== I need to remove my ip address ==
Hi,

I recently created a draft titled "Draft:Shay Albert Vidas," but it was deleted under G11 for being promotional. I understand the concerns and would like to request that the draft be restored to my user page so I can revise it further.
I didnt realize that my ip address would be published when I edited an article. I am a new user. [[User:Marvmish|Marvmish]] ([[User talk:Marvmish|talk]]) 01:58, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

I plan to rewrite the content to meet Wikipedia’s neutrality and notability standards. Unfortunately, I cannot contact the deleting administrator, Bbb23, directly as their talk page is restricted, and I’m unable to post in the Administrators’ Noticeboard because it is semi-protected.
:{{ping|Marvmish}} see [[Wikipedia:Oversight/FAQ#How to request suppression]] for how to request that. [[User:TSventon|TSventon]] ([[User talk:TSventon|talk]]) 02:12, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
::Thanks! [[User:Marvmish|Marvmish]] ([[User talk:Marvmish|talk]]) 02:40, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could assist me in restoring the draft to my user page or guide me on how to proceed.
== Proper capitalization for title of reference with capitalized by H1 tag. ==

Thank you for your time and help!
I'm working on [[DECA (organization)]] and have been trying to track down when the Collegiate Division of DECA stopped being referred to as Delta Epsilon Chi. I walked my way through archive.org until I found https://web.archive.org/web/20100708034614/http://deca.org/news/14/ . Clearly a press release, I thought the title of the reference should be the header of the Press Release, shown on the page as DECA ANNOUNCES EXPANDED FOCUS AND PROGRAMS; NEW MISSION. However, when I did a copy/paste, it pasted as DECA announces expanded focus and programs; new mission . When I went to the source of the web page, it appears to be in all capital letters because it is in an <nowiki><h1></h1></nowiki> pairing. So should the title for the reference be in ALL CAPS or not? (And I'm coming to the help desk because I have *no* idea where else makes sense to ask?)[[User:Naraht|Naraht]] ([[User talk:Naraht|talk]]) 02:30, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Best regards,
:[[User:Naraht|Naraht]] there's normally no reason to look at the HTML of a web page that's a putative source for an article. Whatever the means by which the browser shows (shouts) "DECA ANNOUNCES EXPANDED FOCUS AND PROGRAMS; NEW MISSION", please ignore the shouty caps --just as you'd ignore the color if this weren't black, the typeface, centring, etc. Render it as either "DECA Announces Expanded Focus and Programs; New Mission" or (my preference by far) "DECA announces expanded focus and programs; new mission". Incidentally, the H1 tag does not capitalize in any browser I've encountered, though CSS may cause it to do so. -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 07:03, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

:In your second and so far final edit to this, [[User:Shayvidas|Shayvidas]], an edit you described as "less promotional", you ''added'':

::Shay also manages a Facebook group with over 15,000 members, which has become a vibrant community for watch enthusiasts. Members actively discuss their shared passion for horology, share updates about the brand, and connect with others who appreciate handmade, unique designs. This platform has been instrumental in growing the VIDAS brand and fostering strong connections with collectors worldwide.
:And there still were no references. So I have no reason to think that the draft, were it resuscitated, would lead to an article. -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] ([[User talk:Hoary|talk]]) 03:04, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

