Each adopted the costume and code-name of Trident, and each was armed with a powerful trident. The weapon had three tines: the right tine shot fire, the left tine shot ice, and the center tine released a blast of devastating force. Trident operated in New York City, each criminal taking turns at committing several large robberies. It was believed that Trident was only one person. Eventually, the Sammy Jaye version Trident tried to cheat his two partners out of their share of loot. The other two killed Sammy, and his costumed body was discovered by the New Teen Titans. Trident is the name of several supervillains appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics.

Publication history

The Trident Trio first appeared in New Teen Titans #33 (July 1983), and were created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. Wolfman later acknowledged that he recycled the idea of different people posing as a single villain from the Brothers Grimm.[1]

Fictional character biography

Trident is the alter ego of three former H.I.V.E. operatives: weapons designer Prof, enforcer Sammy Jaye, and an unidentified black man and former boxer. They take turns committing robberies, making the public believe that they are a single person. Eventually, Jaye tries to cheat his partners out of profits, after which they kill him before being defeated by the Teen Titans.[2][3]

In Infinite Crisis, Trident joins Alexander Luthor Jr.'s Secret Society of Super Villains.[4]

The name Trident was also used by a Starro-infected Karate Kid.[5]
