Usage

This page is intended to serve as instructions for the use of the banner template {{WikiProject Cities}}.

Optional parameters

• class – valid values are listed in the custom class mask. See the project's quality scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave |class= blank or omit the parameter.
• attention – set |attention=yes if the article needs immediate attention from experienced editors. Use only if another parameter does not cover the need for attention; this should be used sparingly. It is strongly encouraged to also add a section to the talk page explaining what needs attention.
  • This parameter populates Category:WikiProject Cities articles needing attention.
• needs-infobox – set |needs-infobox=yes if the article needs an infobox. Remember that infoboxes are not suitable for all articles, and can overwhelm short articles.
  • This parameter populates Category:WikiProject Cities articles needing infoboxes.
• needs-image – set |needs-image=yes if the article needs an image (other than a map).
• imagedetails (appears only if needs-image is set to yes) - Additional details to describe the image that is requested.
• in - Used in conjunction with the needs-image parameter to place the image request into a specific location category. Leave blank or delete if not.
  • Additional in2 and in3 - Used in conjunction with the needs-image parameter to specify up to two more location categories.
  • This parameter populates Category:Wikipedia requested images of cities.
• needs-map – set |needs-map=yes if the article needs a map.
• in - Used in conjunction with the needs-map parameter to place the map request into a specific location category. Leave blank or delete if not.
  • Additional in2 and in3 - Used in conjunction with the needs-map parameter to specify up to two more location categories.
  • This parameter populates Category:Wikipedia requested maps.
• unref – set |unref=yes if the article lacks sufficient references and/or adequate inline citations.
  • This parameter populates Category:Articles lacking sources.
• needs-geocoord – set |needs-geocoord=yes if the article lacks geocoordinate data.
• in - Used in conjunction with the needs-geocoord parameter to place the geocoordinate request into a specific location category. Leave blank or delete if not.
  • Additional in2 and in3 - Used in conjunction with the needs-geocoord parameter to specify up to two more location categories.
  • This parameter populates Category:Unclassified articles missing geocoordinate data.
• core – set |core=yes if the article is supported by the Core task force.
  • This parameter populates Category:WikiProject Cities core articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:WikiProject Cities core articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
• capital – set |capital=yes if the article is supported by the National capitals task force.
  • This parameter populates Category:WikiProject Cities national capital articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:WikiProject Cities national capital articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
• regional_capital – set |regional_capital=yes if the article is supported by the Regional capitals task force.
  • This parameter populates Category:WikiProject Cities regional capital articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:WikiProject Cities regional capital articles by quality based upon the |class= parameter.
• listas – This parameter, which is the equivalent of the DEFAULTSORT sortkey that should be placed on all biographical articles, is a sortkey for the article talk page (e.g. for Christopher Wren, use |listas=Wren, Christopher so that the talk page will show up in the W's and not the C's of the various assessment and administrative categories). This is important because it is one source used by those who set DEFAULTSORT on the article; consider also setting the DEFAULTSORT for the article when setting this parameter.   If the article is using {{WikiProject banner shell}} then it is preferable to add |listas= to that template instead of a project banner template. Putting the parameter on more than one template is not required.
• category – set |category=no if, and only if, a banner is being used for demonstration or testing purposes, to prevent unnecessary or undesirable categorization. Otherwise, omit this parameter.
