Working with new articles
This page has tools for finding, assessing, and improving articles within the scope of WP:LGBT.
Creating articles
Creating an article requires research to determine if there is significant coverage of the subject in reliable sources. See WP:Notability, including the general notability guideline, for more information. The WP:Articles for creation process is recommended for editors new to article creation.

There are several possible sources for new article subjects.
Things you can do
* At WP:Requested articles, people can suggest topics for new articles:
A lot of people join the project and want to help, but don't really know how. Here's a list of tasks that either need regular attention or fulfill the goals of our project:
** Requested articles on LGBTQ topics

** Requested articles on LGBTQ people
LGBT studies
* There are automatically updated lists of LGBTQ+ people in Wikidata that do not have articles on Wikipedia: LGBQ, trans women, trans men, non-binary, intersex
Some other ways to help out:
* See also intersex-related redlinks, Wiki Loves Pride/Tasks, and topics about LGBT.
* Submit an article to Jumpaclass and see how much you can improve it in seven days.
* :Category:Draft-Class LGBTQ+ studies articles contains draft articles currently in development. With expansion and additional sources, these could be put forward for WP:AFC review to become full articles.
* Submit newly created articles to WP:DYK on their authors' behalf.
* Check out the category of LGBT studies redlink lists
* Add to our list of resources.
* Work on our list of Core Topics - we are compiling core articles from which we can create some kind of publication.
* To propose new major tasks or task forces, feel free to post at the project talk page.

Newly created articles that deal with LGBTQ+ topics should have the WP:LGBTQ+ project banner added to the talk page. If you are unsure whether an article should be added to the project, raise it for discussion at WT:LGBTQ+.
One of the main tasks of the LGBT WikiProject is to assess the quality of Wikipedia's LGBT articles. The resulting article ratings are used within the project to help in recognising excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work. They also play a role in the WP:1.0 program, which the WikiProject uses to help automate some of the assessing process.

Improving navigation
The assessment is done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the LGBTProject template banner; this causes the articles to be placed into the appropriate sub-categories of :Category:LGBT articles by quality, which serve as the foundation for an automatically generated worklist. WP:1.0 also produces a statistics page, and a log of articles assessed.
There are several ways to make it easier for readers to find new articles.
*New articles should be placed in appropriate LGBTQ categories, to group related topics together. See WP:CAT for more. WP:BLPCAT and WP:EGRS provide important guidance on categorizing articles about people.
*Navigational templates for LGBTQ topics can be added to articles, creating links between all articles with the template.
*New and expanded articles can be submitted to WP:Did you know, and if selected will be featured on the Main Page.

Assessing articles
To find out more, see the /Assessment page.

WP:LGBTQ+/Assessment
Assessing article quality helps WP:LGBTQ+ members to recognize excellent contributions and identify topics in need of further work. They also play a role in the WP:1.0 program, which the WikiProject uses to help automate some of the assessing process.
*When the WikiProject LGBTQ+ studies banner is added to an article without an assessment parameter specified in the WikiProject Banner Shell, the article will be placed in :Category:Unassessed LGBTQ+ studies articles.
*Once an editor has assessed the article and completed the assessment parameter, the article will be added to the appropriate sub-category of :Category:LGBTQ+ studies articles by quality. These categories are used to generate reports like the quality table in this section.
*The LGBTQ+ studies articles by quality log lists articles that have been assessed, reassessed, moved, or removed from the project's scope in the past week.

Improving articles
Community department
There are several ways to find articles for improvement.
The Community Department of the LGBT WikiProject is a centralised place to develop ways of fostering a sense of community and belonging in all our members, and to recruit more people into our community. Editors who are happy and have support when they need it are more likely to work harder at improving articles than if they feel no-one cares.

* WP:LGBTQ+/Core lists articles that are of fundamental importance to WP:LGBTQ+'s mandate.
To achieve this, we currently have:
* WP:LGBTQ+/Vital lists in-scope articles that have been identified as among the most important on Wikipedia. See WP:VA for more information.
* WP:LGBTQ+/Popular lists the 500 highest traffic articles within WP:LGBT.
* There is a Report of all WP:LGBTQ+ articles with maintenance tags. Addressing these issues can help articles maintain or improve their quality rating.
* Use the quality table to pick an article from one class and work to get it to a higher class.
* Review former featured articles and former good articles that have been demoted, and work to restore their status.

