* Users who could cause more damage to the wikis if someone took over their account have to have more secure passwords. This includes administrators and other user groups. They can't use passwords that are in a list of common passwords. Accounts with common passwords are easy to take over. The list of common passwords was made longer a few weeks ago and has a different error message. Some user groups have been added to those who can't use common passwords. This is to protect all accounts with user rights that could cause damage. [https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/operations/mediawiki-config/+/481115/]

Latest '''[[m:Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News|tech news]]''' from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. [[m:Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News/2019/11|Translations]] are available.

'''Recent changes'''
* Pages can use [[:wikidata:Property:P625|geocoordinates]] from Wikidata with the <code>mw.wikibase.entity:formatStatements</code> [[w:Lua (programming language)|Lua]] function or the <code>#statements</code> [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Manual:Parser functions|parser function]]. If they do, they will now be shown using [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:Extension:Kartographer#<maplink>|a Kartographer <code><maplink></code>]] if the wiki can use Kartographer. You can report bugs or ask questions [[phab:T210926|on Phabricator]].
* There is now an [[:wikitech:EventStreams|EventStream]] to see when [https://stream.wikimedia.org/?doc#!/Streams/get_v2_stream_page_links_change links are added or removed] on Wikimedia wikis. You can read the [[phab:T115119|discussions and plans]].

'''Problems'''
* Some wikis will not be able to edit for a short period of time on 19 March ([[:w:en:Coordinated Universal Time|UTC]]). This will start at [https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20190319T15 15:00 UTC]. It will last up to 15 minutes but probably shorter. You can [[phab:T217441|see the list of affected wikis]]. This is because of network maintenance. You can still read the wikis.
* Editors who use Firefox to edit with the visual editor had a problem with copying text. When they tried to select text that included footnotes, templates or block images in the middle they would often only get part of the text. This has now been fixed. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T214976]
* Some maps didn't work for a while on 8 March. This has been fixed. [https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Incident_documentation/20190308-wdqs][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T217898]

[[File:Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg|right|120px]]

Hello {{BASEPAGENAME}},

;News
*The WMF [https://wikimediafoundation.org/2019/01/09/you-can-now-use-google-translate-to-translate-articles-on-wikipedia/ has announced] that Google Translate is now available for translating articles through the [[Wikipedia:Content translation tool|content translation tool]]. This may result in an increase in [[WP:MACHINETRANSLATION|machine translated]] articles in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to use the {{tp|rough translation}} tag and gently remind (or inform) editors that translations from other language Wikipedia pages still require attribution per [[WP:TFOLWP]].

;Discussions of interest
*Two elements of [[Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#G6._Technical_deletions|CSD G6]] have been split into their own criteria: [[Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#R4._File_namespace_redirects_with_names_that_match_Wikimedia_Commons_pages|R4]] for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons ([[Wikipedia_talk:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion/Archive_72#Redirects_in_the_File:_namespace_G6_→_R4|Discussion]]), and [[Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#G14._Unnecessary_disambiguation_pages|G14]] for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page ([[Wikipedia_talk:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion/Archive_72#Proposal:_Move_deletion_of_disambiguation_pages_from_G6_→_G14|Discussion]]).
*{{tl|db-blankdraft}} was merged into [[WP:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#G13._Abandoned_Drafts_and_Articles_for_creation_submissions|G13]] ([[Wikipedia_talk:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion/Archive_72#Proposal_to_merge_db-blankdraft_into_G13|Discussion]])
*[[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)#Notability_of_theatrical_plays|A discussion]] recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for [[Wikipedia:WikiProject_Theatre/Draft_guideline_on_Notability_(plays)|theatrical plays]].
*There is an [[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Notability_(scientific_subjects)|ongoing discussion]] on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for [[Wikipedia:Notability_(chemicals)|chemicals]] and [[Wikipedia:Notability (taxons)|organism taxa]].

;Reminders
*NPR is not a binary ''keep'' / ''delete'' process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The [[WP:ATD-R|'''deletion policy''']] and its associated [[WP:BLAR|guideline]] clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See [[Template:R_from_school|a classic example]] of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the [[Template:R template index|R template index]]. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.

;NPP Tools Report
* [[User:Bradv/Scripts/Superlinks|Superlinks]] – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
* [[User:FR30799386/copyvio-check|copyvio-check]] – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
*The [[:File:NPP_flowchart.svg|NPP flowchart]] now has clickable hyperlinks.