== How to post on an article's Talk page that you have COI ==
I was attempting to disambiguate links to [[Flag of Amazonas]], but in the two pages that have the DAB links, I cannot work out how the link is made. The pages are: [[Amazonas Province (Brazil)]] and [[Amazonas (Venezuelan state)]]. In both cases, the link is in the caption ("Flag") for the flag image in the infobox. Is the link coming from metadata in the flag images used somehow? Or in the infobox template? Or something completely different? Any advice appreciated. :As far as I'm concerned as the OP (proudly trying out a new acronym I've just learned) of this topic and thread, I think we can let it go on to the archives. First, though, I wanted to share which way I've chosen from the trayful of options all of you offered toward my decision-making. I was just uncomfortable with the idea of slapping one of those impersonal COI templates onto the article's Talk page without at least a little explanation of why I have COI. Yet picking up on Hoary's suggestion of adding a section to the Talk page that merely declared I had COI, not adding any explanation of why, didn't feel quite like "me" either.
:When I discussed this further with my mentor, he opened the door to my solution: that I could indeed give an explanation of my COI if I wanted to add it to a section at the article's Talk page. He just voiced caution to follow the [[K.I.S.S.]] principle.
:Now I feel ready to take on COI-dom as it comes. 🍧 Thank you, contributors to this thread and my decision. [[User:Augnablik|Augnablik]] ([[User talk:Augnablik|talk]]) 07:11, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
:[[User:Augnablik|Augnablik]], I believe that [[Template:Connected contributor]], mentioned above, is the best method. I always thought it was poorly named, and thus very hard to find. [[User:Mathglot|Mathglot]] ([[User talk:Mathglot|talk]]) 02:45, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
::@[[User:Mathglot|Mathglot]], honestly I doubt that you'd find anything of much value in hearing about my searching to find out about COI. The only thing perhaps a little unusual about my interest in COI would be that in addition to reading the COI policy, which I hadn't read for awhile when I asked the question that started this discussion, I've also been followig a large amount of discussions in the Teahouse and at the Help Desk and Village Pump about this topic, because the topic has been one of great interest and concern to me. And I did ask my mentor a few things about the topic as well. But I must say, there seems to be quite a bit of conflicting advice about whether or not editors should be editing articles if they have COI — even in the COI policy itself. Topic for another discussion, probably... Are you by any chance on a Wiki project to help improve user learning materials? I added two categories within a userbox regarding two web browsers [https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Template:User_Firefox_and_Waterfox&diff=prev&oldid=1248403337 in this edit here]. That resulted in [[:Category:Wikipedians who use Waterfox]] being placed in [[:Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls]]. But the other category added in the userbox [[:Category:Wikipedians who use Mozilla Firefox]] does not end up in the duplicate argument category. I can't figure it out. What did I do wrong? Why are not both affected? ::{{re|John of Reading}} I just spotted it incognito and wrote a draft that it had been fixed, then your reply popped up here in my logged in window after I clicked edit source ;) The issue didn't come from the userbox I thought it was, but one I edited a couple of hours earlier. But I didn't see that hidden category about duplicate arguments until after my edit on [[Template:User Firefox and Waterfox]], so I thought the issue came from my latest edit. Perhaps it took some hours before it was registered and showed up. Or I just didn't notice. I saw the duplicate arguments just now, and it all makes perfect sense. Also cool to learn that it is possible to wikilink to a diff. I'm sure there's an easy remedy, but I'm lost at the moment. The dimension in the infobox are wrong. The statue is 6-feet (1.8 m) tall and 2.5-feet (0.8 m) wide. The infobox says 6 cm × 2.5 cm (1.8 in × 0.8 in). I tried switching the parameters from [[:Template:Infobox artwork]] but it's still showing up in cm. I'm trying to translate an article about the company where I work from the Spanish Wikipedia to the English Wikipedia. However, I receive the following message: "On the English Wikipedia this tool is limited to extended confirmed editors, and the machine translation component is disabled for all users." I have a registered account that is over 4 days old and has more than 10 edits, but I'm still unable to use the translation tool. Could someone please assist me in understanding how to gain the necessary permissions or suggest alternative methods for translating and creating the article? Thanks you. [[User:Sabilla27|Sabilla27]] ([[User talk:Sabilla27|talk]]) 15:41, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
:Hi [[User:Sabilla27|Sabilla27]] as explained at [[WP:EXTENDED]] "A registered editor becomes extendedconfirmed automatically on edit after the account has existed for at least 30 days and has made at least 500 edits" although your account was created over 10 years ago, you only have 42 edits, far short of the 500 required.<br>As for alternate methods, firstly, I suggest you check your company meets the English Wikipedia requirements for companies, at [[WP:NCORP]] as these are more onerous than those on most other language Wikipedias. If you think your employer meets these then you need to make a [[Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure]] as you were advised in 2021.<br>I dislike most "auto-translate" methods, but you could copypaste into Word + translate that, correcting all the templates and references, and crediting the source as Spanish WP. - [[User:Arjayay|Arjayay]] ([[User talk:Arjayay|talk]]) 16:09, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
:Hello, Sabilla27. One of the reasons that the translation tool is often not useful for English Wikipedia, is that (as Arjayay said), English Wikipedia often has stricter requirements about notability and sourcing than other language versions. While I haven't looked at them closely (and my Spanish is limited), in my opinion the sources in [[:es:Metricool]] are nowhere near adequate for an article in English Wikipedia - and if the sources are inadequate, any article will be inadequate, and therefore any translation of the Spanish article in its present form will be unacceptable.
:Most of the sources (and all the sources that are to be used to establish that the subject meets Wikipedia's criteria on [[WP:NCORP|notability]]) must meet all three of the conditions of being reliable, independent, and having significant coverage of the subject (see [[WP:42]] for more detail). Only two of the references there (nos. 2 and 7) even ''might'' be acceptable - the rest are either not independent of Metricool, or are blogs.
:Note that {{HD/WINI}}
:Also, the article has [[WP:external links|external links]], which are hardly ever allowed inside the text in English Wikipedia, except in citations.
:I recommend you treat this as creating a new article - which is difficult for an inexperienced user, and much more difficult for a user with a [[WP:conflict of interest|conflict of interest]] such as yourself.
:In summary:
:*'''first of all''' , please read about [[WP:paid editing|paid editing]], and make the '''mandatory''' formal declaration of your status as a paid editor.
:* Then please read [[WP:translation|translation]] and [[WP:your first article|your first article]], and start a completely new draft by finding the sources you need. (They don't have to be in English, or online, but they have to be reliable, totally independent of Metricool, and having significant coverage of the company).

:Hello, IP user. It's great that you want to make sure Wikipedia is up to date, but no, it is not a major emergency, and we do not need to "join together and stop this". Also, much as we would sometimes like it to be about truth, Wikipedia is about [[WP:TRUTH|verifiability, not truth]].
:Not currently with how the page is currently formatted, there was a proposal a few years ago to split out the United States venues into their own page - see {{section link|Talk:List_of_music_venues|United_States}} -- if that was accomplished (which is probably a good idea) it would be trivial to make that link work. Please help me! My draft which i prepared about a famous social media influencer has been declined by wikipedia for submission.i have correctly cited and did not do any copy paste. Please do the needful.
Dear Wikipedia administrators,

DRAFT: Nischay Malhan. Ragards Surfmaster... [[User:Surfmaster23|Surfmaster23]] ([[User talk:Surfmaster23|talk]]) 17:23, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
I am writing to request that the article on the [[Pawn (programming language)]], i was made a draft [[User:Putu Suhartawan/sandbox/Pawn (programming language)|in my sanbox]] be reconsidered move soon for a featured article nomination. I believe that this topic is worthy of a more in-depth exploration, particularly given its significant role in game development for embedded systems. The history of Pawn and the reasons behind its popularity among developers would make for a fascinating and informative read.

