He was a chairperson in Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 2015 to 2013. Also, he was a professor at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (1979-2004).
He is an author and co-author of more than twenty-five books and monographs, about one hundred and fifty academic articles, and three hundred published papers delivered at specialist science conferences. So far he has been a dissertation supervisor of more than forty doctorate theses. His major is reliability theory and its application in structural engineering.

He is an author of Reliability of Structures and a pioneer in the field of [[structural reliability]]
