Member schools of the GHSA make most decisions by appointing region representatives who vote on proposals in the GHSA Executive Committee. Individual decisions by regions are made by the schools in the region on such issues as region tiebreakers and hosting of region tournaments. Members are divided into seven classes by size and then further divided into regions based on geographic locations.

At least one prior organisation was integrated into the GHSA. The [[Georgia Interscholastic Association]] (GIA) was a school sports league in Georgia.<ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.ghsbp.com/gia/general.html#:~:text=The%20Georgia%20Interscholastic%20Association%20was,existed%20all%20over%20the%20state | title=GIA Heritage: General Information }}</ref> It was integrated into the GHSA in 1970.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.ghsa.net/giachamps|title=GIA Champions | GHSA.net|website=www.ghsa.net}}</ref>

The Big 7 Conference included large high schools for African American students in Georgia. The GIA was an expansion of this league that came include county high schools around the state.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.moultrieobserver.com/sports/local_sports/documentary-on-georgia-interscholastic-association-will-air-monday-on-gpb/article_b8e9d102-e9e3-11ec-8b63-4fe92f080662.html|title=Documentary on Georgia Interscholastic Association will air Monday on GPB|website=Moultrie Observer|date=11 June 2022 }}</ref>

''[[As If We Were Ghosts]]'' is a documentary film made about the GIA and its athletes.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.valdostadailytimes.com/news/as-if-we-were-ghosts-set-to-premiere-gia-documentary-to-air-twice-on-gpb/article_483635ec-eb26-11ec-bf00-d77372e6ae88.amp.html|title='As If We Were Ghosts' set to premiere: GIA documentary to air twice on GPB | News | valdostadailytimes.com|website=www.valdostadailytimes.com}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.tiftongazette.com/sports/gia-s-ghosts-brought-to-life-in-documentary/article_d1258866-ef46-11ec-84b8-27f2fb03002c.html|title=GIA's 'Ghosts' brought to life in documentary|first=Becky|last=Taylor|website=The Tifton Gazette|date=18 June 2022 }}</ref>

The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) is an organization that governs athletics and activities for member high schools in Georgia, USA. GHSA is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations. The association has 463 public and private high schools as members. GHSA organizes all sports and academic competitions as well as overseeing registration, training, and approves local area sports officials associations to administer regional athletics and activities per member schools.

Membership

[edit]

Membership to the GHSA is voluntary and open to every high school in the state of Georgia, although participating private schools must have at least 150 students in their high school.[1] Many private schools that do not enter the GHSA compete in the interscholastic organization of the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA).

History

[edit]

At least one prior organisation was integrated into the GHSA. The Georgia Interscholastic Association (GIA) was a school sports league in Georgia.[2] It was integrated into the GHSA in 1970.[3]

The Big 7 Conference included large high schools for African American students in Georgia. The GIA was an expansion of this league that came include county high schools around the state.[4]

As If We Were Ghosts is a documentary film made about the GIA and its athletes.[5][6]

Classifications – Regions

[edit]

The GHSA currently[when?] has six classes, AAAAAA, AAAAA, AAAA, AAA, AA, and A, (called "6A", 5A", "4A", "3A", "2A", and "1A") based on the schools' student population. Each class has eight regions, numbered 1 through 8, based on the geographic location of the schools involved. Region 1 of each class is usually the southernmost region, with the region numbers generally increasing as one moves north. Regions realign every two years. Regions generally have ten schools, but can range from 4 to 16 teams.[citation needed]

Class 5A was created for the 2000-2001 school year.[7][8] Class 6A was created for the 2012–2013 school year and Class 7A for the 2016–2017 school year to accommodate growth in local schools.[citation needed]

In late 2023, GHSA announced that they would be doing away with the "7A" classification for the 2024-2026 cycle. They have yet to state whether or not this will be a permanent change.[citation needed]

Competitions