:Please see the comment left on the draft [[Draft:Nischay Malhan]], which says that the cited sources do not contain [[WP:significant coverage|significant coverage]] of Malhan. Without several sources that meet ''all three'' of the criteria in [[WP:42]], you cannot establish that the subject meets Wikipedia's criteria for [[WP:notability|notability]]. ::Per [[User:Cremastra|Cremastra]], I don't quite get what you are trying to explain here [[User:Putu Suhartawan|Putu Suhartawan]]. I also don't understand why you specifically pinged me for this, as I am not an admin.
::Just because this topic is widely used for game developments ''doesn't mean'' it should immediately be a [[WP:FA|featured article]]. :Administrators have no more power over featured article nominations than any other editor.
:It is unclear what you are trying to do here, because there are many things that are confusing or wrong about your comment
:# [[Pawn (programming language)]] does not exist (and [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pawn (scripting language)|was deleted]]); you linked to a draft in your userspace.
:# [[WP:FA|Featured articles]] are the ''very best'' of Wikipedia articles and they pass through rigorous review processes. Your userspace draft would not be considered because it is a draft. You would have to move it to mainspace, but frankly it is definitely not featured article quality.
:# You say you want the draft to be "reconsidered" which implies you nominated it for featured article status in the past and it failed. This, as far as I can tell, is not the case.
:So, @[[User:Putu Suhartawan|Putu Suhartawan]] can you explain what you want to happen here? [[User:Cremastra|Cremastra]] ([[User talk:Cremastra|talk]]) 23:14, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
::Thank you for your response, Mr. @[[User:Cremastra|Cremastra]]. I understand that the current article does not meet featured article standards. However, I plan to improve and expand the article to meet the required criteria.
::I intend to move the Pawn (programming language) draft to the mainspace and will strive to improve its quality. I would also like to highlight that on the page [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pawn (scripting language)|Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pawn (scripting language]]), there was a fairly supportive discussion about the topic's eligibility for a main article.
::I hope to gain support from the Wikipedia community to develop this article into a comprehensive source of information on the Pawn programming language.
::Reasons to Maintain the Pawn Programming Language Article on Wikipedia
::1. Historical Significance and Community:
::Origin and Development: Pawn has a notable history, having been developed by ITB CompuPhase and gaining popularity among game developers. Its open-source nature has fostered a dedicated community.
::Legacy and Impact: Pawn has been used in various game development projects, particularly for embedded systems. Its influence and contributions to the programming landscape make it worthy of documentation.
::2. Educational Value and Learning Resource:
::Beginner-Friendly: Pawn's syntax and structure are relatively straightforward, making it suitable for those learning programming. Its availability as a free and open-source language provides a valuable learning resource.
::Game Development Applications: Pawn's use in game development offers a practical context for learning programming concepts and applying them to real-world projects.
::3. Technical Relevance and Current Use:
::Active Development: While Pawn may not be as widely used as some modern languages, it continues to be developed and maintained.
::Embedded Systems: Its relevance in embedded systems programming ensures its continued use in specific domains.
::Community and Projects: The existence of an active community and ongoing projects demonstrate its ongoing relevance.
::4. Comparison and Context:
::Relationship to Other Languages: Comparing Pawn to other languages, especially [[C++|C]], can provide valuable insights into its unique features and benefits.
::Historical Context: Understanding Pawn's place in the evolution of programming languages can offer a broader perspective on its significance.
::5. Potential for Future Development:
::New Applications: Pawn might find new applications or be adapted for emerging technologies.

::In conclusion, while Pawn may not be a mainstream language today, its historical significance, educational value, technical relevance, and potential for future development justify its inclusion on Wikipedia. The article can serve as a valuable resource for those interested in learning about programming languages, game development, or the history of technology. :::I encourage you to improve the article and work towards [[WP:FA]] status. A good short-term goal would be, once the article has been moved to mainspace and you are sure it is notable, try nominating it for [[WP:DYK]].

::::As it stands the draft is not even ready for article space, let alone for featured article status. For starters there is only one ref (it's used twice but they are both the same ref), a simple description of the language from the developer. There is nothing independent to show the notability of the language. [[User:Meters|Meters]] ([[User talk:Meters|talk]]) 01:25, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
:::::Dear Wikipedia administrators,
:::::Thank you for your valuable feedback and encouragement. I understand that the current draft of the Pawn (programming language) article does not yet meet the standards for a featured article. I am committed to improving the article and working towards achieving WP:FA status.

:::::I would like to clarify that I will avoid assuming anyone's gender unless it is explicitly stated. I will address individuals by their preferred pronouns or by their username.
:::::Regarding the article's content, I acknowledge that there is currently only one reference and it needs to be expanded. I will strive to include more independent sources to demonstrate the language's notability.

:Putu Suhartawan, please understand that the list of qualities you give above, apparently as a justification for arguing that Wikipedia should have an article on Pawn, is completely irrelevant to that question. English Wikipedia accepts articles only if they meet its criteria for [[WP:notability|notability]], and in most cases, that means that there has been enough [[WP:42|indepedent, reliable material published ''about'' the subject]] to base an article on. The qualities you list may make it likely that somebody independent has written about it, but you need to cite those actual publications; and then you need to base the article nearly 100% on what those sources say, not what you know or want to say. :@[[User:Putu Suhartawan|Putu Suhartawan]], each Wikipedia has its own rules and policies. There is one Wikipedia for each language (or at least lots of different Wikipedias for different languages), and English Wikipedia is generally considered to be the strictest in regards to sourcing and content. Can any of you guys clarify on what the following means?

