It just so happened that the ''Nepenthaceae'' images were uploaded in two large batches, the bulk of which were still around as fair use, so I checked the deleted contributions for those uploaders.

:I'll take a look at that page! There are certainly synergies among the various efforts to find and retag 1923-63 PD files, especially the deleted ones. Deletions of old images tagged as fair use can be hard to track down, including F5, PROD, and FFD nominations that don't mention years. My name is Jonathan Obar [[user:Jaobar]], I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community[[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. So a few things about the interviews:

:I'm not going to take a position right now on whether [[Culture of Somaliland]] should have its own article. However, a closer look at the history makes it clear that [[WP:A10]] does not apply here. I created the page in 2005 (not recently) and its [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Culture_of_Somaliland&diff=next&oldid=97354678 first version as an article] was written in 2006. Furthermore, the article is a plausible redirect to [[Culture of Somalia]], like my first version was. Please use the talk page or a forum like [[WP:AFD]] to discuss this article, rather than CSD. It's been a very longtime since I had any of this influence but when I was growing up my dad made a mix of Japanese and Hawaiian dishes but he would not generally eat raw fish. I remember now what he was trying to tell me, years ago, about the differences between Hawaiian raw fish and Japanese raw fish but it wasn't until I saw this in a source from our article that I got it. It's more than the ingredients but the preparation of the fish itself and the way it is diced. Hawaiian "style" poke is prepared differently than Japanese sashimi. Dad was part Japanese and I was actually born in Japan then moved to Hawaii but I was never fond of either Hawaiian or Japanese food growing up. My brother liked poi and I was the only kid that could use chopsticks but I copied my dad eating rice when I was a toddler. For example, posters by [[:Category:Film posters by Josef Fenneker|Josef Fenneker]] are in copyright in Germany until 2027 because Fenneker died in 1956 (per [[c:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany]]). But it's often hard to tell who the artist is. The artist's signature may be present but hard to read.

The problem is that Commons doesn't allow non-free use, so you have to move the logos to English Wikipedia. This process is pretty simple, but you have to ask for it explicitly; see [[c:Commons:Undeletion requests#To allow transfer of fair use content to another project]]. Once the transfer is approved, you need to move quickly to transfer the images and get the rationales added. (You might find [[Template:Non-free use rationale logo]] helpful.)
:[[:File:JeetKuneDo.svg]] was kept because it's [[c:COM:TOO US|too simple for copyright]]. Commons can be stubborn sometimes, so even if you think an image is too simple for copyright, it can be hard to convince others. In the case of JeetKuneDo.svg, they could point to a letter from the US Copyright Office stating that the logo is too simple. For your images (assuming you don't have such a letter) it'll be harder. @Sj: happy PD Day to you! I start by searching FFD, PUF, and fair use images (some of my methods are listed at User:Wikiacc/Public Domain Day) but it's mostly luck. It just so happened that the Nepenthaceae images were uploaded in two large batches, the bulk of which were still around as fair use, so I checked the deleted contributions for those uploaders.
I'll take a look at that page! There are certainly synergies among the various efforts to find and retag 1923-63 PD files, especially the deleted ones. Deletions of old images tagged as fair use can be hard to track down, including F5, PROD, and FFD nominations that don't mention years. Wikiacc () 19:35, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Maher27777: For new uploads, absolutely! But when the full-size image is already in the Wikipedia file history, I find it easiest to restore the full-size version first, and then move to Commons via established tools. Do you agree? Wikiacc () 21:26, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PD question

@Wiiformii: it's complicated. Honestly, most of the time I just tag {{PD-US-expired-abroad}} and move on.
Many movie posters from that era were made by artists. In that case, the source country copyright is based on the death of the artist. For example, posters by Josef Fenneker are in copyright in Germany until 2027 because Fenneker died in 1956 (per c:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany). But it's often hard to tell who the artist is. The artist's signature may be present but hard to read.
If the poster is a still image from the movie, with no other artistic elements, you are probably safe using the death of the director. But you have to look carefully. Wikiacc () 23:38, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Users wishing to permanently leave may now request "vanishing" via Special:GlobalVanishRequest. Processed requests will result in the user being renamed, their recovery email being removed, and their account being globally locked.

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment.