'''Recent changes'''
* The [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Content translation/V2|new version of the content translation tool]] will be used for all new translations. The older version will still be used for translations that were started with it. Most users won’t see any change. More than 80% of the published translations are already using the new version. '''Problems'''
* There was a problem with editing with [[:w:en:Safari (web browser)|Safari]] on [[:w:en:IOS|iOS]]. When you wrote an edit summary you couldn't save the edit. This has now been fixed. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T218352]
* The editing toolbar sometimes disappears when you scroll on [[:w:en:IOS|iOS]] devices. This will be fixed soon. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T218414]
* Wikis can [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:System message|over-ride interface messages]] on-wiki. A problem meant that sometimes an old versions of any changed messages were shown instead. This included the sitenotice and other important parts of the interface. This was fixed at around 2019-03-22 16:00 (UTC). Logged-out users may still get the wrong message. '''Recent changes'''
* More wikis are now testing visual editor section editing for mobile users. You can [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/VisualEditor on mobile/Section editing|read more]].
* Admins on French and Polish Wikipedia can [[m:Community health initiative/Partial blocks|block someone from editing a page or a namespace]]. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T219327][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T219218]

'''Problems'''
* You will be able read but not edit most wikis for 30 minutes on [https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20190411T05 11 April at 05:00 (UTC)]. This is because of a hardware problem. You can [[phab:T220080|see a list of the affected wikis]]. [https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2019-April/091900.html]
* A map update caused some problems on 29 March and 30 March. It was rolled back. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T217087]
* Pages on some Wikivoyages had problems with the top headline. This has been fixed. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T97891#5079408]

'''Changes later this week'''
* When you add an edit summary the VisualEditor will search your recent edit summaries in case you want to re-use one. This works in both the [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:VisualEditor/User guide|visual]] and [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/2017 wikitext editor|wikitext]] modes on desktop. It also works [[mw:VisualEditor on mobile|on the mobile site]]. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T50274]

* [[File:Octicons-tools.svg|15px|link=|Advanced item]] The <code><nowiki>{{REVISIONID}}</nowiki></code> magic word will no longer work. This is for performance reasons. When you preview a page it will return <code>""</code> (empty string). When you read a page it will return <code>"-"</code> (dash). For now this will only affect content namespaces. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T137900]
* [[File:Octicons-sync.svg|12px|link=|Recurrent item]] The [[mw:MediaWiki 1.33/wmf.25|new version]] of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April ([[mw:MediaWiki 1.33/Roadmap|calendar]]).

'''Future changes'''
* You will be able to preview references. This means that when you hover over the link you will get a popup that shows you a preview of the reference. It will work much like [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Page Previews|page previews]]. This is so you don't have to go to the bottom of the page to see a reference. This will now be available as a beta feature on German and Arabic Wikipedia. [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WMDE_Technical_Wishes/ReferencePreviews][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T67114]
* [[File:Octicons-tools.svg|15px|link=|Advanced item]] The Wikidata [[:w:en:JSON|JSON]] output will change. Empty containers will be serialised as empty objects. This is a breaking change that will affect tools that use JSON outputs and APIs. It will happen on 30 April. == About Yamaha Motor Racing ==

Hi,

it's been the umpteenth time that people have reverted the Yamaha Motor Racing nationality. To be precise the team is Italian, is based in Italy and has an Italian staff. Yamaha chose the team as the constructor's team and therefore they entered in a partnership (it still doesn't make it Japanese, though). The legal name is "Yamaha Motor Racing s.r.l." and it's based Gerno di Lesmo, Italy.

I tried to change the flag many times, but people were reverting it, so that I added the two flags, but you came along.

Please let me know if I am missing anything otherwise, please leave the team as Italian/Japanese.

Thanks, [[User:Andiii|Andiii]] ([[User talk:Andiii|talk]]) 08:46, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

'''Recent changes'''
* You can now write all special letters in all African Wikipedia languages. This works in the desktop version. [https://aharoni.wordpress.com/2019/05/25/happy-africa-day-keyboards-for-all-african-wikipedia-languages/]
* There is now a field called <code>[[:c:Commons:Depicts|depicts]]</code> on Commons. This is a way to show what is in a picture with the help of Wikidata. It is still in development. [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Adding_qualifiers_to_Depicts]
* Some tools on Toolforge may break on or after 3 June because of database changes. Maintainers should update their tools to use the new schema. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T223406][https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/cloud-announce/2019-May/000172.html]

'''Changes later this week'''
* Some wikis have one tab for the visual editor and one tab for a wikitext editor. Others wikis just have one tab. If your wiki has two tabs, clicking a link to create a new page has always opened a wikitext editor. It will now open the editor you used the last time you edited. * [[File:Octicons-sync.svg|12px|link=|Recurrent item]] The [[mw:MediaWiki 1.34/wmf.8|new version]] of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 May. It will be on all wikis from 6 May ([[mw:MediaWiki 1.34/Roadmap|calendar]]).

