and established the same here. The other version is that the idol belonged to the '''Gangulies''' '''of [[Bagbazar|Baghbazar]]''' and was sent here during [[Maratha invasions of Bengal|Maratha raids]] in the [[18th century|18th Century]].Reference of the glorious heritage of this place is found in the ancient literature. Reference of Sukchar is found in the '''voyage''' '''route of [[Chand Sadagar]] “[[Manasamangal Kāvya|Manasa Mangal]]”''' written by [[Bipradas Pipilai]] in [[1495]].''''' ''The [[Bhagirathi River|Bhagirathi]] Mapfrom Suti to [[Gangasagar]] prepared by[[João de Barros|Jao De Barros]] in [[1550]] BS, mentions Agarpara and Barnagar. Panihati is mentioned in several [[Vaishnava Padavali]] literary texts . Panihati has been depicted as a prosperous and sacred place in [[Chaitanya Charitamrita]], [[Chaitanya Bhagavata|Chaitanya Bhagabat]], [[Chaitanya Mangala|Chaitanya Mangal]] & other texts. [[William Wilson Hunter|W. W. Hunter]] in the ‘[[iarchive:astatisticalacc01kiscgoog|Statistical Account of Bengal, 1875]], mentioned “''Strictly speaking with the exception of Calcutta, there was no large river side cities, with community living by water traffic. The following is the list of the chief trading towns and villages showing principal articles for which each is noted. The Hooghly - Baranagar, Dakshineswar, Agarpara, Panihati and Sukchar''”. It is also worth to note from the 24 Parganas District Gazetteer “Chaitanya then stopped at a very populous and prosperous village called Panihati. According to '''‘[[Chaitanya Bhagavata|'''Chaitanya Bhagavata''']]''' no other village on the eastern bank of the Bhagirathi was as populous and prosperous as Panihati in those days''<nowiki/>'. '''[[Chaitanya Mahaprabhu|Chaitanya Deb]]''' had taken '''[[Sannyasa|sannyas]]''' exactly 500 years back in the year [[1510]] and his first visit to Panihati was in the year '''[[1514]]'''. Panihati was a major centre of '''[[Vaishnavism|Vaishnab Culture]]''' through [[Nityananda|'''Nityananda Mahaprabhu''']] and [https://panihatidandomahotsav.weebly.com/raghav-pandit--patbari.html '''Raghav Pandit'''] who also started the famous 500 year old [https://www.iskconbangalore.org/blog/delightful-story-of-panihati-chida-dahi-festival/ Panihati Chida-dahi festival] called [https://panihatichidautsav.in/ দ্বন্দ্বমহোৎসব] or [https://panihatichidautsav.in/danda_mahotsav Danda mahotsav] . Panihati Municipality was established in 1900.<ref name="municipality">{{cite web|title=Panihati Municipality|url=http://barrackpore.gov.in/HTM/sdobkp_Panihati%20Municipality.htm|access-date=25 June 2018|publisher=Barrackpore administration}}</ref> This place is said to be visited by Sri [[Chaitanya Mahaprabhu]] on his way to [[Puri]] & later by his close associate [[Nityananda]] too, due to which [[Gaudiya Vaishnavas]] consider this place holy. |

* '''[[Sukchar|SODEPUR]]''' : There was once a community named [[Sayyid]] in this area from which the place was known as Sayyidpur or Sodepur.<ref>{{Cite web|title=:: Welcome to Panihati Municipality ::|url=https://www.panihatimunicipality.in/html/origin-name.html|access-date=2021-05-18|website=www.panihatimunicipality.in}}</ref> |

* '''[[Panihati|PANIHATI]] :''' Panihati was known as a leading trade/ Business centre in early days when the river route was a main means communication and even trade with east Bengal - Jessore was made. The town was known as '''পন্নহট্ট''' '''or''' ‘'''PANNYAHATI'''’ (''Emporium for the'' ''Merchandise'' ). From that early name this place is said to be converted as '''পানিহাটি or PANIHATI''' later.In another version, a special rice named PENETI was imported at this place from Jessore district and the name পানিহাটি or PANIHATI might have a link with '''পেনেটী''' '''or PENETI'''.Once this place was the centre of worship of ''the '''[https://tricycle.org/beginners/buddhism/what-is-buddhist-tantra/ Buddhist Tantricts], the''''' '''''[[Shaivism|Shaibas]], the [[Kapalika|Kapaliks]]'' and ''the Natha<nowiki>''</nowiki>'''''s''. In the sixteenth century it was also known as a major centre of '''[[Vaishnavism|Baisnabas]]'''''. In that way, the place was very secret or '''পুণ্যহট্ট or PUNNYA-HATTA''' (Holy place) and later on converted to Panihati. |
According to a famous linguistic expert and professor Dr. Paresh Chandra Majumder, the word PANIHATI was taken from the word '''PANYAHATTIC'''. |
* '''[[Agarpara|AGARPARA]]:''' Once upon a time a community named '''AGHORE''', who were specialized in boat making, used to live here.Earlier this place was known as AGRRAPALLI from where the name has been changed into AGARPARA. |
* '''[[Sukchar|SUKCHAR]]:''' Once this place was famous for producing home-based sugar (Sharkara). From this SHARKARA the place might have been renamed as SUKCHAR. There is a opinion that the place was made of the '''sand of the river''' i.e, "'''Char'''" which was later on converted to SUKCHAR. In another version, the inhabitants of this place were rich through manufacturing & business and the '''people used to live in "Sukh"''' or "'''happily'''". Name of Sukchar name might have been obtained form "Sukh". |
* '''KRISHNAPUR:''' Earlier this place had a connection with the king of Krishnanagar, '''''Raja'' ''Krishnachandra'''''<nowiki/>''.'' <nowiki/>From that connection the place might be known as KRISHNAPUR. It is said that the holy idol of Radha-Krishna had been established here. Besides, the holy Brahmins used to live here which was responsible for KRISHNAPUR. |
* '''NATAGARH:''' Earlier this place had '''nine ''garhs''''' (forts); from which the place was known as NATAGARH. During the Mughal dynasty the local '''Bhuinyan''' or the Jaminders had built some short height forts for security purpose. In local language ''''NA'''<nowiki/>'''TA'''' <nowiki/>means ''''sh'''<nowiki/>'''ort''''.<nowiki/> Thus the place was named, short-heighten fort - NATAGARH. |
* '''GHOLA''': Earlier this place was connected with Ganges through canals.Passengers used to refresh themselves with drinks made of Curds, named ‘GHOL’. From it, place got its name |
* '''USHUMPUR''' : The name of this place USHUMPUR was taken from '''OSHMANPUR''', which was adopted from the name of the local Jaigirdar '''OSHMAN ALI KHAN'''. |
* '''TARAPUKUR''' : The name TARAPUKUR was taken from '''TARA SHAH''', who was the disciple of '''[[Abdul Qadir Gilani|Mohiuddin Kader Gilani]]''' of Persia ( modern day '''[[Iran]]'''). He used to live here, hence the place was known as TARAPUKURIA or TARAPUKUR. |