If you have worked to bring an article into good shape and want feedback on further improvements, you can request a peer review.
* A successful recruiting program to headhunt helpful contributors to the Wikipedia.
* A welcome template to inform new members of aspects of the WikiProject and where they can go for help.
* A newsletter to keep members up to date with all the latest news from the WikiProject
* A quilt in which every member has their own patch to place whatever they want.

Watching articles
Any other ideas are welcome! Please propose them on the main talkpage.
You can help maintain the quality of LGBTQ+ content on Wikipedia by reviewing recent edits and joining active discussions.
*WP:LGBTQ+/Alerts reports on featured articles, proposed deletions and moves, and requests for comment on articles in WP:LGBTQ+.
*WP:LGBTQ+/Watchlist identifies articles that may attract controversy or vandalism. Anyone who comes across contentious or frequently vandalised article is welcome to add to it. Review recent changes to WP:LGBT Watchlist articles.
*See current talk page discussions for all articles in WP:LGBTQ+.
*Particpate in deletion discussions for sexuality and gender articles nominated for deletion.

As awareness of us grows, WikiProject LGBT studies has been featured in an increasing number of external sources; a list of these is maintained here. There is also a for anyone interested in drumming up some publicity (or just showing off).

Jumpaclass
Jumpaclass is a fun semi-competition that the LGBT WikiProject runs to improve the quality of lower-quality articles. There are many processes for higher quality articles, such as Peer review and FAC, but many stubs and start rated articles languish unedited for lack of interest. Jumpaclass is a unique attempt to correct that.

To enter, find an article you would like to improve from the list of assessed LGBT articles: you can choose Stub, Start, or B class articles. You then have seven days to improve the article. If within a week, you "jump" an article one or more assessment classes, you win points that are noted on a leadership board. Check Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies/Jumpaclass for all the details. Challenge a friend to go "head to head" with you and see who can jump their article the furthest!

Peer review
The LGBT WikiProject peer review articles on request. This is to encourage better articles by having contributors who may not have worked on articles to examine them and provide ideas for further improvement. The process is highly flexible and can deal with articles of any quality though requesting reviews on very short articles may not be productive as there is little for readers to comment on. This process is not an academic peer review by a group of experts in a particular subject, and articles that undergo this process should not be assumed to have greater authority than any other.

To learn more about our peer review system, see Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies/Peer review.

Watchlist
The WikiProject maintains two watchlists: one for controversial LGBT articles, one for all articles tagged as within our scope.

The main Watchlist is here. Anyone who comes across contentious or highly vandalised article is welcome to add to it. The Watchall list may be found here. It lists every article tagged by us, and may also be helpful if a normal alphabetical list is needed. It is updated automatically by bot, so manual changes are not required.

The User WikiProject LGBT studies member userbox (example below) contains links to both watchlists, as well as a link to all changes on article talk pages tagged by this project.

This page has tools for finding, assessing, and improving articles within the scope of WP:LGBTQ+.

Working with new articles

[edit]

Creating articles

[edit]

Creating an article requires research to determine if there is significant coverage of the subject in reliable sources. See WP:Notability, including the general notability guideline, for more information. The WP:Articles for creation process is recommended for editors new to article creation.

There are several possible sources for new article subjects.

Project-tagging

[edit]

Newly created articles that deal with LGBTQ+ topics should have the WP:LGBTQ+ project banner added to the talk page. If you are unsure whether an article should be added to the project, raise it for discussion at WT:LGBTQ+.

Improving navigation

[edit]

There are several ways to make it easier for readers to find new articles.

 • New articles should be placed in appropriate LGBTQ categories, to group related topics together. See WP:CAT for more. WP:BLPCAT and WP:EGRS provide important guidance on categorizing articles about people.
 • Navigational templates for LGBTQ topics can be added to articles, creating links between all articles with the template.
 • New and expanded articles can be submitted to WP:Did you know, and if selected will be featured on the Main Page.

Assessing articles

[edit]

Assessing article quality helps WP:LGBTQ+ members to recognize excellent contributions and identify topics in need of further work. They also play a role in the WP:1.0 program, which the WikiProject uses to help automate some of the assessing process.

Improving articles

[edit]

There are several ways to find articles for improvement.

If you have worked to bring an article into good shape and want feedback on further improvements, you can request a peer review.

Watching articles

[edit]

You can help maintain the quality of LGBTQ+ content on Wikipedia by reviewing recent edits and joining active discussions.