Gday fellow pedians!
===Disable images in search widget for certain skins===
Search result images can be turned off by altering the respective common.css for the skin being used and adding a rule to not display background images for spans of the class <code>.wvui-typeahead-suggestion__thumbnail</code>. For example:
<syntaxhighlight lang="css">span.wvui-typeahead-suggestion__thumbnail {
background-image:none !important;
}</syntaxhighlight> [[Special:Contributions/2601:8C:401:6020:FC17:186C:4AF4:5263|2601:8C:401:6020:FC17:186C:4AF4:5263]] ([[User talk:2601:8C:401:6020:FC17:186C:4AF4:5263|talk]]) 22:14, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
:It only applies to logged in users who can save the code at [[Special:MyPage/common.css]], but I don't know whether there are currently circumstances where it works. This works for me in the default desktop skin Vector 2022:
<syntaxhighlight lang="css">.cdx-typeahead-search__menu .cdx-thumbnail__image {

== Uploading picture ==
Hello,

Hello,
I created a page for Seattle city council member [[Tom Weeks]] but a red link for an Olympic sailor was connected to it. I'm still relatively new at Wiki, and I would like to learn how to solve this problem and avoid this in the future.

I would like to ask a question about uploading a picture. Few days ago, one of my pictures I uploaded was deleted from Wikipedia. It was said, due to copyright issues. So I asked the original owner of the pictures, and he granted me permission to use it. How can I reupload a picture without they remove it again? [[User:Kgbalint|Kgbalint]] ([[User talk:Kgbalint|talk]]) 09:54, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, [[User:Bpuddin|Bpuddin]] ([[User talk:Bpuddin|talk]]) 00:25, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
:{{re|Kgbalint}} You cannot upload it at all, unless the copyright owner licenses it under a [[CC-BY-SA]] license that allows anyone uses it for any purpose. The copyright owner is generally the original photographer. The simplest way to do that is for the owner to put that license on the picture on some web site under the owner's control. Another method is for the owner (not you) to upload the picture to Wikipedia Commons and license it there. -[[User:Arch dude|Arch dude]] ([[User talk:Arch dude|talk]]) 11:11, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
::Various other open licences are also acceptable; CC-BY-SA is acceptable but not required. <span class="vcard"><span class="fn">[[User:Pigsonthewing|Andy Mabbett]]</span> (<span class="nickname">Pigsonthewing</span>); [[User talk:Pigsonthewing|Talk to Andy]]; [[Special:Contributions/Pigsonthewing|Andy's edits]]</span> 15:38, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

:Hello, @[[User:Kgbalint|Kgbalint]]. Wikipedia (and other Wikimedia sites, such as Commons) are much more careful about copyright than many sites on the internet. Also, part of the purpose of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites is to provide a stock of freely-reusable information.
:This means that it is not enough for the copyright holder to "grant permission" for their pictures to be used in Wikipedia: the copyright owner must explicitly release the images in a way that anybody may reuse or alter them for any purpose. The usual way to do this is to release the images under a permissive licence such as [[WP:CC-BY-SA]]. Only the copyright owner has the legal power to do this - not the subject of the picture (unless they are also the copyright owner), nor anybody else. [[WP:donating copyright materials|donating copyright materials]] tells them what they need to do.
:See [[WP:image use policy|image use policy]] for more information. [[User:ColinFine|ColinFine]] ([[User talk:ColinFine|talk]]) 11:12, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
:@[[User:Kgbalint|Kgbalint]] Is this about the logo for [[Draft:AEON GODS]] or something else? [[User:Gråbergs Gråa Sång|Gråbergs Gråa Sång]] ([[User talk:Gråbergs Gråa Sång|talk]]) 12:18, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

For one thing, it uses {{tl|cite web}} templates, which I've basically never used; I never use these templates. :Most logos on Wikipedia are uploaded directly to the site, instead of being on Commons. Alternatively, you could ask the editor who added the citation if they have a copy of it. As there are multiple citations to Freivogel in the article but no #12 that does, I can't determine which part of the article text you are referring to; however, one editor who cited the Freivogel article was {{u|Peacemaker67}} on October 2, 2023 ([[Special:Diff/1178213471|here]]); {{they|Peacemaker67}} also added the citation to the Bibliography a [[Special:Diff/1177755328|few days earlier]]. : P.S. come to think of it, the cyberattack is probably limiting their library list function, so maybe lots of other libraries have it, too, and their website will show you the library closest to you that has it when the website is fully functional; maybe try again in a day or two. Good day,
I was on the article [[Radius of outermost closed isobar]] and I found that reference number 4 leads to an ftp:// address, which I believe is the address of an [[FTP server]]. I'm unable to view it in my browser, and I assume the server is down? I'm also almost certain it's a primary source so I may remove it later on if nobody else can verify it. Are citations to FTP servers allowed at all? [[User:GeorgeMemulous|GeorgeMemulous]] ([[User talk:GeorgeMemulous|talk]]) 17:39, 30 September 2024 (UTC)

I am an editor, and would like to ask what application (website) most editors use to create the parliamentary seat charts on most articles? (Ref: [[List of members of the 6th National Assembly of Namibia]]).
:You can view and download it [https://app.box.com/s/go17wcuwcf6sohwe25rz7499sjdiaqs7 here] on the web. I downloaded it with [[FileZilla]], which has much better FTP capabilities than a web browser.--'''''[[User:ianmacm|<span style="background:#88b;color:#cff;font-variant:small-caps">♦Ian<span style="background:#99c">Ma<span style="background:#aad">c</span></span>M♦</span>]] [[User_talk:ianmacm|(talk to me)]]''''' 18:25, 30 September 2024 (UTC)