You can customize which criteria receive notifications in your [[Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences#twinkle-config-section-8|Twinkle preferences]]: look for ''Notify page creator when deleting under these criteria''.
:*Twinkle's d-batch (batch delete) feature now supports deleting subpages (and related redirects and talk pages) of each page. The pages will be listed first but use with caution! The und-batch (batch undelete) option can now also restore talk pages.

<div style="border:2px solid #90C0FF; background:#F0F0FF; width:99%; padding:4px">

[[File:Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg|right|120px]]

Hello {{BASEPAGENAME}},

;WMF at work on NPP Improvements
More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at [[WT:NPR|NPR]]. There is now also a live queue of [[WP:AfC|AfC]] submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.
;QUALITY of REVIEWING
Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please [[quis custodiet ipsos custodes|be on the alert]] for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors.
The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at [[WT:NPR|NPR]].
;Backlog
The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.
;Move to draft
NPR is [[triage]], it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which ''might'' have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.
;Notifying users
Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are [[WP:SPA|SPA]] and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.
;PERM
Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome ''if <u>absolutely</u> necessary'', but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.
;Other news
School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at [[Wikipedia:New_pages_patrol/Coordination#New_Page_Review_Coordinators|New Page Review Coordinators]] - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

== Re: [[Ang Probinsyano (season 7)]] ==

Good day [[User:Babymissfortune]]!

I am leaving you this message to ask gor help in restoring [[Ang Probinsyano (season 7)]] back to its original state before the snafu committed by [[User:Albe23413]]. In the user's overzealousness to create a non-existent Season 8 to the show, which is not backed by any sources, the said page was renamed multiple times, first Ang Probinsyano (Season 7), then Ang Probinsyano (season 8) and now the grossly inaccurate Ang Probinsyano (season 1000).

I have tried moving it back to [[Ang Probinsyano (season 7)]] but the numerous attempts by [[User:Albe23413]] bars me from doing so. That is why I am seeking your help in restoring order in that page. If possible, have [[User:Albe23413]] explain why he or she did what was done and sanction him or her should the explanation less than satisfactory.

Warmest regards. [[User:Gardo Versace|Gardo Versace]] ([[User talk:Gardo Versace|talk]]) 10:14, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

==

Update:

[[User:Albe23413]] moved the article again, this time renaming it [[Ang Probinsyano (Season 7)]]. The effect of it however, is that the same was disconnected from [[Ang Probinsyano (season 6)]]. Once you press the latter, you won't get a link back to the former. I implore your help in moving [[Ang Probinsyano (Season 7)]] back to [[Ang Probinsyano (season 6)]].

I'd also like to point out that [[User:Albe23413]] also did some edits over at [[Ang Probinsyano (season 5)]] where said user deliberately changed some episode titles to innacurate ones and then reverted said edits back. It can be inferred that said user did the same to raise his edit count so that he can fast-track himself to becoming an auto-confirmed user. If it is possible, I suggest that he be prevented from editing [[Ang Probinsyano]] and its related articles as before this incident, he was also engaged in edit-warring with yours truly.

Warmest regards.

Administrators' newsletter – January 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

re-edited Raid (2018) movie page

The word "crores" is not commonly known to readers of English (at least, not to most of such readers outside of India and Pakistan who do not know Hindi or Urdu), but it's obvious from context that it means a large number (of units of money). My insertion of the parenthetical "(tens of millions)" was intended merely to allay the jarring effect of encountering an unfamiliar foreign word in an English sentence, without further disrupting the flow of the synopsis by inclusion of further distractants.

In response to your elision of that insertion, I re-instated it, adding wikilink brackets around the word "crores" to reference the wikipedia article, and copying the Encyclopedia Britannica citation from that article.

I suppose I could have included a reference to the wiktionary etymology: Hindi करोड़ (karoṛ) and Urdu کروڑ‎ (karoṛ), from Sanskrit कोटि (koṭi), but that would in my view have been a trifle sarcastic.

Thanks for your courteous message.

