Williams began work on the album in 2017, after the breakup between him and fellow country star Aldous Harding the previous year, writing all of the songs on the album in just one month. After pre-production occurred in his mother’s home in Lyttleton, Williams and his entourage of backing musicians, the widely acclaimed Yarra Benders, deployed themselves to Northern California, which was deemed appropriate to record in. This was because heroes of Williams, such as Cate Le Bon and Adam Green had worked there, alongside producer Noah Georgeson at the studio in the past. The recording was relatively quick, although Williams felt he needed to trim and lighten the long, moody songs he’d written previously. In the twelve days Williams recorded there, he felt like he was “stepping out of his comfort zone”, and exploring new opportunities in recording an ocean across from his home city of Christchurch. His breakup with Harding heavily influenced the album, with The Guardian describing it as a “lovely, miserable record” |

The album was released on February 8th, 2018, quickly topping the charts in New Zealand, and reached number 8 in Australia.