== How can school records be saved ==

Re: Paul Martin (illustrator). He attended an art school in the early 1900s. It's stated in the article and backed up with a reference from the ''New York Times.'' But the article also states the years he attended and his instructors. That can only be backed up with the old record cards (similar to 3x5 cards) on file. I received a scan of them, but I don't think the picture can be downloaded to Commons due to copyright issues. Do they still apply to something dated to 1906? That date is on the card. Can the picture be downloaded to Wayback instead and reachable via a reference in the WP article? Can the picture just be downsized? Thanks. Kudos for this fabulous new feature! ...except for one problem, and surely I'm not the only editor bothered by this: Previews appear far too quickly, almost instantly. Frankly the incessant little pop-ups can become a nuisance, especially when I'm hunting through edit histories; they block my view like a giant trailing mouse-pointer that I can't turn off. It would be very helpful for there to be a brief delay, maybe 2 seconds of mouse hover, before the preview feature is engaged. — [[User:HelpMyUnbelief|HelpMyUnbelief]] ([[User talk:HelpMyUnbelief|talk]]) 21:59, 30 September 2024 (UTC)

::::But an image offers more proof. There is already a citation in place. Maybe I can just upload to Wayback two of the three "record cards." (I would just have to crop out the third card from the image.) They date to 1902 and 1903. Out of copyright? The most important detail is on those two cards, anyway. == Harmful user ==
I recently uploaded a file to Wikipedia and I got a notification saying that the image had no copyright information and I needed to add it, but I can't find how to add the copyright information.

I know the copyright license and it is considered free to use.
I've warned user:Sinclairian about the biased, inaccurate, and harmful edits they've been doing. These are on very niche topics that nobody's ever, ever going to notice. Like who's gonna actually check the source translation on the [[Arslan Tash amulets]]? Well, I did because the translation is so scrabblingly amateurish, (Also because I always look lately when I see that username on one of my watched articles) and the user's rendering of it actually had some "improvements" that might make the scholar look better or worse. The reader would think the translation has been accurately copied and pasted when that's not the case. The other translation's even worse by some scholar I don't know. Someone legitimate, I'm sure, but not good. I think questionable artifacts should be categorized as such and noted in the first paragraph, and translastions of questioned items and forgeries shouldn't be included for obvious reasons. Anyway, I think the user should be banned. Inaccurcies on minor Semitic languages that a dozen people know will stick around forever; the quietness of it means the ripples on public knowledge will spread with no end. Very subtly destructive stuff. (Sorry if this is the wrong place, it's my first time reporting a user.)

:You did a good job removing a lot of the fluff, although the article does need a lot of work to improve it overall, but definitely it has been improved. I did warn the other editor of [[WP:OWN]], however I would also encourage you to take some of these items to the article talk page and/or the user page and form a discussion instead of simply placing warnings over your concerns. Comment from Shayvidas

    Hi,

I recently created a draft titled "Draft:Shay Albert Vidas," but it was deleted under G11 for being promotional. I understand the concerns and would like to request that the draft be restored to my user page so I can revise it further.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could assist me in restoring the draft to my user page or guide me on how to proceed.

Thank you for your time and help!

Best regards, Shayvidas Shayvidas (talk) 00:02, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Moved comment from talk page here. Myrealnamm (💬Let's talk · 📜My work) 00:50, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In your second and so far final edit to this, Shayvidas, an edit you described as "less promotional", you added:
Shay also manages a Facebook group with over 15,000 members, which has become a vibrant community for watch enthusiasts. Members actively discuss their shared passion for horology, share updates about the brand, and connect with others who appreciate handmade, unique designs. This platform has been instrumental in growing the VIDAS brand and fostering strong connections with collectors worldwide.
And there still were no references. So I have no reason to think that the draft, were it resuscitated, would lead to an article. -- Hoary (talk) 03:04, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Shayvidas: I should also add that writing about yourself, if you are indeed the subject, is strongly discouraged as it is virtually impossible to write neutrally about oneself. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:29, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would also suggest you take a moment to read the essay WP:PROUD, as you might not really want an article about yourself, as much as it might sound like a good idea right now. TiggerJay(talk) 05:02, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to post on an article's Talk page that you have COI