American men's basketball players

I see that you have been adding Category:American men's basketball players via AWB. I noticed that you added the category to Alfred Aboya, but I see no indication that he is American (unless I am missing something?) Perhaps it's a one-off error. Otherwise, it's just a minor tweak in your AWB algorithm. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 08:54, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Bagumba Yes, it is an error. I am adding cats for a while now and that's why I overlooked the page and clicked "Save". Thanks for noticing and reverting. Babymissfortune 10:25, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Blks

Hi , I have changed quite a few "Blks" in basketball articles. So you can revert if you like. But if you want to do so can you please add the meaning of "Blks" to wiktionary here? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 04:31, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Quick note... not vand

This was probably not vandalism; although I can fully understand why you reverted the edit (and I might too have made the same mistake). But leaving the note as I've now allowed the editor's request to be incorporated in the article, post their note at the Help desk. Thanks, Lourdes 07:10, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

@Lourdes: Thanks for noticing. It was supposed to be an AGF revert instead of a vandalism rv, but I clicked the wrong button. Babymissfortune 07:13, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

I don't care who you are. If anything before you removed my edit just like you sent a message telling me you took it down. You could have sent a message telling me to add a citation. Btw the rule set you sent said I didn't really need to reference anything. If you want to know my source. I am my source. (talk page stalker) Instead of accusing other editors of "foolishness" and "trash," try actually understanding the policies and guidelines first. Wikipedia is not for things made up one day. Verifiability is a policy, and unless you can provide a reliable source, the edit in question does not belong on this encyclopedia. --Kinu t/c 18:06, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

MOS:DATEFORMAT / professional boxing record tables

Greetings. Would it be possible for you to tweak the script so that it leaves a specific section untouched? I ask because of edits like this, specifically in the Professional boxing record section, where the existing three-letter months become fully spelled months due to the script making a blanket edit to convert all date formats within the article to the same one. MOS:BOXING/RECORD has used three-letter months since its inception, so it would be helpful if that format could be retained whilst the script goes over the rest of the article. Identity verification service

Hi, just wanted to ask if you could go a little slower when reverting vandalism; this edit doesn't look like a test or vandalism, and it ended up confusing the user. I'm not objecting to reversion per se, especially as the editor's comments at WP:HD make it sound like original research; I'm just asking that you use some handwritten summary (maybe even "undo unsourced addition"?) instead of treating it as a test or vandalism.

I've seen your "This user is currently feeling discouraged" box, and I'm doing my best to be non-confrontational. I hope this isn't coming across as such; it's meant as "hey, could you do the same thing a bit differently next time", not "you were wrong". Nyttend (talk) 22:12, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

NPR Newsletter No.17

Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

About Yamaha Motor Racing

Hi,

it's been the umpteenth time that people have reverted the Yamaha Motor Racing nationality.

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

  • An RfC on WT:RfA concluded that Requests for adminship and bureaucratship are discussions seeking to build consensus.

Technical news

  • The CSD feature of Twinkle now allows admins to notify page creators of deletion if the page had not been tagged. The default behavior matches that of tagging notifications, and replaces the ability to open the user talk page upon deletion. You can customize which criteria receive notifications in your Twinkle preferences: look for Notify page creator when deleting under these criteria.
  • Twinkle's d-batch (batch delete) feature now supports deleting subpages (and related redirects and talk pages) of each page. The pages will be listed first but use with caution! The und-batch (batch undelete) option can now also restore talk pages.

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:38, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

Good day User:Babymissfortune!

I am leaving you this message to ask gor help in restoring Ang Probinsyano (season 7) back to its original state before the snafu committed by User:Albe23413.

I have tried moving it back to Ang Probinsyano (season 7) but the numerous attempts by User:Albe23413 bars me from doing so. That is why I am seeking your help in restoring order in that page. If possible, have User:Albe23413 explain why he or she did what was done and sanction him or her should the explanation less than satisfactory.

Warmest regards. Gardo Versace (talk) 10:14, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

==

Update:

User:Albe23413 moved the article again, this time renaming it Ang Probinsyano (Season 7). The effect of it however, is that the same was disconnected from Ang Probinsyano (season 6). Once you press the latter, you won't get a link back to the former. I implore your help in moving Ang Probinsyano (Season 7) back to Ang Probinsyano (season 6).

I'd also like to point out that User:Albe23413 also did some edits over at Ang Probinsyano (season 5) where said user deliberately changed some episode titles to innacurate ones and then reverted said edits back. It can be inferred that said user did the same to raise his edit count so that he can fast-track himself to becoming an auto-confirmed user. If it is possible, I suggest that he be prevented from editing Ang Probinsyano and its related articles as before this incident, he was also engaged in edit-warring with yours truly.

Warmest regards.
