Sucre is one of the 11 municipalities (municipios) that makes up the Venezuelan state of Bolívar and, according to the 2011 census by the National Institute of Statistics of Venezuela, the municipality has a population of 20,359.[1] The town of Maripa is the shire town of the Sucre Municipality.[citation needed]

The municipality is one of several in Venezuela named "Sucre Municipality" in honour of Venezuelan independence hero Antonio José de Sucre.

This amounts to 1.8% of the state's population. The municipality's population density is 0.59 inhabitants per square kilometre (1.5/sq mi).[citation needed]