I need to post on an article's Talk page that I have COI with the subject. Could you give me an idea of what to write, maybe a sort of template to use, as I've never done this before. Augnablik (talk) 03:55, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps == Conflict of interest == [line break] I have a conflict of interest with [what it is that you have a COI with]. ~~~~ -- Hoary (talk) 05:23, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We don’t need to explain what the COI is, or anything further? Somehow I was thinking that would be important, not just a brief admission of COI. Augnablik (talk) 06:02, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Please see WP:COI. -- Hoary (talk) 06:38, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mmm, yes ... thank you, @Hoary, I'd read the COI information some time ago but forgotten there was something about how we could declare it with a particular article. I'm thinking carefully which of the three options I'd like to use when I start in on that article.
It seems to me that the option letting me put a COI userbox about this article on my User page sort of hides my COI from view, and wouldn't be as transparent as the other two options. I'm sort of surprised we can do this, as also that we apparently needn't elaborate on the connection we have with the subject of the article. Augnablik (talk) 09:12, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Augnablik You could use the template at Talk:Elayne Harrington, Template:Connected contributor. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:45, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Which is one of the three options mentioned at the COI guidance page. You certainly found an interesting example, that folk singer herself being a Wiki editor! Augnablik (talk) 09:14, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, per definition, to "template" someone like this, they kinda have to be a WP-editor. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:17, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But not necessarily a celebrity who’s the subject of a Wiki article. 🙂 Augnablik (talk) 10:30, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I'm concerned as the OP (proudly trying out a new acronym I've just learned) of this topic and thread, I think we can let it go on to the archives.
When I discussed this further with my mentor, he opened the door to my solution: that I could indeed give an explanation of my COI if I wanted to add it to a section at the article's Talk page. He just voiced caution to follow the K.I.S.S. principle.
Now I feel ready to take on COI-dom as it comes. 🍧 Thank you, contributors to this thread and my decision. Augnablik (talk) 07:11, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Augnablik, I believe that Template:Connected contributor, mentioned above, is the best method. I always thought it was poorly named, and thus very hard to find. If you can tell me some of the searches you performed, maybe we can add some redirects to get people to the right place faster. Mathglot (talk) 02:45, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mathglot, honestly I doubt that you'd find anything of much value in hearing about my searching to find out about COI. Augnablik (talk) 06:55, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Augnablik, not formally, but I do work a fair bit in that area as the occasion arises. You might be interested to hear about the Wikipedia Education program; they act as a liaison between Wikipedia and formal classes in U.S. & Canadian universities whose students edit Wikipedia as part of their coursework. Wiki Ed has developed student training materials for students in these classes, administrates the program, and deals with student questions. If you want to find out more about their training materials, a good place to start would be at the Wikipedia:Education noticeboard. Mathglot (talk) 08:43, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I heard of that. And as an instructional designer, trainer, and teacher I’ve been thinking about following up on it … after dealing with my COI issues and related editing. Augnablik (talk) 08:56, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I tried switching the parameters from Template:Infobox artwork but it's still showing up in cm. APK hi :-) (talk) 04:47, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed... What you were missing was metric_unit and imperial_unit, by default it uses cm and inches respectively. Simply setting those to meters and feet resolved the problem. TiggerJay(talk) 04:59, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Awesome, thank you. APK hi :-) (talk) 05:05, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    How to make this link?

On this page Norway women's national handball team in the info box on the right side, under Results, then under World Championship in the Appearances section it says '22 (First in 1971)'. Once you click on 1971, the link correctly takes you to the Women's World Cup that year.

However, on this page Slovenia women's national handball team in the same section where it says '8 (First in 1997)' if you click on 1997, the link incorrectly takes you to the Men's World Cup that year.

If you go to 'edit source', you will see that details are not provided there, it just says 1971 in the first instance and 1997 in the second, without any links. How can the problem on the second page be solved, so that the link is for the Women's World Cup in 1997?

    Thanks. NoWikiNoLife (talk) 12:58, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @NoWikiNoLife. The difference is that in the Slovenia article the parameter is Type with a capital T, while in the Norway case it is type with a small one.
If you look at Template:Infobox national netball team, most of the parameters start with a capital letter, except name, type, update, and the parameters relating to kit. Also, this is wrong in the "Usage" section of the template doc.
I've corrected this in the article, but the template documentation needs correcting. I suggest posting on the Template talk page. ColinFine (talk) 13:55, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    this link:

List of New Jersey music venues by capacity (1,000 attendees or greater)

    ....

is there a way to make it point directly to nj? Bhdshoes2 (talk) 15:22, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bhdshoes2 It looks as though the target page will need an anchor, which it may once have had that was deleted. That list is so long and complicated with all its tables, I'm not going to try to fix it but you might like to try! Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:33, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not currently with how the page is currently formatted, there was a proposal a few years ago to split out the United States venues into their own page - see Talk:List of music venues § United States -- if that was accomplished (which is probably a good idea) it would be trivial to make that link work. TiggerJay(talk) 15:36, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) An anchor should fix this... but it also looks like Mike is working on this for you. Although I would still think it might not be a bad idea to break out the US venues into their own list. TiggerJay(talk) 15:41, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not me but maybe someone else is looking at it. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:07, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Paragraph break problem at Gabe Newell

I'm trying to add a paragraph break after the following sentece: Newell opted to found Valve instead of retiring as he felt working with "other really smart, motivated, socially-orientated people to create product that would affect millions of other people" was "the most fun I could have". For some reason, it won't appear. What am I doing wrong? Popcornfud (talk) 15:32, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Popcornfud I fixed it by placing a linebreak after the "Main" template. Don't ask me why that works! Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:38, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! It looks like having the Main template as part of the paragraph was causing the problem, for whatever reason. Popcornfud (talk) 16:13, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Guidance on main article-"subarticle" relations

    Hello,

Can someone point me towards guidance on how best to summarize content on main pages that is expanded on in other pages, and how to link between the two, etc.? I checked through the guidelines navbox but nothing jumped out at me. For context, I am trying to coordinate Greater Richmond Region and its constituent localities, especially Richmond, Virginia. However, I don't want to put the information solely in the "correct location" at the expense of our readers.

How do I fixed a usurped official website URL being picked up from Wikidata?

    Gday fellow pedians!