=== <u>[[Ardhanarishvara]] idol : recent archeological find</u> === |
<blockquote>An "[[Ardhanarishvara|Ardhnarishwar]]" [[Idolatry|idol]] of approximately '''4 and 1/2 feet''' was accidentally discovered at [http://wikimapia.org/14502500/PANCHANANTALA Panchanantala] of Sukchar ( Sodepur ) during ongoing digging for a new housing complex on Sep, 2012. The idol is estimated to be between '''9th - 13th century'''. These were interesting times in bengal, coinciding roughly an age of the diminishing [[Bengali Buddhists|bengali buddhist]] [[Pala Empire|Pala Dynasty]] and an emerging [[Bengali Hindus|bengali hindu]] [[Sena dynasty|Sena Dynasty]] - also coinciding with the advent of [[Bengali Muslims#Early explorers|early islam on bengal]] . This idol probably was lost in time during those turbelent centuries. The Idol is now partialy restored and kept in a local temple established recently, this is incredible as the idol saw daylight in almost '''1000 years''' and now receives daily [[Puja (Hinduism)|pujas]] from locals who regularly [[worship]] it. However detailed research on this accidental [[Archaeology|archeological find]] must be done and ideally all artifacts preserved. Also unfortanately there is not much mention in media about such major [[Archaeology|archeological find]] , based on which history of sodepore panihati area might have been re-written |

History of sodepore panihati would be incomplete without reference of her true son of soil : ত্রাণনাথ ব্যানার্জী / Trananath Bondopadhaya |
About 100 years ago religious contributor and great noble son of Panihati, Sri Trananath Bondopadhaya was the '''true maker of Panihati'''. His father was Nasiram Bondopadhaya. His second wife Uma Devi’s eighth child was Trananath Bondopadhaya. At the age of 6-7 his father died and at the age of 10 his mother Uma Devi passed away. In his childhood he studied in the Missionary School of Agarpara. At the age of 17 he started working at first in a sugar market of Dharmatala and thereafter in a jute press of Kashipur. During this period he went to Calcutta (now Kolkata) on foot regularly. After some days he got a job of clerk at Rally Brothers’ associated institution (Nasmith Press of Salkia). Gradually there he was appointed as the head clerk with the salary of 40 rupees. Later he started on small works as contractor. At last with the advice of Sir Anderson he began to take jute contracts. Thereafter he built up '''Pancharatna Temple''', '''steps in the banks of Ganges''', '''school''', '''crematorium''' in this area. === <u>Post partition history of Panihati Municipality</u> === |
With the [[Partition of Bengal (1947)|partition of Bengal]] in [[1947]], "millions of refugees poured in from [[East Pakistan]]." In the initial stages bulk of the refugees were non-agriculturists. A few of them made their own arrangements, but "it was squatters who made the [[East Bengali refugees]] famous or infamous." Squatting (''jabardakhal'' in Bengali) ranged from the forcible occupation of barracks to the collective take-over of private, government and waste land. "This happened as early as 1948 with middle class refugees in the [[Jadavpur#History|Jadavpur]] area: first on government land and then on private property, leading to violent clashes. Having won the battle, the elated squatters named their colony ‘Bijaygarh’, the Fort of Victory." By [[1949]], there were 40 such colonies in Jadavpur, Kasba, Santoshpur, Garia and Behala, in the south-eastern part of the city, and 65 in the Dum Dum and Panihati zone in the north. Subsequently squatters colonies also came up along the west bank of the Hooghly and by [[1950]], there were 150 such colonies. It has to be borne in mind that the squatters were in a way “self-settlers” in the absence of adequate official arrangements for rehabilitation. Within a very short time the refugees (quite often with government/ administrative support) not only found a place to stay but developed a society with markets, schools, temples and sometimes even colleges, hospitals and recreational centres. Efforts have been made in more recent years to regularise land/property rights in the refugee colonies. |