I noticed the official website URL at the end of the article It (2017 film), listed in the external links with "official website" tagging, has been usurped by some commercial store. It's being picked up from wikidataitem d:Q25136484. I've changed the official website status there to usurped and put an end date against the statement, also added an archive URL from Wayback. However, Wikipedia still picks up and shows the usurped URL from the official website statement. Is there a way to fix this? What am I doing wrong? Thank you! 45154james (talk) 08:43, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure how the Wikidata interaction works, but I've removed the link from the external link section. The documentation at Template:Official website states that a dead link has to be handled through Template:Webarchive. CMD (talk) 09:01, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    That's great thanks so much. I've now restored it with the Template:Webarchive, which I didn't know about. 45154james (talk) 09:27, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Uploading picture

    Hello,

I would like to ask a question about uploading a picture. Few days ago, one of my pictures I uploaded was deleted from Wikipedia. It was said, due to copyright issues. So I asked the original owner of the pictures, and he granted me permission to use it. How can I reupload a picture without they remove it again? Kgbalint (talk) 09:54, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kgbalint: You cannot upload it at all, unless the copyright owner licenses it under a CC-BY-SA license that allows anyone uses it for any purpose. The copyright owner is generally the original photographer. The simplest way to do that is for the owner to put that license on the picture on some web site under the owner's control. Another method is for the owner (not you) to upload the picture to Wikipedia Commons and license it there. -Arch dude (talk) 11:11, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Various other open licences are also acceptable; CC-BY-SA is acceptable but not required. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:38, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If this was about a logo for an article in mainspace, we could do non-free, but that doesn't seem to be the case atm. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:01, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Kgbalint. Wikipedia (and other Wikimedia sites, such as Commons) are much more careful about copyright than many sites on the internet. Also, part of the purpose of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites is to provide a stock of freely-reusable information.
This means that it is not enough for the copyright holder to "grant permission" for their pictures to be used in Wikipedia: the copyright owner must explicitly release the images in a way that anybody may reuse or alter them for any purpose. The usual way to do this is to release the images under a permissive licence such as WP:CC-BY-SA. Only the copyright owner has the legal power to do this - not the subject of the picture (unless they are also the copyright owner), nor anybody else. donating copyright materials tells them what they need to do.
See image use policy for more information. ColinFine (talk) 11:12, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kgbalint Is this about the logo for Draft:AEON GODS or something else? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:18, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, for this File:AEON-GODS-King-of-Gods-Cover.webp to remain on Commons, you should direct the copyright holder (I'm guessing the artist, but I don't know that) to COM:VRT/CONSENT. You have marked it as "This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.", but there is no indication of that at the source-website. I'm actually doubtful the copyright holder would be ok with that, but it's possible. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:30, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kgbalint you appear to have again uploaded an album cover which does not have an explicit PD or CC BY-SA 4.0 Licence. To be able to use the album cover at all, you will need Fair Use, see File:Dark Side of the Moon.png Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:15, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominate it for WP:TFD. As it's now in main space, the CSD categories for author deletion no longer apply. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:06, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:V does not require that the source be available on line. You could ask at WP:RD/H as suggested. TSventon (talk) 15:14, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@P. ĐĂNG: WP:RX would be a better venue than those suggested above; or you could try your local library. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:34, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    P. ĐĂNG, assuming that this WorldCat link is the book you are looking for, according to WorldCat, there is only one library in the world that has a copy of it: the British Library, St. Pancras, London. Their website is currently down or limited due to a cyberattack (Contact page), but you could try calling or emailing them at customer@bl.uk and if you are lucky, they will pull the book for you and look up the information and get back to you, if it is just a matter of verifying an assertion in the article. Alternatively, you could ask the editor who added the citation if they have a copy of it. As there are multiple citations to Freivogel in the article but no #12 that does, I can't determine which part of the article text you are referring to; however, one editor who cited the Freivogel article was Peacemaker67 on October 2, 2023 (here); he also added the citation to the Bibliography a few days earlier. You could ask him if he has a copy of the book, or can get one.
P.S. come to think of it, the cyberattack is probably limiting their library list function, so maybe lots of other libraries have it, too, and their website will show you the library closest to you that has it when the website is fully functional; maybe try again in a day or two. Mathglot (talk) 00:22, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some Wikipedia pages are not indexed by search engines

    Hello!

I noticed that some Wikipedia pages are not indexed by search engines. For example Nova TV (Ireland) and List of NCAA Division I women's soccer season goals leaders

How can this be fixed? Sanidelle (talk) 15:43, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You don't need the whole url when linking. These articles may need to be reviewed by a New Pages Patroller. 331dot (talk) 15:47, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sanidelle Nova TV has a meta "noindex, nofollow" instruction to search engines (Html line 29) because it hasn't been patrolled; the women's soccer article does not have this, and is already indexed and findable on Google search, as expected. Mathglot (talk) 23:31, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing that needs to be fixed -- they first have to be patrolled and then indexed by Google, they both take time, but nothing overtly looks like it needs correcting. TiggerJay(talk) 03:51, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Parliamentary Seat Distribution Chart

    Good day,

I am an editor, and would like to ask what application (website) most editors use to create the parliamentary seat charts on most articles? (Ref: List of members of the 6th National Assembly of Namibia).

    Regards GMilø19 (talk) 17:45, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The upload comment for that image says "Direct upload from the ParliamentDiagram tool". As far as I can tell, that is at https://parliamentdiagram.toolforge.org/archinputform ColinFine (talk) 19:08, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What does the "Ask your mentor a question" button look like (in desktop vs mobile web vs app)

Multiple times, I've had mentees ask me duplicates of the same question, or their actual question followed by another "question" that is a comment they meant to append to the first one. I suspect the form they use to ask questions is misleading/does not properly inform them, leading to these mistakes. Anyone have a screenshot? Mach61 18:08, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mach61, I'm not good at screenshots. The button is on a user's "Homepage" tab in a box partway down on the right that introduced the mentor. It is a rectangle that says "Ask your mentor a question about editing". In the mobile view only part of the mentor section is available but there is a "?" on the mentor icon. Clicking that brings up the rectangle that serves as the button. You can enable your own newcomer Homepage and see what newcomers see by going to the very bottom of the "User Profile" tab in "Preferences". Hope this helps. How can school records be saved

Re: Paul Martin (illustrator). He attended an art school in the early 1900s. It's stated in the article and backed up with a reference from the New York Times. But the article also states the years he attended and his instructors. Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 11:45, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The article Paul Martin (illustrator) already goes into mind-boggling detail and digressions: see note "n" in particular. Is it perhaps time to do some pruning of the article's content? -- Hoary (talk) 12:17, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Half of article's bytes are in references and hiddens and necessary to back up content. Note "n" is about a model twice pictured in the article (Foreign service cover, H-O poster). So you think that should be scaled back or mostly eliminated or hidden. JimPercy (talk) 14:07, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JimPercy, whence did you receive the scan? Offline materials that can be accessed at or requested from institutional archives can still be cited with {{cite archive}}. If received from someone's personal collection, the information cannot be cited at all, even if you upload it somewhere, due to the unverifiable paper trail. Folly Mox (talk) 13:50, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Scan received from Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. His school is also mentioned in the Infobox. JimPercy (talk) 14:10, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like the material you received can be cited without any image upload necessary. I don't understand c:Help:Public domain well enough to determine if your scan can be uploaded: there are some categories of 1906 U.S. media whose copyrights don't expire till 2026. Folly Mox (talk) 18:58, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But an image offers more proof. There is already a citation in place. Maybe I can just upload to Wayback two of the three "record cards." (I would just have to crop out the third card from the image.) They date to 1902 and 1903. Out of copyright? The most important detail is on those two cards, anyway. They both list the artist's name, address, birthdate, date of admission, and enrolled classes. JimPercy (talk) 19:40, 11 December 2024 (UTC) Update. It seems that template at Commons would work. The second card is dated Oct. 1903 (for school year '03-'04), so that predates 1904. JimPercy (talk) 20:44, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I'm not understanding why you feel the need to upload the file? As Folly stated, you can simply cite it -- unless someone is contesting this? I didn't see any mention or reverts on the article page itself. TiggerJay(talk) 03:49, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to nominate a website for blacklisting

Over the years, several IP editors have attempted to insert links to a certain commercial website. I think it is time to blacklist that website. Constant314 (talk) 13:36, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Another question

What does it mean if a language has a star icon next to it? User332224 (talk) 15:51, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@User332224: Assuming you're referring to in the list of languages on an article sidebar, the stars indicate that the article's equivalent on that language's Wikipedia is considered a featured article (if the star is gold) or good article (if silver) by that project. WP:CALC on a simple claim

Is it acceptable to state that the Little Rock tornado was the first to touch down in the March 31 tornado outbreak? This can be verified here on the storm events database, typically considered reliable, where it is the first entry chronologically (titled MARTINDALE, but entails Little Rock). Departure– (talk) 16:49, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking, I would say that if something was chronologically first, then that would be okay. At worst I would boldly add it to the article. But if it reverted or contested, take it to the talk page, as there might be other reasons beyond simple CALC that is involved. TiggerJay(talk) 00:13, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguating pages where visitors overwhelmingly go to a particular topic

Some time ago, I opened a RM to move Android to Android (disambiguation) and retarget to the operating system. There was a unanimous consensus against that. What I'm wondering about is where the line of when to disambiguate versus redirect lies. Visitors to Dime and English overwhelmingly go to the American coin and the language, respectively, but would I be correct in my reading of WP:1OTHER PRIMARY that a redirect would be justified in these cases?

    https://wikinav.toolforge.org/?language=en&title=English

    https://wikinav.toolforge.org/?language=en&title=Dime

    Thanks

    JayCubby 20:09, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is best to simply review both yours as well as prior RMs for those articles, as there were a lot of good points and references to policies and precedents mentioned. TiggerJay(talk) 00:11, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how WP:ONEOTHER applies – Dime and English each have several entries, not just two. jlwoodwa (talk) 07:17, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I recently uploaded a file to Wikipedia and I got a notification saying that the image had no copyright information and I needed to add it, but I can't find how to add the copyright information.

I know the copyright license and it is considered free to use.

    Thank you! ミラへぜ (talk) 21:28, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I will note that images are not relevant to the draft process, which only considers the text and sources. I would just remove the image for now until you are able to update the copyright information later. 331dot (talk) 21:33, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The image seems to be a professionally taken image, how did you obtain it? 331dot (talk) 21:34, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am not a photographer of any kind, this image was taken from a professional site that uses a public domain license for all of its images. ミラへぜ (talk) (ping me!) 23:21, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where did you get it, please? Be specific. DS (talk) 01:21, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For example, [1] has no indication this pic is free to use. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:49, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Have I successfully removed the promotional content from this article?

The owner of emailSanta.com made WP:COI and WP:YESPROMO edits at his own article yesterday. I tried to remove the "fluff" and restore the WP:NPOV. Has the WP:NPOV been restored, or is it still too promotional? Félix An (talk) 01:39, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You did a good job removing a lot of the fluff, although the article does need a lot of work to improve it overall, but definitely it has been improved. I did warn the other editor of WP:OWN, however I would also encourage you to take some of these items to the article talk page and/or the user page and form a discussion instead of simply placing warnings over your concerns. TiggerJay(talk) 02:15, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I have indefinitely pageblocked Kringle Claus from EmailSanta.com. Cullen328 (talk) 06:47, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
